FOREWORD.I first stumbled across Freeman Colby one chilly fall afternoon in2012. Or rather, Colby stumbled across me, when a typewritten transcriptof his diary tumbled into my hands from a dusty archive box at theHenniker Historical Society. I asked local historians and teachers about thedocument; everybody shrugged, nobody had read it. For all I knew,Colby's tale had been sitting unread in that box for the past hundred years.From his first page, Colby comes across as a true Yankee characterwith a gripping story to tell. Drawing out that story in comics is my way oftrying to understand it. By now, I feel like I've spent a good part of the pastfew years in Maryland, 1862, right alongside Colby and "Company K"through all those long days and cold nights. I hope this book gives you asimilar sense of their world.The words in this book are Freeman Colby's – punctuation,spelling, and all; whenever I made some small changes to suit the comicsformat, I drew a little squiggle-mark ( ) under the panel. The drawings aremine, of course with the aid of many reference images (see the Appendix).And the story. Well, now it's yours. Ours. Enjoy. Marek / Henniker, NH / 2016
