Page TwoSt. Eugene ParishThird Sunday of LentFrom the Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters,Together, we are on a journey marked by prayer, fasting, andalmsgiving. As we begin this Third Sunday of Lent, we do so togrow stronger as disciples of Jesus Christ, but we do not do thisalone. We are called to grow together as a joyful, loving community that supports oneanother and inspires others to seek an encounter with our Lord. This is why we are calledtogether as a parish family.Your weekly and Easter gifts are an important part of bringing our parish’s mission tolife. The contributions of parishioners during the Lenten/Easter seasons and throughoutthe entire year constitute a sizable portion of our annual budget to fund vital ministriesand areas of operation for our parish. And with Mass attendance still limited, our regularcollections continue to suffer substantially on a weekly basis. Currently we areexperiencing a deficit shortfall of 97,477 since July 1st. If you add that to the 84,316deficit from the past fiscal year, that puts us at a total deficit of over 181,793! sincealmost a year ago and the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. This trend will not bodewell for our parish as we look to our future.I (we) fully understand the fear and concern many in our community have aboutcontracting this virus. It is real. I also understand that many of our parishioners are notquite ready to return to church, but as more and more of us get fully vaccinated, this fearshould be alleviated. What I find very difficult to understand, however, is our nonreturning as well as all of our non-supporting registered members’ failure to continuetheir financial support of their church (in their absence) that continues to operate andserve you and everyone even when you are not here at this time. If our parish is to thriveand survive it will need you to do your part to keep us viable for the future. I can’t say itany clearer or more directly. Please offer your financial assistance if you wish to identifyyourself as a member of our community of faith. Currently, we are in the process ofanalyzing our registered memberships levels of support for our parish. What we arefinding is startling and terribly disappointing. Much more detail on this matter willfollow and this information will be shared at a later date.

March 7, 2021St. Eugene ParishPage ThreeFor this reason, I humbly ask that you prayerfully consider making your weekly ormonthly contributions as well as a one-time significantly larger-than-normal Easter gifteven though you may not be coming to church. This is to ensure that our parishministries and operations can continue. You can send or drop off your gift to our parishoffice, or online at our parish webpage: www.st-eugene.org and clicking on the GiveCentral logo in the middle of the page and then follow the prompts. And if you are ableto resume or increase your weekly contribution, you may do so through our webpage, aswell. If you are unable to make a financial gift currently, I ask that you continue to pray forour St. Eugene family and know that I and we are praying for you.Our parish community has been able to creatively adapt how we reach out and offer thelight and love of God from our livestreamed Masses to our Ministry of Prayer members,as well as maintaining regular office hours. And thanks to the commitment of our staffand dedicated volunteers, in-person worship at Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, Stations ofthe Cross, Confessions, Daily Mass and more continue safely. We do need additionalvolunteers to assist with Masses given the necessity to register, usher and clean thebuilding, thus ensuring everyone’s safety. I also invite you to give of your time to theextent you are able. To volunteer, please drop off, send me or email me your name, telephone number and/or email address at churchoffice@st-eugene.org.Please know that you are a gift to our St. Eugene family. Your presence, whether in spiritor in person, means more to our local Church than you can imagine.May the Lord be with each one of you during the Lenten and upcoming Easter season. Icontinue to pray for you and ask that you continue to pray for me.God Bless,Fr. Rich YanosP.S. Just a reminder that next weekend we resume DaylightSaving Time. So, don’t forget to Spring Forward by movingyour clocks ahead one hour before going to bed onSaturday night, March 13th!

The no on of covenant as arela onship between two par es carries with it anexpecta on of mutual accountability and fidelity to theterms of the covenant. When God forged the covenant withthe Jewish people on Mt. Sinai, it was a pledge of God’sprotec on, and it would forever permit them familiaraccess as the Chosen People. For their part, the Jewishpeople were to observe the dictates of the law, summarized most succinctly here in the form of the TenCommandments. To be in a covenantal rela onship withthe Lord God requires an exclusive rela onship, just asdiscipleship with Jesus—ritualized in bap sm—demands atotal allegiance to him and none other. Copyright J. Forty years ago, there was merely one set of readings for Sunday: two readings only, an Epistle, and a Gospel. Each Sunday of the year had two readings, and they never varied from year to year. In the late1960s, we received an enriched book of readings (a lec onary) keyed to a course of readings over threeyears, named A, B, and C. The architects of this new plan realized that in Jesus’ me, it took three years toread through the Law and the Prophets completely in synagogue worship. With the renewed liturgy, ourworship has embraced this same rhythm that Jesus experienced in public prayer. This year we are using the readings from Year B. The readings for Year A, however, are closelya uned to the Church’s work of preparing to celebrate bap sm at Easter. When the worship assemblyincludes people in the final stages of prepara on, the Year B readings will o en be set aside in favor of thereadings from Year A, which this week include the story of the woman at the well. She is a fi ng companionfor those thirs ng for living water.—James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

We stand when the ministers enter. In Western culture, standing is a sign of a en on, a mark of respect: all stand when the judge enters thecourtroom, for example. Standing is also an ancient posture of prayer, men oned frequently in the OldTestament. When the readings begin, we sit down: a listening posture. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet to listen to histeaching; the crowds sat on the hillside or the seashore to hear his words. Kneeling is another posture that isfull of meaning. It expresses adora on and worship, but it can also express humility and contri on. We bow:a sign of honor and reverence, acknowledging the presence of God, especially when we receive the Eucharist. And there are other ritual gestures as well—striking the breast, genuflec ng, and of course making the signof the cross. The liturgy invites us to pray with our whole person—with heart and mind, voice and body.Corinna Laughlin, Copyright J. S.
