Course Summary Focus on:– Identifying the need and developing concepts– Analysis of Machine Elements and Synthesis– Materials Selection– Synthesis, Design, Modeling, Fabrication andCharacterization of a product or system Teamwork will be encouraged– Homework– ProjectME 423: Machine DesignInstructor: Ramesh Singh9

Engineering Design: Key Roles inDesign ProcessClientDesignerUser Client: A person or groupor company that wants adesign conceived User: A person who willemploy or operatewhatever is beingdesigned Designer: Solve theclient’s problem in a waythat meets the user’sneedsME 423: Machine DesignInstructor: Ramesh Singh10

Engineering Design: Definitions Engineering design is a systematic, intelligent process in whichengineers generate, evaluate, and specify solutions fordevices, systems, or processes whose form(s) and function(s)achieve clients’ objectives and users’ needs while satisfying aspecified set of constraints. In other words, engineering design is a thoughtful process forgenerating plans or schemes for devices, systems, orprocesses that attain given objectives while adhering tospecified constraints.ME 423: Machine DesignInstructor: Ramesh Singh11

Key Definitions Design objective: A feature or behavior that the designshould have or exhibit Design constraint: A limit or restriction on the features orbehaviors of the design. A proposed design isunacceptable if these limits are violated Functions: Things a designed device or system issupposed to do.Engineering functions almost always involve transformingor transferring energy, information, or material. It includessupporting and transmitting forces, the flow of current, theflow of charge, the transfer of material, and so onME 423: Machine DesignInstructor: Ramesh Singh12

Key Definitions Means: A way or a method to make a functionhappen e.g. friction is a means of fulfilling a functionof applying a braking force Form: The shape and structure of something asdistinguished from its material. We will not deal with form but form is central toindustrial design, a very important part of product designME 423: Machine DesignInstructor: Ramesh Singh13

Measuring Success of EngineeringDesign Metric: A standard of measurement; in the context ofengineering design, a scale on which the achievement of adesign’s objectives can be measured and assessed Specifications: A scale on which the achievement of a design’sfunctions can be measured. Specifications are engineeringstatements of the extent to which functions are performed bya designME 423: Machine DesignInstructor: Ramesh Singh14

Design ProcessME 423: Machine DesignInstructor: Ramesh Singh15

Identify the need. Understand the need.PathfindingDesign Process Steps Describe the need: what is desired, what is undesired.Constraints. Break down the problem in parts. Research: what exists out there overall and for sub-problems. Identify options: that could meet the requirements/constraints. Analyze, evaluate: effectiveness of options. Modify, combine asTechnologyneeded. Select most effective option.Selection Detailed design: CAD, stress analysis, manufacturing specs.Technology Prototyping and TestingDevelopment Manufacturing process designRamp & Production.High-volumeME 423: Machine DesignInstructor: Ramesh Singh17
