Harmonica Fun Facts! The harmonica was invented over 200 yearsago. Millions of people all over the worldhave enjoyed it because its easy to play andgoes anywhere you do. You probably haveseen it played around a camp fire in moviesof the old west! The harmonica has some cool nicknamessuch as harp, tin sandwich, mouth organ andMississippi Saxophone. How does the harmonica make thosesounds? Inside, there are very thin reeds. When you blow air in and out of theharmonica, the reeds vibrate. Each reed isa different length and they each produce adifferent note as they vibrate. The harmonica was thefirst musical instrumentplayed in outer space!Early Astronauts tookone with them!Instruction BookletInstruction Booklet BLUE.indd 556/27/10 6/27/10

Holding Your AirwaveHarmonica is Easy! The Suzuki Airwave Harmonicahas a sleek new design that makesit really easy to hold on to. Its longand flat, and has a large surface area for your fingers.Other harps are short and stubby and hard to hold, but not Airwave!Hold the Airwave Harmonica with your thumbunderneath and your other fingers on the top, likeyou see in the picture. Pretend you are eating asandwich and hold the harmonica the same way!Just don’t eat it!!16Instruction Booklet BLUE.indd 62345Airwave Harmonica6/27/10 6/27/10

If You Can Breathe, You Can Playthe Airwave!Right now, lets not worry about playing a song. Letsjust play a few notes. We can learn the note names andsome songs later.Put the Airwave Harmonica up to your lips and gentlyblow some air OUT of the harmonica. You don’t haveto blow very hard to make a sound. Did you hear anote? Now, lets make another note by breathing airINTO the harmonica. Just breathe in and the harmonicawill produce another note. Did you hear it? Breatheout, then in. In and out. In and out. Move your lips toanother area of the Airwave and do the same thing.See, now you are producing all kinds of notes that canbe used to play a real song!5BreatheInInstruction BookletInstruction Booklet BLUE.indd 7BlowOut76/27/10 6/27/10

Let’s Play Some NotesNow that you can play some notes and make soundson the Airwave, lets figure out how to arrange themso that you can play a song.On the Airwave Harmonica, the holes you blow intoare placed farther apart than other harmonicas. Thismakes it easier to play individual notes and to choosethe note you want.Lets try to play one note at a time. Lookat the face. Push your lips out and forma small “O”. This is called the “Pucker”.It will allow you to blow air into theharmonica to make one note only. This isimportant because sometimes you want to play onlyone note at a time.Next, put your Airwave Harmonica up to your“Pucker” and gently blow into the hole marked q, onthe left side of the harmonica. Try to hear ONLY thisone note. It is the “C” note. Now, try blowing into thehole marked, w, e, r and all the way to 1).12345678910“C” Note8Instruction Booklet BLUE.indd 8Airwave Harmonica6/27/10 6/27/10

Play the C Major ScaleThe C Major Scale uses all thebasic notes to play a song. It is aneasy set of notes to learn becauseit does not contain any sharps orflats. Perhaps you sang a C majorscale in school and learned thenames of the notes:Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do.When we begin playing a song, line up the numberthat is shown in the circle. If the number has a BLUE circle around it, youBLOW OUT.If the number has a RED circle around it, youBREATHE IN.q Blow Outq Breathe InThe number tells you which hole to use.Now let’s play the C Major Scale:r r t t y y u uInstruction BookletInstruction Booklet BLUE.indd 996/27/10 6/27/10
