This aims to go far beyond the sports provision seen at most UKuniversities, by integrating sport with university-wide efforts to attract and retainstudents, to accelerate their learning and support transition towards graduatecareers.The strategy is global in ambition and seeks to connect our practice withlearners, stakeholders, and partners in local and international contexts. Since 2010 we have been working hardto promote physical activity and personal development through sport.We are now setting out to build on our reputation and extend the impact of sport and physical activity for allstudents, staff and stakeholders, the university itself, and our regional, national, and international partners.It is in this exciting and dynamic context that we are looking to appoint a new Director of Sport & ActiveCampus who will report directly to the University Pro Vice Chancellor for Education & Experience, to: Lead, develop and manage East London Sport, the University's flagship sport and physical activityservice, including sports facilities, sports development programmes, associated staff and the delivery ofeffective partnerships to create accessible opportunities for members of the university community to bephysically active. Be responsible for the ongoing development and successful implementation of the East London GlobalSports Strategy, working in conjunction with professional service and academic colleagues across theuniversity and integrating effectively with external local, regional, and national partners. Actively raise the profile of the University of East London as a leading sporting institution and a hub forsport, physical activity, and education in the region, nationally and globally. Ensure that the service takes a proactive approach to enhancing student recruitment, satisfaction,experience, attainment and employability through the provision of sport and physical activity as a vehiclefor delivering the university’s ground breaking Vision 2028 strategic plan.5

To lead delivery of the East London Global Sports Strategy. To provide coordination across all schools and services with an interest in sports and physicalactivity, academic and otherwise, to maximise opportunity for the university, our students, andstaff as well as local community and partners. To provide inspiring and highly visible cross-institutional leadership that champions the benefitsof sport and physical activity for all.Strategic Planning To be responsible for the evolution, implementation and monitoring of the ambitious ELGSSstrategy and associated business development plans and workstreams, ensuring efficient andeffective use of resources to fulfil the stated objectives. To ensure the university has coordinated plans for all facility developments relating to sport andphysical activity, working in partnership with the Estates and Facilities team and through the‘Connected Campus’ project. To identify and secure opportunities for educational and commercial partnerships and managerelationships with key stakeholders. To proactively build and nurture relationships across the sport and education ecosystem,contributing to external strategy development where possible and ensuring the university’s voiceis heard at the highest levels of local, national, and international governance and decision-makingbodies. To create and embed the use of data to report and analyse service effectiveness and impact.Service Delivery To ensure the highest possible standards in delivering all projects and services, exceedingexpectations and being a benchmark to which others in the sector aspire to emulate. To develop and implement a broad programme of activities that:-encourage a healthy and active lifestyle for all members of the University and localcommunities we serve, foregrounding health gain as a component of learning gain.-proactively identify and work to remove barriers to participation in sport and physical activity,ensuring equity of access and experience across all programmes.-encourage students to maximise their potential in and through sport and physical activity.-attract, recruit and support talented athletes to the university’s high-performance programme.-enable the fulfilment of the university’s commitments to impact and innovation, ensuring thatsport and physical activity presents opportunities for research and knowledge exchange. To work closely with the UELSU in providing opportunities for participation in a wide range ofactivities and ensure effective channels of communication and consultation. To encourage high levels of achievement through BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport)and other competitive activities through team and individual development and buildingrelationships with external clubs. To liaise with academic schools and services to support the delivery of academic and otherdevelopment programmes, for example the mental wealth and professional fitness modules andthe Edge extracurricular enrichment programme. To develop programmes to encourage community involvement including links with localeducation providers, charities, clubs, and other partners. To expand upon and enhance the successful sports scholarship programme, in conjunction withschools, the student recruitment team, external relations directorate, and external partners.Communication/Partnerships To develop and lead a customer facing service that satisfies and inspires the confidence ofstudents, staff, the broader community, and all other external users. To maintain a high profile, regionally and nationally, and represent the University as a sectorleading ambassador for sport and physical activity within the educational ecosystem. To foster links with local communities to encourage participation in facilities and programmes. To build sustainable partnerships which will ultimately contribute to achieving Vision 2028 and theaims of the ELGSS. To maintain and develop effective partnerships and programmes with, for example, LondonBorough of Newham and neighbouring boroughs, London Sport, Sport England, LLDC, GLA,NGBs, Skills Active, BUCS, TASS, and a diverse range of local sports clubs which can contribute tothe delivery of the overall vision.Resource Management To develop and manage the university's sport and physical activity facilities. To draw up and keep under review a business plan to support all elements of the strategy. To devise pricing structures and partnership models. To ensure a balanced budget and cost-effective methods of operation and income generation. To seek external support and funding for relevant initiatives and the growth of the service. To ensure compliance with the University's financial regulations. To be responsible for the staff of the service, including recruitment, monitoring and review ofworkloads and responsibilities, staff development and to carry out annual performance reviews. To ensure the staffing structure is appropriate to support planned and resourced activities7

Educated to degree level in a relevant subject area. A higher degree in a relevant subject area is desirable but not essential.Knowledge and Experience Substantial experience at a senior management level in sport management. Experience of both operational management and strategic sport development. Experience of development and management of partnership and joint programmes. Experience and proven track record of leading, managing and motivating a team. Experience of writing and presenting reports and using data to plan service innovations. Significant experience of income generation activities and the ability to gain funds from externalsources. Experience of working in a culturally diverse environment and providing a commensurate andinclusive range of sports physical activity opportunities. Proven experience of planning and budget management skills. Experience of managing sport and physical activity in a comparable institution would be desirablebut is not essential. An understanding of the sport and physical activity landscape both nationally and regionally wouldbe desirable but is not essential.Skills and Abilities Excellent leadership and motivational skills with proven interpersonal skills. Excellent negotiating skills and the ability to get things done via effective influencing. The ability to deliver against strategic, quantifiable objectives. Digitally literate with a track record of using technology to drive innovation and service delivery.Personal Attributes and Qualities Demonstrable commitment and advocacy for sport and physical activity for all. The ability to multi-task and work under pressure with a flexible approach to working hours. An ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team. Capacity to foster positive working relationships with colleagues at all levels of the organisation,as well as with students.8
