CapabilitiesPrecision with VisionCommitted to ExcellenceGlobal ReachBarden’s ProductsPrecision StandardsThe Barden Corporation is recognized as a worldleader in the design and manufacture of superprecision ball bearings. For more than six decadesthe Barden name has been synonymous withbearings of exceptional quality and precision andBarden bearings are renowned worldwide for theirhigh reliability and long operating life inchallenging applications.Originally founded in 1942 by Theodore Barthand Carl Norden in the United States, TheBarden Corporation has built an enviablereputation for producing some of the world’smost precise bearings and is now a key strategicmember of the multinational Schaeffler Group. The Group specializes in bearing technologiesand precision products for aerospace, industrialplant and automotive industries and has over74,000 employees at more than 180 locationsworldwide. The Barden product line is comprised largely ofradial, single and double row, angular contact(separable and non-separable) and deep groove, super precision ball bearings. All products in therange can meet and will usually exceed ABEC 9(ISO P2) standards, while full traceability back toraw materials can also be provided.Precision ball bearings are manufactured totolerance standards defined by the Annular BearingEngineering Committee (ABEC) of the AmericanBearing Manufacturers Association (ABMA). Thesestandards are accepted by the American NationalStandards Institute (ANSI) and can be seen asbroadly equivalent standards for the InternationalOrganization for Standardization (ISO).Barden offers thousands of bearing variationswhich are used in virtually every sector of industrywhere there is the need to meet critical tolerances, high speeds and performance under demandingoperating conditions. These include keycomponents for the aerospace and defensesectors, vacuum pumps, food processing, robotics and medical equipment, includingx-ray and CAT scanners and high speed dentalhandpiece turbines.Barden’s success has been built on a solidfoundation of manufacturing and engineeringdesign expertise, a highly skilled workforce andthe ability to design bespoke engineered solutionsfor its customers. The Barden Corporation boasts state-of-the-artfacilities at its manufacturing plants in Danbury,USA and Plymouth, UK, both of which havesome of the world’s most sophisticated machinetools, production equipment and inspectionsystems installed. As a supplier to some of themost prolific blue chip companies across theglobe, quality is of the utmost importancethroughout the organization. Stringentstandards are applied to every element of thebusiness, from the customer interface anddesign, through to production, packagingand delivery.Barden’s product offering also includes large andsmall diameter thin section ball bearings. Producedin standard cross sections and configurations, these bearings can be customised to meet theunique needs of each application.ISOStandardM&I ABECStandardM&I ISOStandard1P03P63PP65P55PP5A7P47PP4A9P29PP2ABEC standards define tolerances for several majorbearing dimensions and characteristics, which aredivided into envelope dimensions (bore, OD andwidth) and bearing geometry. Bores and OD’s maybe calibrated for greater mounting flexibility.Barden super precision bearings come in inch ormetric dimensions with diameters ranging from4mm (5/32") OD up to 300mm (11½") OD. A varietyof seals, shields and metallic/non-metallic cagedesigns are available to meet most requirements. Many Barden bearings operate comfortably atspeeds reaching 2 million dN (bore in mm x RPM),or above.4ABECStandardBarden encompassesspecialist product lines, including large and smalldiameter thin sectionbearings, dental bearings, spindle and turbinebearings, turbomolecularpump and machine toolbearings. While generalpurpose bearings for theseranges are manufacturedto ABEC 1 through to ABEC9 standards commercially,Barden bearings of thesetypes meet or exceed ABEC 7 geometric standards.Additionally, Barden’s ‘miniature and instrument’product range is produced in equivalent classeswith added refinements designated by suffixes, and are comparable to ABEC 7 or above.5

CapabilitiesPrecision with VisionBeyond ABECSizesApplicationsABEC classes are primarily concerned with bearingBarden’s super precision bearings are availablein metric or inch dimensions, with diametersranging from 1.5mm (0.06'') bore diameter to300mm (11½'') OD, and can be categorized aseither ‘miniature and instrument’ or ‘spindle andturbine’. This categorization is primarily related tosize, however the application can sometimes beused to classify the bearing.Complementing Barden’s range of standardproducts are a range of re-engineered, modifiedand custom-designed bearings, created to customerspecifications. Often designed around a particularapplication, these ‘special’ bearings offer userssomething new in terms of precision, size orconfiguration. Examples of Barden bearingapplications include:Configurations VACUUM PUMPS. TURBOMOLECULAR PUMPS. DRY PUMPS.tolerances and while very helpful in categorizingprecision, there are many other factors that affectthe suitability of a bearing to its application.Total bearing quality and ‘fitness for purpose’ incritical applications is of major importance andBarden often maintains closer tolerances thanspecified. There are several factors affecting bearingperformance and life which are not covered by ABECstandards and these are addressed during thedesign and manufacture of all Barden bearings. For example, ABEC criteria does not includefunctional testing of assembled bearings, yet this measure can be extremely important.Barden applies self-established standards, using proprietary tests and measuring equipmentto ensure the delivery of quiet, smooth-runningbearings that will perform exceptionally well.Bearing design is also omitted from ABECclassification but can make the difference betweensuccess and failure in bearing use. Barden offersa flexible and innovative design