26TH SUNDAY IN ORIDINARY TIMESEPTEMBER 26, 2021THE LORD BE WITH YOU!Dear people of St. Mary’s,How does GOD guide us and teach us with His Sacred Scripture on this 26 th Sunday inOrdinary? In summary we are taught: Focus on GOD’s agenda, not on your own. Indeed this isthe clear link between the first reading from the Book of Numbers 11:25-29 and the Gospel today,Mark 9:39-48. When Joshua gets upset at the two men who are suddenly prophesying and wantsMoses to stop them, Moses asks “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the people wereprophets!” [Numbers 11:29]. JESUS responds to His disciple John, also upset that someone outsidetheir group was cas!ng out demons in JESUS’ name, that “whoever is not against us is for us” [Mark9:40].Both JESUS and Moses recognized that GOD’s spirit blows where it will; it some!mes ends upin the strangest places, working through o*en unexpected people. GOD doesn’t always “do thingsour way.” Being on the inside [in this group, society, family, neighborhood, school] is no guaranteethat we are “on track” with what is right and true in GOD’s eyes. Thus, we get JESUS’ hard wordsabout cu ng off a hand or a leg or plucking out an eye rather than le ng it cause us to sin and becast into hell. Many say this is hyperbole, Middle Eastern exaggera!on to make a point. But morelikely it is JESUS calling His disciples [then and today] to look honestly at their lives and facewhatever it is that leads them away from GOD. “Ðeal with it,” He says. We must always watch whatwe hold on to, the path we choose to walk, and the vision that guides us.Even those “on the inside” can lose sight of, lose touch with, and go off the path that takes usto the Kingdom. And those same souls can also take others with them. What ma"ers is that GOD’swork is being done. GOD will see to it; don’t get in the way of GOD’s way. Give GOD the glory—Heand none other—Give GOD the Glory, Spirit, Son, & Father—Glory to GOD on high!Let us pray: Almighty GOD, bless us with wisdom of Your ways. May our ways always besubmissive to Your ways and never lead or cause others who believe in You to sin.Fr. Peter Augustine, OSBST.
