The month of Mayis always part of the Easter season, the fifty days wecelebrate in the liturgy the Resurrection of Our Lord, atime also of awaiting the outpouring of the Holy Spirit atPentecost. The celebration of May as a Marian month fitswell with the liturgical celebrations of Easter and Pentecostas we recall Mary’s great joy in her Son’s victory over deathas well as her presence with the apostles in the upper roomprayerfully awaiting the descent of the Holy Spirit atPentecost. In this Year of Faith, it is good to consider the faith of Mary.At the Visitation, Elizabeth said to Mary: Blessed are youwho believed that what was spoken to you by the Lordwould be fulfilled. When we think of our Blessed Mother,we recognize that she is indeed blessed, not only becauseshe was the Mother of Jesus, but because she believed inthe Lord’s words. She believed with all her heart and said“yes” to become the Mother of the Messiah and Son of God.She allowed herself to be led by God’s grace throughout herlife, a life rooted in a deep faith in God. She became herSon’s first and most perfect disciple. CONTINUED

In our pilgrimage of faith, we walk always with Mary at our side. She is ourmodel of faith and she helps us with her prayers to live by faith. She teaches usto believe as she believed.During this month of May, we pay special honor to our Blessed Mother. In 1965,Pope Paul VI wrote a short encyclical on the month of May. He wrote that May isan occasion for a “moving tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every partof the world pay to the Queen of Heaven. During this month Christians, both inchurch and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts anespecially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the benefits of God’s mercy come down to us from her throne in greaterabundance.”I recommend the observance of May as a Marian month. Many churches andschools have celebrations of the crowning of images of Our Lady. This is abeautiful custom that expresses our love for the Mother of God as our Queen.Other Marian devotions are particularly fitting in the month of May. Of course, the holy rosary is always a wonderful prayer to enter more deeply into themysteries of Christ’s life with Mary. It is a Gospel prayer. All honor that we give to Mary is ordered to, and leads to, the adoration of God.Devotion to Mary fosters within us a faithful adherence to her Son. When wecrown images of Mary, we are honoring her. In honoring Mary, we are ultimatelypraising God for the grace He bestowed on her.We all probably have our favorite images of Mary as well as our favoritedevotions: Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes,Mother of Perpetual Help, the Miraculous Medal, etc. The many images anddevotions express various aspects of Our Lady’s vocation and mission. They helpus to know the virtues of Mary and remind us to turn to her for her intercession.I invite you to pray with Mary during this Marian month. Let us especiallycommend to her our prayers for life, marriage, and religious liberty. Let us allplace ourselves in the school of Mary to learn from her how to love God morefervently and to love one another as her Son has loved us.May the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for us and draw us closer to Christ herSon!

About 105 years ago, on this same day, May 13, 1917, in the small village ofFatima in Portugal, Lucia (9) and her cousins, Francisco (8) and his sister Jacinta(6) saw an apparition of “a woman all in white, more brilliant than the sun, indescribably beautiful, and who wore a white mantle edged with gold and held arosary in her hand.”On her 6th and last apparition to the children, on the 13th of October, 1917, shetold the children “I am the Lady of the Rosary.”During the October 13th apparition, 70,000 people witnessed “the sun make threecircles and move around the sky in an incredible zigzag movement in a mannerwhich left no doubt in their minds about the veracity of the apparitions” approved asauthentic by the Church by 1930.Our Lady asked the children “to pray, to devote themselves to the Holy Trinity andto say the Rosary every day, to bring peace to the world and an end of the war.”The first two of Our Lady’s prophetic ‘secrets’ were later revealed to refer to “thevision of hell and the souls languishing there, the request for an ardent devotion tothe Immaculate Heart of Mary, the prediction of the Second World War, and finallythe prediction of the immense damage that Russia would do to humanity byabandoning the Christian faith and embracing Communist totalitarianism.”In 2020, her third ‘secret’ was revealed and “referred to the persecutions thathumanity would undergo in the last century: The good will be martyred; the HolyFather will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated.”“The suffering of the popes of the 20th century has been interpreted to include theassassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in 1981, which took place on May 13,the 64th anniversary of the apparitions.”Continued

When our Lady appeared to the children, her 1917 messages mentioned herconcerns about “the violent trials that would afflict the world by means of war, starvation, and the persecution of the Church and the Holy Father in the twentiethcentury if the world did not make reparation for sins. She exhorted the Church topray and offer sacrifices to God in order that peace may come upon the world, and that the trials may be averted.”It is of utmost urgency to note that until now, war, starvation, persecution of theChurch and violent trials that Our Lady mentioned in 1917 are still present. The pandemic is this world’s present greatest trial and challenge. Wars are stillcontinuing in many countries and even in certain areas in our country. Hunger, poverty, joblessness are affecting millions and the end of continuing, simultaneouscrises still so remote and uncertain.Should the whole world be reminded now to hurry and heed Our Lady’s 1917exhortation “for the Church to pray and offer sacrifices to God in order that peacemay come upon the world and that the trials may be averted?”Did Pope Francis remember Our Lady’s messages when he made his recent callfor all in the world to pray the Rosary throughout the whole month of May?Last May 1, 2021, Pope Francis led the world in praying the Holy Rosary “for anend to the coronavirus pandemic, imploring the Virgin Mary to intercede forhealing for the sick, comfort for the grieving, and hope for the future.”With Pope Francis, together, and with penance, shall we and our families pray theRosary this May and seek refuge under Mary’s protection, in the midst of “thepresent dramatic situation, full of sufferings and anxieties that grip the wholeworld.”