service for thispurpose, which takes into account all the factorslikely to impact on an application. As such, aBarden bearing may have specific low torquecharacteristics for a gyro gimbal, extra stiffnessfor a textile spindle, or extremely high reliabilityfor an aerospace accessory application. Becauseball quality affects the running smoothness of abearing, Barden uses both steel and ceramic ballsproduced to its own exacting specifications forball geometry, finish and size control.6Barden manufactures deep groove and angularcontact (separable and non-separable) bearings, available with a wide variety of seals, shields, speciality lubricants, metallic and non-metalliccage designs and calibration options. Thanks toan innovative design service, Barden productscan incorporate bespoke design features, such asdirect lubricant injection slots, fixings and flanges.Flanged bearings are especially useful in throughbored housings. The inboard side of the flangeprovides an accurate positioning surface forbearing alignment, eliminating a need for housingshoulders or shoulder rings.Barden products are available in a range of materialsto suit all applications, including SAE 52100carbon chrome steel, AISI 440C, AISI M50 andCronidur 30 , a high nitrogen steel originallydeveloped for critical aerospace applicationsDesign innovation has led to the developmentof extra wide, or cartridge width, deep groovebearings which are available in Series 9000 forapplications requiring extended operation withoutlubrication. These bearings offer more interior freevolume and can therefore hold more grease.Furthermore, improved lubricant life in extreme orhostile environments and increased speedabiltycan be offered through the use of ceramic balls. The benefits of hybrid bearings over traditionalsteel ball bearings are well known and all Bardenproducts can be fitted with ceramic balls.Vacuum pumps place severe demands on precisionbearings, which must operate reliably under extremeconditions and meet long life requirementsThe precision bearings in CAT scanner x-ray tubes usea special Barden bearing design which must operatein a vacuum under boundary lubrication conditions TOUCHDOWN BEARINGS. As part of theAll these aspects are echoed in Barden’s QualityManagement principles of continual improvement;zero defects and customer satisfaction.9

Bearing TypesH typeDeep Groove BearingsDeep groove ball bearings have full shoulders onboth sides of the raceways of the inner and outerrings. They can accept radial loads, thrust loadsin either direction, or a combination of loads. The full shoulders and the cages used in deepgroove bearings make them suitable for theaddition of closures. Besides single deep groovebearings with closures, Barden also offers duplexpairs with seals or shields on the outboard faces.Deep groove bearings are available in many sizes, with a variety of cage types. Their versatility makesthem the most widely used type.Ceramic (silicon nitride) balls can be specified toincrease bearing stiffness, reduce vibration levelsand prolong life.Deep groove bearings can also be supplied with afull complement of balls as a filler notch design. Infiller notch bearings the inner and outer ring havenotches which when aligned, allow balls to beloaded directly in to the raceway. Whilst this allowsfor full complement, these bearings are typicallysuited to radial loads.10Flanged bearings provide solid mounting for goodaxial control and eliminate the need for housingshoulders or shoulder rings. Housings can bethrough-bored to reduce manufacturing costs andsimplify assembly. When flanged bearings areused, the housing mounting surfaces must beaccurately machined to properly position andsupport the bearings.Flanged bearings are recommended when housingdesigns cannot accommodate full bearing width, orwhere the quality of the housing bore is a concern.Non-Separable Type (H): Inner ring hasfull shoulders, outer has one shouldercut away with a small retaining lip atthe edge of the raceway.J typeB typeNon-Separable Type (J): Outer ringhas full shoulders, inner ring has oneshoulder cut away with a small retaininglip at the edge of the raceway.Separable Type (B): Outer ring has fullshoulders, inner ring has one shouldercut away. The inner ring is removablefor mounting on the shaft separatelyfrom the outer ring assembly.Angular Contact BearingsAngular contact bearings have one ring shoulderremoved, either from the inner or outer ring. This allows a larger ball complement than foundin comparable deep groove bearings, giving agreater load capacity. Speed capacity of angularcontact bearings is also greater.Barden angular contact bearings have a nominalcontact angle ranging from 10 to 25 . They canbe used in pre-loaded duplex sets, back to back(DB) or face to face (DF) for supporting thrustloads in both directions or in tandem (DT) foradditional capacity.Contact angles are obtained by assembling thebearings to the appropriate radial play values. The smaller contact angles give better radialcapacity and rigidity while the higher contactangles give higher axial capacity and rigidity.Angular contact bearings support thrust loadsor combinations of radial and thrust loading. They can not accept radial loads alone – a thrustload of sufficient magnitude must be applied.A single angular contact bearing can be loaded inone thrust direction only, this may be an operatingload or pre-load.Separable and non-separable types are available.Separable bearings are useful where bearingsmust be installed in blind holes or where pressfits are required on the shaft and in the housing. The separable feature also permits dynamicbalancing of the rotating components with theinner ring mounted in place without the outerring and housing. As with deep groove bearings, angular contactbearings can also be supplied with a full complementof balls and no retainer. Full complement angularcontact bearings are designated by ‘X205’ in thenomenclature and are typically suited to axiallyloaded applications.11
