HISTORY OF SPLIT There was a dispute among Muslims over thequestion of succession? Most of Muhammad’s followers wanted thecommunity of Muslims to determine who wouldsucceed him. A smaller group thought Ali (married toMuhammad's daughter) should be the next leader.

HISTORY OF SPLIT The Sunnis prevailed and chose a successor to be thefirst caliph. Eventually, Ali was chosen as the fourthcaliph, but not before violent conflict broke out. Two of the earliest caliphs were murdered. Warerupted when Ali became caliph, and he too waskilled in fighting in A.D. 661 near the town of Kufa(present-day Iraq).

HISTORY O SPLIT War split the community of Muslims into twobranches that would never reunite. The war continued with Hussein (Ali’s son) leadingthe Shiites. His family and companions foughtagainst a very large Arab army of the caliph andwere all massacred. Hussein was decapitated and his head carried intribute.

HISTORY OF SPLIT The symbolism of Hussein’s death holds muchspiritual power for Shiites. This is a picture of Imam Husseinheld by a Shiite Muslim during a protest.

12TH IMAM In the 10th century, the 12th Shiite Imam went intohiding. They believe the Mahdi will come back at theend of time when their is a global conflict. Those who believe in the 12th Imam are known asTwelver Shiites. They are the majority of the Shiitesin the world today.

ISISHISTORY

BACKGROUND ISIS was once known as al-Qaedain Iraq. ISIS is more brutal than alQaeda (disagreed over tactics). ISIS is the richest terrorist group. It has more firepower than anyother jihadist organization. They now control territory as largeas an entire nation-state.

ISIS CONTROL ISIS was able to take over the Mosul Dam in August2014 - was built by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It was holding back 11 billion cubic meters of waterand producing 1,000 megawatts of electricity. A 60-foot wave would have killed hundreds ofthousands of Iraqis.

ISIS The ISIS troops haveslaughtered Jews, Christians,Yazidis, Alawites, and evenShiite Muslims. ISIS fighters mark the homesof Christians with an Arabicsymbol that has come to meanNazarene - a pejorative MiddleEastern term for Christians.

ISIS Their actions: They have sold women as sex slaves. They have beheaded men, women, and children. They have captured and burned alive captives. Their influence: They are more brutal than al-Qaeda.They control more land than many countries in theMiddle East. They control more firepower than any jihadistorganization in history and are the “world’s richestterrorist group” - hundreds of millions of dollars.

ISIS HISTORY In the ISIS Crisis, the authors connect five dots.-Dot One: The Mujahideen-Dot Two: The Taliban-Dot Three: al Qaeda-Dot Four: al Qaeda in Iraq-Dot Five: ISIS

ISIS HISTORY Dot One - Mujahideen fought against Russia andwere supported by the United States. One of theleaders was Osama bin Laden. Dot Two - Taliban filled the vacuum created whenSoviet domination ended. They were students of aradical form of Islam taught in Pakistan. Mohammed Omar seized power and allowed Osamabin Laden back into the country to build al Qaeda.

ISIS HISTORY Dot Three - al Qaeda (the base) carried our variousattacks (Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Tanzania) and 9/11. Dot Four - al Qaeda became a franchise operation. The leaders in Iraq was Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Dot Five - ISIS filled the power vacuum when alZarqawi was killed. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi becamethe head of the Islamic State of Iraq. This washappening during the so-called “Arab Spring.”

ISISTHEOLOGY

ISIS THEOLOGY Islam divides the world into two spheres: the houseof Islam (dar-al-Islam) and the house of war (dar-alharb). The house of Islam are nations under the control ofMuslims where Sharia law is enforced. The house of war includes nationsnot under Muslim control and donot submit to Sharia.

ISIS THEOLOGY Under a jihadist interpretation of Islam, there will bea constant conflict between the house of Islam andthe house of war until the house of war istransformed into the house of Islam. The conflict will not end until all land is conqueredfor Allah, and a global Islamic state, known as theCaliphate, is established. Sharia law will be enforced by the supreme leader, known as the caliph.

ABU BAKR ALBAGHDADI

ISIS THEOLOGY July 4, 2014 - Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was proclaimedat the Mosque in Mosul as the “Caliph Ibrahim” andleader of the Islamic State. “Fear Allah as he should be feared and do not dieexcept as Muslims. . . . Go forth, O mujahidin in thepath of Allah. Terrify the enemies of Allah and seekdeath. for the dunyā will come to an end, and thehereafter will last forever.”

ISIS ISLAMIC? President Obama says, “No religion condones thekilling of innocents. And the vast majority of ISIL’svictims have been Muslim.” Former Governor Howard Dean says, “I stoppedcalling these people Muslim terrorists. They’re aboutas Muslim as I am. I mean, they have no respect foranybody else’s life, that’s not what the Koran says.Europe has an enormous radical problem. I think ISISis a cult. Not an Islamic cult. I think it’s a cult.”

ISIS ISLAMIC? The Qur’an commands Muslims to engage in jihad. Sura 9:5 is known as the verse of the sword and says:“fight and slay the pagans wherever you find them, and seize them, beleager them, and lie in wait forthem in every stratagem.” Sura 9:123 says: “Fight the unbelievers who gird yourabout, and let them find firmness in you; and knowthat Allah is with those who fear Him.”

ISIS ISLAMIC? One section in the Qur’an (Sura 16:126) provides thebasis for “qisas.” This broad concept in Islamic lawallows for killing as retribution for crimes. The Qur’an also tells a story about Moses who wasfollowing a man who kills an innocent young boy.Later the man “enlightens” Moses by sharing hisreason for killing the boy (Sura 18:74-81). This is the justification for honor killings.

ISISACTIONS

ISIS CALL TO ACTION Sheik Abu Muhammad al-Adnani (ISIS spokesman)called on Muslims living in Western countries to findan infidel and “smash his head with a rock, poisonhim” or even “destroy his crops.” These are allusions to statements by Muhammed inthe Qur’an to Muslims livingin infidel countries.

ISIS GOALS ISIS is not content with spreading jihad in Iraq andSyria, but has set its sights on larger targets. For example, ISIS has threatened to destroy theKaaba in the Grand Mosque in Mecca. “We will kill those who worshipstones in Mecca and destroythe Kaaba.”

ISIS IN AMERICA? The subtitle of his book is ISIS in your own backyard. His warnings might have been easyto shrug off a few weeks ago. The attack in Garland, Texas was areminder of the influence of ISIS. ISIS took credit for the attack.

ISIS IN AMERICA? FBI Director James Comey told the NationalAssociation of Attorneys General that ISIS is a“chaotic spider web” that avidly uses social media toradicalize people across the United States. “We have investigations of people in various stagesof radicalizing in all 50 states.” “This is in all 50 states and inways that are very hard to see.”

THREE WAYS TO ATTACK “City Wolves” - James Comey talks about a networkof supporters and sympathizers in every state. Hecalls these homegrown jihadists “city wolves.” Returnees - Department of Homeland Security JehJohnson admitted that 40 of the estimated 180 thosetraveled overseas to fight ISIS have already returned. Open Border - former CIA officer Brian Fairchildexpressed concerns about smuggling biological orchemical weapons.

ISIS ATTACKS ISIS has been using very sophisticated technologyand social media to recruit others to their cause. No longer does a potential jihadist have to travel toanother country (Afghanistan, Syria, Sudan) to betrained. It can happen in our country. James Comey - “ISIS is focusing on the uniformedmilitary and law enforcement” - “It’s like the devilsitting on their shoulders, saying “Kill, kill, kill.”
