Partnering to deliver healthyand restorative buildingsThe International Living Future Institute (ILFI) and theInternational WELL Building Institute (IWBI), have agreed towork collaboratively to promote the design, constructionand operations of healthy and restorative buildings. The twoorganizations will work together to identify opportunitiesto align the two rating systems, coordinate events andeducation offerings, and promote building practices thatsignificantly raise the standard of what buildings should be.2

About the Living Building Challenge The Living Building Challenge is the built environment’s mostambitious holistic performance standard. The program waslaunched in 2006 and is administered by the InternationalLiving Future Institute, a non-profit organization offeringgreen building and infrastructure solutions at every scale—from small renovations to whole cities. The mission of theInstitute is to lead and support the transformation towardcommunities that are socially just, culturally rich andecologically restorative. The Living Building Challenge is a green building certificationprogram and sustainable design framework that has reframed the conversation to visualize the ideal for the builtenvironment. It uses the metaphor of a flower becausethe ideal built environment should function as cleanly andefficiently as a flower. The framework is structured aroundseven Petals: Place, Water, Energy, Health Happiness,Materials, Equity, and Beauty.Certification is based on actual performance, rather thanmodeled or anticipated outcomes. Therefore, projects mustbe operational for at least twelve consecutive months priorto evaluation.Projects earn Living Certification by achieving all Imperativesassigned to a Typology (either Building, Renovation, orLandscape Infrastructure), and Petal Certification bysatisfying the requirements of at least three Petals (at leastone of which must be either Water, Energy or Materials).Zero Energy Certification requires projects use on-siterenewables to meet 100 percent of their energy needs.Learn about our other initiatives and programs on ourwebsite: living-future.org3

About the WELL Building Standard TMThe WELL Building StandardTM (WELL) is the first buildingstandard to focus exclusively on the health and wellnessof the people in buildings. WELL is a performance-basedsystem for measuring and certifying features of buildingsthat impact human health and well-being through sevenconcepts: air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort andmind. It marries best practices in design and constructionwith evidence-based medical and scientific research –harnessing buildings and communities as vehicles to supporthuman health and well-being.Since we spend about 90% of our time indoors, thebuildings where we live, work, learn and relax have aprofound effect on our well-being: how we feel, what weeat, and how we sleep at night. WELL is grounded in a bodyof research that explores this connection between buildingsand people. Each WELL feature is designed to addressissues that impact the health, comfort or knowledge ofpeople in buildings through design, operations and behavior.4

Purpose of this documentIWBI and ILFI recognize the complementary nature ofaddressing holistic environmental and social impacts withinthe built-environment while specifically addressing healthand well-being at the organizational and occupant level. Bothorganizations understand the value of multiple certificationsfor projects addressing broad sustainability issues and striveto support those efforts. This document provides assistance for those project teamsseeking to obtain both a Living Building Challenge certificationand a WELL Certified . Unless noted otherwise, thisdocument refers to the Living Building Challenge 3.1 andWELL Building Standard v1.To simplify the process for projects pursuing both programs,ILFI and IWBI have developed the following document toshow how Living Building Challenge can assist in meetingWELL features, and to show how WELL features can assist inmeeting the Living Building Challenge.5

How to read this documentThis document outlines how Living Building Challengeimperatives may contribute to achieving WELL features.Conversely, the document indicates which WELL featuresmay contribute to achieving Living Building Challengeimperatives.IWBI has evaluated this mapping and provided rulingsof equivalency for entire WELL features or parts that aresatisfied by the Living Building Challenge Imperatives.ILFI has provided similar rulings for which Living BuildingChallenge Imperatives can be completely or partially satisfiedby fulfilling WELL features or parts of features. This analysiswas based on Living Building Challenge 3.1 (May 2016) andthe WELL Building Standard v1 (Q2 2017).The document outlines a level of equivalence for each LBCImperative and WELL feature. Each level is assigned an iconas follows:Equivalence IconsComplete6PartialNotEquivalent

The icons indicate the following: Complete: The entire feature or Imperative has beenevaluated and deemed satisfactory to achieve the intentof the WELL feature or LBC imperative indicated. Theawarded feature or imperative can be used as verificationthat the requirement has been satisfied. Partial: The Imperatives share a similar outcome, thoughrequirements of one are not completely met by the otherand it is likely that additional steps will be needed. Forexample, an awarded feature satisfies a portion of anImperative’s requirements, but additional compliancestrategies and documentation are needed. Not Equivalent: The Imperative or feature is currently notaddressed in one of the programs, or there are similaritiesof intent but the requirements or focus are sufficientlydisparate to resist direct comparison. Some suchImperatives, however, may be recognized under the WELLInnovation category.Typically, Living Building Challenge Imperatives are broader, and WELL features are more specific in their focus; thereforeit can take several WELL features to meet one LBCImperative, and one Imperative may contribute towardsmultiple features. Due to this difference, in Table 1: WELLBuilding Standard to Living Building Challenge, ILBI has listedwhich WELL features are met by LBC Imperatives. In Table2: Living Building Challenge to WELL Building Standard, onthe other hand, ILFI has listed which additional actions areneeded beyond the relevant WELL features and parts. Theresulting alignments are shown in the tables below.7

How to apply equivalentoutcomes to your projectIWBI and ILFI have agreed upon the equivalent outcomesidentified in this document. The tables on the followingpages detail LBC imperatives deemed equivalent to WELLfeatures, and vice versa. Please note that there are differentlevels of equivalency defined under the ‘How to read thisdocument’ section. In order to streamline the certification process, reduceddocumentation may be submitted where outcomes have alreadybeen verified in the alternate rating program. Project teams arerequired to demonstrate that outcomes being applied have beenverified with appropriate supporting evidence.Claiming Living Building Challenge inWELL Building StandardWhere a project has achieved, or is pursuing Living BuildingChallenge Certification and seeks to apply these effortsto achieve a WELL feature, the project should submit thefollowing during WELL documentation review: Short report identifying which LBC imperative are beingused to claim WELL features, in line with the guidanceprovided in this document.-If already awarded, proof of awarded LBC imperative/petal may be submitted in lieu of the ascribed WELLverification method in appendix D of the WELLBuilding Standard.-If a project is pursuing LBC and WELL Certificationin parallel, the project may indicate that final proof ofaward will be submitted post project performanceverification. In this case the feature will stay as pendinguntil proof of award is submitted.Projects using a more recent version of the WELL BuildingStandard can still use the crosswalk without modifications.8

Claiming WELL Building Standard inLiving Building ChallengeWhere a project has achieved WELL Certification and seeksto apply these efforts to achieve a Living Building ChallengeLiving, Petal or Zero Energy Certification, the project shouldsubmit the following during the Living Building ChallengeAudit: Short report identifying which WELL features are beingused to claim Living Building Challenge imperatives, in linewith the guidance provided in this document; and Supporting evidence for each Living Building ChallengeImperative or part using WELL equivalency9-Features that are “Complete:” fulfilment of LBCImperatives may provide proof of awarded WELLfeature or part(s) in lieu of the Living BuildingChallenge documentation for those Imperatives.-Features that are “Partial:” fulfilment of LBCImperatives must provide proof of awarded WELLfeature or part(s) as well as documentation of thefulfilment of all listed additional requirements.
