Helping children problem solve through communicationOften the easiest response to complicated conversations is a generic one, but thesemoments can be opportunities to help children grow. For example, if a child comes to youand tells you that a friend is being left out of social activities, you might respond with a question: “Do you think there is anything you can do help him/her feel more included?” Or if yourchild comes to you for money for social activities, instead of offering a solution, you mightprompt them to consider ways that they could earn money or fundraise on their own. In thisway, you are not only helping a child find a solution to an immediate situation, but also helping them to grow in wisdom and prudence. For complete VIRTUS Article and more communication tips email: jvienna@la-archdiocese.orgCELEBRATING GRACE, GRATITUDE, AND GENEROSITY IN 2015Continued thanks to you, our generous parishioners and friends, for your supportof Holy Family Church, her ministries and community efforts. Thevocation denied them was given to their children, five of whombecame religious, one to the Visitation Order and four in theSacred Space:Adventis everywhere!CarmeliteConventof Lisieux.Brought up in an atmosphere offaith where every virtue and aspiration were carefully nurtured and developed, Thérèse’svocation manifested itself when she was still only a child. She was educated by theBenedictines. When she was fifteen she applied for permission to enter the CarmeliteConvent, and after being refused by thesuperior, went to Rome with her father toseek the consent of the Holy Father. Leo XIIIwas then celebrating his jubilee. He preferredto leave the decision in the hands of thesuperior, who finally consented. On April 9,1888, at the unusual age of fifteen, ThérèseMartin entered the convent of Lisieux wheretwo of her sisters had preceded her.She knew as a Carmelite nun she wouldnever be able to perform great deeds. " Loveproves itself by deeds, so how am I to showmy love? Great deeds are forbidden me. Theonly way I can prove my love is by scatteringflowers and these flowers are every little sacrifice, every glance and word, and the doingof the least actions for love." Our stainedglass window reflects this depicting manyflowers in her arms. Thérèse took everychance to sacrifice, no matter how small. Ather spiritual director’s request, she began tokeep a journal, which we have that describesher “little way”.Then in 1896, Thérèse became very ill. Shetried to remain smiling and cheerful, and succeeded. She died on September 30, 1897 atthe age of 24 years old. The account of theeleven years of her religious life, marked bysignal graces and growth in faith, was published. Its success was immediate. On May15, 1925 Thérèse was canonized by PopePius XI. She was declared a Doctor of theChurch in 1997 by Pope John Paul II.This is part of a yearlong series about our Sacred Space.
