Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary TimeSeptember 26, 2021Glimpse of My HeartBy: Fr. Thomas James, SVDThroughout the Scriptures, when different personalities are confronted with God’s Word, both heart and mindare stirred. We have examples of minds and hearts being stirred. The Truth does that; “In History and God’sWord, the Truth should be held Sacred, at whatever Cost!”Today in our liturgical worshipping service, we celebrate the 26th Sunday of Ordinary Time. In glancing overthe readings, the Alleluia verse caught my immediate attention,” Your word, O Lord is truth; consecrate us inthe truth”. This is striking and electrifying; striking because it is the foundational part of our life and electrifyingbecause it should add energy and light as we live each day hopefully with positive lived daily experiences. Allof us realize there are many people and issues that challenge and tug at us to live otherwise. My heart goes outto Eldad, Medad who were identified as ones who were names were on the list but were absent from the tent, yet the spirit came upon them, and the person identified by the Apostles in the gospel who was driving out demonsin your name, (Jesus’ name) and we tried to prevent him, Jesus replied, “Do not prevent him”!One of the great insights of the heart is this: we see things not as they are but as we are! What Joshua failed tosee was this, that the Lord might bestow his spirit on them! In the gospel Jesus informs the Twelve and elaboratesby saying no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who at the same time speak ill of me. Today’s gospelinforms us that whatever hinders us from the Kingdom eradicate from experiences and our life. If they do notenhance our life and the quality of our life they should be eradicated. FOR WHOEVER IS NOT AGAINSTUS IS FOR US!In our current living climate, our hearts affirm, the simple statement, we do not see things as they are but as weare. Secondly truth is the most important gift we have because it understands that reputation can enhance aperson’s person life or destroy, (the reputation could be true or not) but our integrity gives us the truth aboutself, (self –truth), this is the internal compass that lets us know whether we are in or out of truth. This is whatSolomon asked for and that is what we ask for in our lives today, more than ever before. Today when something is unjust and an unjust person sees it, but he thinks he is just, what he sees then is just. Another criticalexample today would be lying. If a person, who is a liar, knows something is true and that person is a pathologicalhabitual liar, he will say it is a lie. A classic example of this took place in our most recent presidential electionis still going on in our political area today.Truth is the gift Jesus promised the Apostles and shares with us. Truth is our challenge today in our own personallife, because when we live in truth we live in His Word, it is foundation of our life. Pilate asked Jesus what isTruth? There is no verbal answer from Jesus, his answer comes from both the example of his life and his proclamationto the Apostles; that he would be arrested, crucified and rise from the dead; that is his truth and in our religiousexperience, we experience, HIS WORD IS HIS BOND.Today, in reading St. John, then reflecting on Dr. King, Mother Theresa, Henriette de Lil, and our own life, this week let us pray, that we continue to strengthen our belief and realization that the truth sets us free internally, but externally we may be hemmed in, restricted, poor, and marginalized but possess an internal freedom thatone day we will share eternal, that is to know and encounter Our Heavenly Father! The people that Jesus meets in the New Testament, He stirs their Hearts and Mind! This week count when Hestirs your heart and when He stirs your mind! Identify them, they may be a challenge to each of us if we resolve, change this, invests in this, share this, then I do like King David, I want only kindness and goodness in my life.

Word Broken, Word SharedEditor: Hilarion Kistner, OFM, STD, SSL. Exegesis: G: Fr. Eugene Hensell, OSB, Fr. Hilarion Kistner, OFM, Fr. Timothy Schehr, SSLPublished by Franciscan Media, 28 W. Liberty Street, Cincinna!, Ohio 45202. www.franciscanmedia.org(The following exegesis is provided for the parishioners of Holy Ghost to deepen their understanding of the Word as heard on Weekend Mass. Please use it for your reflec"on throughout the week and for sharing around your dinner table with family.) Published with permission;Title by Fr. Jaison Mangalath, S.V.D.Twenty-Sixth Sunday in OrdinarySeptember 26, 2021Exegesis of the 1st Reading: Numbers 11:25–29Moses now faces a real challenge: The people crave thekind of food they remember eating in Egypt (11:4–5).Overwhelmed by their demand, Moses complains to Godthat the people have become too much of a burden forhim; he wonders how he could possibly satisfy their demandfor food (11:11–15). In this reading God provides a solution.1) Word of God. At God’s command, Moses selects 70elders. God then shares with them some of the spirit thatis on Moses. As soon as they receive that spirit, theybegin to prophesy. Thus God has arranged for Moses tohear the word of God proclaimed by the elders standingaround him. The lesson seems to be that Moses shoulduse the spirit he has to preach God’s word—just as theelders do with that same spirit. Proclaiming God’s truth isfar better than complaining to God about the burden hecarries. The remainder of the reading reveals a change inMoses as a result of the word spoken by the elders.2) People of the Lord. There are two men within the Israelitecamp preaching the word of God to the people. WhenJoshua learns of this, he asks Moses to put a stop to itsince he gave them no permission to speak. But Mosesrefuses to interfere. His focus is no longer on himself buton the people. He now understands that the people needthe word of God and not the food they crave. Moses evenwishes all the people could be filled with God’s word andproclaim that word as prophets do. Significantly, Mosesno longer speaks of Israel as a burden. Now he speaks ofthem as the people of the Lord. Thus God has correctedMoses’ thinking and also provided the people with whatthey really need to advance toward the promised land.Exegesis of the 2nd Reading: James 5:1–61) Greed. James has strong words for those who use theirwealth to satisfy their own desires rather than the needsof others.2) Judgment. Earthly wealth will fade away and givetestimony against those who misused it. They will oneday stand before the Lord and judge of all.Exegesis of the Gospel: Mark 9:38–43Mark’s Gospel here concentrates on the demands forentering the kingdom of God. The requirements appear tobe quite radical. The current verses focus on toleranceand protecting the “little ones” from scandal. These sayingsreflect the attitude Jesus himself communicated to hisfollowers as well as the importance they maintained forthe early Church. The radicality emphasized in these sayings ismeant to stress their importance. They were not necessarilymeant to be interpreted literally.1) The power of the name. A disciple of Jesus is upsetthat someone outside their group is driving out demons. The person is doing this by imploring the name of Jesusand obviously it works. The disciple wants Jesus to prohibitthis, not because it works, but because the person doing itis an outsider. The disciple feels that only those who areconsidered official insiders should be able to use Jesus’name to cast out demons.2) Jesus supports tolerance. Jesus no doubt surprised thedisciple by moving in the opposite direction. He instructshis disciple to allow the outsider to continue using Jesus’name to cast out demons. The fact that the person is usingJesus’ name bespeaks a certain level of faith in Jesus. Theprinciple Jesus employs is: “For whoever is not against usis for us.” People who do good in the name of Jesus cannotbe opposed to Jesus, even if they are not officially part ofhis following. Jesus does not demand a profession offaith before allowing anyone to use his name for a goodcause. Doing good is far better than saying the rightthing. Jesus is a paradigm of tolerance.3) Do not cause scandal. Here Jesus is concerned withthe “little ones.” These are not necessarily children butprobably people whose faith is still tender or disciplesjust beginning their journey. The images used are strongand shocking to show just how serious Jesus considersscandal to be. It causes one to stumble. It hinders faith.Death and mutilation are better than ending up in Gehenna,an image for the fires of hell. Jesus makes his pointstrong and clear.
