Thischurch season for many comes with thestress that accompanies our attempt tobalance the secular demands of theChristmas season with its true spiritualreality. As we prepare for the celebrationof the birth of the Christ Child, andJake Wernercontinue to prepare ourselves for Hiscoming at the end of time, it is of some importance that weunderstand how our individual call to service and our Order’s principles guide us to accomplish our good works. Godcalls each of us to successfully fulfill the role with which Hetasked us. The role may seem small to us, but it is part of God’sgreat plan to transform creation. Our Venerable founder, Father McGivney, provided for ourcontinual formation through the daily living of the principles offraternalism: charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. AsKnights, officers and leaders in our councils, districts and state,we are called to model the principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism in our everyday actions. It is these principlesthat are the basis of our good works and, more importantly, thevery foundation of the relationships we build with our families, friends, coworkers, brother knights and especially those withwhom we struggle for whatever reason. It is these sameCatholic principles that are attractive to, and sought by, otherCatholic men and families in our parishes. It is these same principles of faith that young men and families desire and seek. It isimportant for each of us to offer the opportunity of growth infaith; an opportunity to serve God and neighbor through ourcouncil programs to every Catholic man and family in ourparish.I encourage every Knight to offer the gift of membership to aCatholic man and his family. I encourage all to recruit a“Knight before Christmas.” Equally attractive to Catholic menand their families is our Order’s Building the Domestic ChurchProgram. Young men seek programs that call them to be partof something bigger than themselves. These programs are acritical part of our ability to attract, recruit, involve and retainmembers and families. These programs also provide Knightsand families a greater opportunity to participate in a variety ofactivities that promote the New Evangelization, strengthen ourparishes and grow the Order. One final note. Deb and I look forward to seeing many ofyou at the Mid-Year Meeting December 7-9 at the AmericInnin Medora. Almost half of the fraternal year is now behind usand while our start was slow, we have adjusted our game planand we are hitting our stride. The start of the year is history, itis how we finish the game that’s important. This final half, isour half and I am confident that we will attract, recruit, involveand retain Knights and families so that we can continue toserve for God’s Glory and Our Neighbors’ Good.Deb and I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas, and we pray that the peace and blessings of the Christ Childwill be with each of you and your families throughout theAdvent and Christmas Season and the New Year.Vivat Jesus!Jake Werner, State Deputy

TheUniform, yes, we have had many SirKnights purchase this, but you onlyneed it if you are going to standHonor Guards, yes we do encourageyou as that is when you get the mostout of being a Sir Knight. As the State Secretary for theNorth Dakota Knights ofColumbus my primary responsibilities are to record the minutes ofall the State Council meetings andto prepare and mail the semiannual Per Capita billings.Mike SteinerThe next Per Capita billing will bestmailed during the 1 week ofJanuary 2019. In thepast fraternal year our RSVP donations were down significantly fromthe prior year. In the 2017-2018 fraternal year we gave more than 54,000 to our seminarians and weare off to fairly slow start this year. Many councils wait until the spring to make theirRSVP donations but the seminarians have expensesthroughout the year. So consider giving your gift anytime during the year that you are able. You neverknow when your gift may be the answer to aseminarian’s prayer. From my family to yours, have a veryMerry Christmas and a blessed New Year!Michael KreitingerVivat Jesus! Please remember to report your RSVP donations toSupreme and to myself so we can track our state’snumbers.Michael KreitingerFaith Activities Co-Chair/RSVP Chairman3

Online Membership—A Program for Recruiting and Engaging New Members Does not eliminate councils. The goal of onlineThe link to apply for online membership will appear onhttp://nd-kofc.org/online membership.htmlmembership is to form men for committed, lifelongand council-based membership in the Knights ofColumbus. In fact, Online Membership creates apool of recruits for local councils to engage with. Does not eliminate dues. Online Members arerequired to pay 30 annual dues. Does not create a new class or type of member.Online Members are members of the Knights ofColumbus. They are non-degreed members, andthey do not belong to local councils, but they arenot provisional or partial members.Online Membership is:A web-based program through whicheligible Catholic men are able to jointhe Knights of Columbus online for 30 a year Not meant to replace traditionalrecruiting methods Not meant to change councils orShawn Tennysondegrees Meant to supplement traditional recruiting by offering a new, digital experience for certain men whoare not yet ready for council- based membership.MEMBERSHIP BENEFITSMembers who join online will receive the following: Welcome Package – All new members will receivea Welcome Package (contents include membershipcard, Columbia, welcome letter, and copy of Intothe Breach). Access to Online Membership Portal – All newmembers will receive full access to the OnlineMembership portal and all of its faith, values, insurance, and charitable content, as well asSupreme Council and State Council news andevents content. Membership Communications – Members willreceive weekly emails from the Supreme Councilon a variety of topics, including faith formation, public policy developments, charitable opportunities, financial planning, Order-wide news, andmembership events. Programs & Events – Members will be eligible toparticipate in or attend local, regional, and nationalcharitable and fraternal events. Columbia Magazine – Members will receive theprint edition of our monthly magazine, as well asany special fraternal publications producedthroughout the year. Insurance – Members, their spouses, and theirdependent children are eligible to purchase our lifeinsurance, long-term care insurance, disabilityincome insurance, and retirement products. Accidental Death Coverage – Eligible membersand their spouses will be automatically enrolled inthe Order’s accidental death coverage at no cost. Annual Financial Review – Members are entitledto an annual review by one of our field agents.WHY ONLINE MEMBERSHIP?Based on numerous listening sessions and surveys withboth members and non-members over the last fewyears, Supreme found a strong indication that theyshould develop a new, online way to recruit potentialmembers. This streamlined alternative helps acclimatemen to the Order. Once a man has joined online, wewill then work to incorporate him into a council andget him fully integrated with its activities.WHAT ONLINE MEMBERSHIP DOESThe initiative allows for: A Faster Way to Join – One of the most commonobjections to joining the Knights of Columbus is “Idon’t have time.” Through Online Membership, ajoin process that can take as many as two monthsnow takes five minutes. A Digital Experience –This initiative provides anew membership experience that is tailored toyounger men and busier men who may not yet beready for council-based membership. This low-pressure, low- commitment and digital experience meetsmen where they are, helps to form them asCatholic men, and enables us to bring moremen into the fold. An Amplified Message – The Online Membershipinitiative is backed by a substantial marketingcampaign that will find and work to convertprospective members.Shawn TennysonOnline Membership ChairmanWHAT ONLINE MEMBERSHIP DOES NOT DOThe Online Membership Initiative Does not change requirements for membership.Membership in the Knights of Columbus remainsopen to practical Catholic men. Does not eliminate degrees. Men who join onlineare non-degreed members. Once they are ready toconvert to a local council, they are required to takethe first degree.4

