The Joplin Tornadoranks the fourthdeadliest with 153people killed.Weather Channel One third of the Joplincommunity was destroyed. Both hospitals and 70percent of Joplin’s medicalfacilities were heavilydamaged or destroyed.7638

By assisting in field triageSunday night and setting uptriage stations at the JoplinHumane Society on Mondaymorning, veterinarians weresaving lives. The community’s response to thehomeless pets was amazing. Residents searched throughneighborhoods for their pets. By mid-day Monday (the day after thetornado struck), hundreds of localresidents were at the Joplin HumaneSociety looking for lost pets,dropping off pets they had rescuedfrom the rubble, and volunteering.79The ASPCA Responds Just a few hours afterthe devastating tornadostruck Joplin, the ASPCAdispatchedpits disasterresponse team to leademergency shelteringefforts for animalsdisplaced by the tornado. The ASPCA set up anemergency animal shelternext to the Joplin HumaneSociety to help pet ownersneeding temporaryassistance in sheltering orcaring for their pets.8040
