He executes a brilliant trifectaas stand-up comedian, actor, andauthor. Receiving critical acclaim,he performs over 200 nights a yearto sold-out audiences throughoutEurope, New Zealand, Canada, and The United States. Black’s liveperformances provide a cathartic releaseof anger and disillusionment for hisaudience. He yells so they don’t haveto. A passionate performer who is morepissed-off optimist than mean-spiritedcurmudgeon.Black is the rare comic who can causean audience to laugh themselves intoincontinence while making compellingpoints about the absurdity of our world. He was born in Washington D.C. andraised in Silver Spring, MD. Colicky asa baby, it seems he was destined to beangry and easily irritated. His mother,a teacher, and his father, a mechanicalengineer, instilled in both Black and hisyounger brother Ron the importance ofeducation and the necessity to questionauthority; lessons which have influencedBlack throughout his private andprofessional life. When he was 12, his father took him tohis first play and he quickly fell in lovewith the theater. This ultimately led himto pursue a career in drama. Degreesfollowed from the University of NorthCarolina and Yale Drama School, with astint in Colorado owning a theater witha group of friends in the interim. Duringhis tenure at UNC, Lewis first venturedinto stand-up, performing at Cat’s Cradlein Chapel Hill.Stand-up continued to be a steadypresence as he pursued his career in

theater. Black eventually settled in NewYork City and became the playwrightin-residence at the West Bank Café’sDownstairs Theatre Bar. In additionto overseeing the works on stage, heemceed every show. As the West Bankgrew, so did Black’s skill as a standup and eventually, the fulfillment ofperforming stand-up outweighed thatof working in the theater. Having foundhis public voice, Black left the WestBank in the late ‘80s to pursue standup full time. In 1996, his friend LizzWinstead tapped him to create a weeklysegment for a show she was producingon Comedy Central called The DailyShow. The segment, a three minute rantabout whatever was bothering him atthe moment, evolved into Back in Black. In the midst of a rigorous touringschedule, regular TV appearancesand movie roles, Black has writtenthree books, Nothing’s Sacred (Simonand Schuster, 2005), Me of Little Faith(Riverhead Books, 2008), and I’mDreaming of a Black Christmas (RiverheadBooks, 2010). All garnered criticalpraise as well commercial successand spent numerous weeks on theNew York Times best seller list. Asa playwright Black has penned over40 plays, many of which have beenproduced around the country. In addition to his professional pursuits,Black is dedicated to a number ofcharitable organizations. As a long-timementor with the 52nd Street Project,he was roasted in Charred Black 2007which drew the largest fundraisingnumbers in the Project’s history. He’sa member of their Advisory Board,Co-Chair of their Capital Campaign, and in 2000, the Ron Black MemorialScholarship Fund was created in memoryof his late brother.Today Black maintains residencesin both Manhattan and Chapel Hill,NC. Still loyal to his alma mater, he’sworked with UNC students to createthe Carolina Comedy Festival, a yearlyfestival on the UNC campus that notonly highlights performances, but alsoprovides workshops and lectures forbudding comics, writers and performers. With his involvement at UNC, hecontinues a life-long commitment toeducation and the arts. In his leisure time,Black likes to play golf, even though golfhates him.Broadway Center presentsDAVINA & THE VAGABONDSSATURDAY, MARCH 25, 2017AT 7:30 P.M.THEATER ON THE SQUAREAPPROXIMATE RUN TIME:90 MINUTES WITH INTERMISSIONDAVINA & THE VAGABONDS(DATV) have created a stir on thenational music scene with their highenergy live shows, top musicianship,sharp-dressed professionalism, andSowers’ commanding stage presence. With influences ranging from FatsDomino and the Preservation HallJazz Band to Aretha Franklin andTom Waits, the band is convertingaudiences across the world. In 2011Davina released her first full length, all original album Black Cloud. It wasnamed one of the 10 best releases of theyear by the Minneapolis Star & Tribuneand awarded 4½ stars from DownbeatMagazine. Their next release in 2014,Sunshine, hit number 13 in the BillboardBlues Chart and led them to be amusical feature on the hit BBC show,Later with Jools Holland.DATV’s shows are filled with NewOrleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, dark theatrical moments that evokeKurt Weill, and tender gospel passages.Davina’s voice and stage presence defySPONSORSPARTNERcategory in a different way. She hasbeen compared to Etta James, AmyWinehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday, and Betty Boop, but comparisons don’tsuffice: Davina is a true original.Bringing you 100 years of Americanmusic and many originals, which lendthemselves to the American Songbook, the band brings edgy nostalgia and freshnew music. This rollicking quintet isheld together by Davina’s keyboardplaying, with acoustic bass, drums, and a spicy trumpet and trombonehorn section. The group’s focused, clean sound and emphasis on acousticinstruments is novel to both blues andjazz worlds, and sets the show closer toNew Orleans than to Chicago.encoreartsseattle.com     9