State Warden / State Program Directorreplaces 24 individual report forms, reducing the number of forms council officers are expected to use. Please submit one report form per program.Brother Knights,The Faith in Action model is a realization of the changing needs of menin the twenty-first century. It seeksto balance all of our key prioritieswith theirs — Faith, Family, Community and Life—and present themin a way that is clear to our leaders,Brian Dukartmembers and prospective Knights. The simplicity of Faith in Action is that it fully integrates Building the Domestic Church programs as afoundational part of the model, limits the number ofrequired programs to earn the Columbian award and, most importantly, allows councils to concentrate onimplementing quality faith-filled family programs. Thegoal is for men to lead their family in service—notleave their family for service. The focus of this streamlined program is quality, not quantity. The Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity (due January31st) has been updated to reflect the new Faith in Action program model! Please familiarize yourself withthe revised form as you continue to gather statistics onmeetings/donations/hours. The combined result of every council’s survey provides a powerful testament tothe level of charity that our Order, as a whole, providesto our parishes and communities. The Columbian Award Application is a requirement toearn the Star Council Award. As you continue to holdprograms throughout the fraternal year, please start toacclimate yourself with the new SP-7 form, which hasbeen updated to reflect the new Faith in Action program model. All of these and more forms can befound at kofc.org.The end of the year is upon us and we are halfwaythrough the Faith in Action programs for this fraternalyear. How have your councils participated in the newactivities and featured programs? Are you asking yourcouncil chaplains how you can implement the newprograms? Are you motivating your members to takean active part in the programs? These are all questionsthat we need to ask ourselves to build the domesticchurch. The main purposes of our new program are topray together as families and bring our families intothe order by including them in the good works that theKnights of Columbus are known for. Please utilize theFaith in Action Guidebook (#10590) that can be downloaded at kofc.org. The guidebook and other greatinformation on the website are excellent tools to understand what each activity is and what we are expected todo. Please continue to submit the monthly reporting form. When you are working on it, be sure to select the district your council is in. This will automatically send acopy of your report to your District Deputy. Also, please type a description for the event that you haveselected on the form. This is a helpful tool to see whatactivities each council is doing so that we can sharewith other councils in the state that are looking for newideas. Home on the Range is home to boys and girls, ages 12– 18. Many of the children who come to us have experienced or witnessed unimaginable things. They cometo us with many emotions and issues; lack of control, anger, guilt, emptiness, distrust, sadness, loneliness, aswell as physical trauma such as abuse or neglect.Home on the Range is a place that offers safety andcomfort. Our staff members offer guidance, supportand empathy. They recognize the hurt these childrenhave experienced and try to help them understand whatthey are feeling and how to effectively manage painfulemotions as they arise. We then hosted a baptism celebration in our HolyFamily Chapel with cake, punch and the love andsupport of all the staff. It fills our spiritual heart tosee someone so young so full of the Holy Spirit andwe give thanks and praise. This holiday season, we often look for small miraclesand enjoy stories with happy endings. We’d like toshare one such story with you.Last summer, a young lady came to us who had experienced devastating and traumatic issues. She had lostclose family members and didn’t know how to grievethose losses. Her coping skill then became using meth. When she came to us, she tried to make the staff andeveryone around her believe that she was fine, and shedidn’t need any help, especially from strangers andpeople who didn’t know her. On a home visit to herparents, she fell back into the old trap. She startedusing, ran away from home, had a drug overdose andended up in the emergency room. She says, “I hit rock bottom. I knew that somethingwas wrong with me and I needed help.”She returned to Home on the Range and finallybelieved staff were truly there to help her. She turnedto the spiritual department and developed a deeprelationship with Swenda and Peggy, our two “churchladies.” These two loving, compassionate womenintroduced her to God and His amazing grace. Shebecame very active in the spiritual department going toprayer groups, attending church, and participating inBible study. She learned about forgiveness, love, andhope.“I was baptized two weeks ago and I can truly say thatGod has completely changed my life and I know hecan change yours too. I will be discharged afterThanksgiving. I plan on going to college and gettinginvolved in an amazing church and spread God’s Wordand my story because we truly have an amazing Godand I believe you can do anything with Christ by yourside. This Thanksgiving and Christmas, we ask for yourcontinued prayers for all the children at Home on theRange. With your prayers and support, we know therewill be more small miracles and experiences thatpositively change the lives of our children.“God has showed me that my past doesn’t define me.As long as I have him by my side, I can do it. God isby my side no matter what. I turned my life over toGod. I can actually see my future without meth. I amable to be a good role model at Home on the Rangeand help spread God’s word. I am six months sober.”God has made a life-changing experience for thisyoung lady. It sh
