ABC GUIDEL INES FOR REOPENING DURING PHYSICAL DIS TANCING3OVERVIEW (continued)Coronavirus in Scotland Guidance.(continued)We believe climbing will play a vital rolein ensuring the return of physical activity andthe ongoing health and well-being of thenation following the raising of Covid-19restrictions. We all understand howimportant any physical activity is, and as theChief Medical Officer for England stated‘There is no situation, no age, no condition, where exercise is not a good thing’.This document sets out the framework foropening climbing gyms and provides a basisfor individual operators to develop their ownoperating guidance for customers, staff andsupply chains in their own venues asnecessary. It is not intended to be exhaustive in coveringevery possible scenario but aims to provide aclear direction for the entire leisure sector, ensuring climbing gyms will fall within thebest practice of the leading recognised leisurefacilities.Individual climbing gyms may make their owndecisions to enhance or adapt thisto their own venues, and even go above thestandards within this document, but notlower, if they wish to be recognised asmeeting the standards. The strategy is based around 3 principles Hygiene Capacity Management Physical Distancing

ABC GUIDEL INES FOR REOPENING DURING PHYSICAL DIS TANCINGThe procedures below have been prepared by the ABC specifically for UK Climbing Walls. Theyare based on solid research and government guidelines and requirements. They should beread in conjunction with ‘ABC Guidelines’ submitted to the government through UK Active. There are 8 sections to these procedures:1. Hygiene2. Capacity Management3. Physical Distancing4. Coaching and Instructing5. Running Competitions (local andnational)6. Cafe7. Outdoor Structures8. Managing StaffEach section has 3 different levels:Scottish Government Requirements mandatory. These are practices that havebeen imposed on the industry or havebecome commonly expected.Climbing wall adaptation - recommended. These practices have been adapted to thespecifics of the climbing wall environmentand are practices that you should seriouslyconsider. If you decide not to comply, werecommend that you complete a full riskassessment.Other practices for consideration. These are practices that have been identifiedthrough our work that may help withcustomer perception or management but theevidence for them helping to stop virustransmission is weak or mixed. Our Procedures set out minimumrequirements. You should comply withthe Mandatory Requirements but you arewelcome to enhance these in ways that fityour business. These Procedures are compliant withthe Scottish Government Guidelines issuedfor the reopening of the indoor leisure sectoron 31st August. You should ensure that youread the Government Guidelines and ensurethat you are complying with them.If you employ 50 people or more, you havean obligation to put the results of yourCovid-19 Risk Assessment on your website. The government guidance also encouragesall businesses to publish this info, regardlessof size.It should be recognised that whilst climbingwalls will take all reasonable steps to preventthe transfer of CV to its staff and customers, there will always be a risk that an infectedperson visits the centre and either throughdroplet transfer, aerosol action or smearinfection, transfers the virus to others. Ourcustomers should be made aware of this andmake their own decision given their specificcircumstances whether this small residualrisk is one they are willing to take. Theresidual risk should be no greater than inmany other public spaces and facilities thatare already open or will re-open in thecoming months.9

ABC GUIDEL INES FOR REOPENING DURING PHYSICAL DIS TANCING11HYGIENESCOTTISH GOVERNMENT REQUIREMENTSSanitising (either through gels or sinksand soap) to be provided and requiredof customers before or as they enter thecentre. Sanitiser to be available so thatcustomers hands are sanitised before theyare able to touch anything within the centre.Gym equipmentWhere a wall has gym equipment, thereshould be sanitising spray and disposablecloths available for customers to cleanmachines and bars themselves. Postersshould state the requirement of cleaningbefore and after use.Be aware that some people are allergic tohand sanitiser so you will need to makealternative arrangements for them.Regular cleaning scheduleYou should continue with a complete andfrequent cleaning schedule.Government AdviceCleaning if a Covid-19 casehas been in your facilityIf you are notified that a confirmedCovid-19 case has been in your centre, youshould follow government advice on howto disinfect the area. At this stage, thisinvolves cleaning the area well following thegovernment advice. Should that change wewill update this section.Hand sanitiser or soap wash at entranceScientific ArticleHand sanitiser at exitYou are required to enable customers tosanitise their hands as they leave the centre.Hand sanitisation should be placed as nearto the exit as possible.Hand sanitiser in centreWalls should have strategically placedsanitiser around the centre. This shouldbe outside and inside all doors and shouldencourage climbers to sanitise their handsbefore going into and as they leave theclimbing area. You should also ensure thatyou have sufficient signage encouragingclimbers to sanitise their hands regularly, throughout their session.Cleaning frequent touch pointsYou should identify points in your centrethat are touched frequently. These might beiPads, door handles, taps, keyboards, cardpayment machines etc. Your staff will needto clean these with alcohol or disinfectantwipes frequently throughout the day.Government AdviceEnsure you have appropriate PPE forcleaning staffStaff should continue to use any PPE requiredas per local policies (business as usual). If arisk assessment of the setting indicates that ahigher level of contamination may be present(for example, where unwell individuals haveslept such as a hotel room or boarding schooldormitory) or there is visible contaminationwith body fluids, then the need for additionalPPE such as an apron and gloves should beconsidered.Health Protection Scotland

ABC GUIDEL INES FOR REOPENING DURING PHYSICAL DIS TANCINGInformation displayThe ABC has produced downloadableposters on customer hygiene. These reflectPublic Health requirements. You shoulddisplay these at critical points in your centreand you should educate customers via yourwebsite and social media. The ABC is also inthe process of animating these posters foruse on your social media.Hold CleaningIf you plan to clean holds with a pressurewasher, the holds should be quarantined for3 days before they are washed. This is notnecessary if they are cleaned first in acid.Showers and changing roomsShowers and changing facilities shouldremain closed where possible. Climbersshould be encouraged to arrive ready toclimb and to shower when they get home.ToiletsSee Scottish Goverment guidance onopening of public and customer toiletsduring the coronavirus pandemic.Ropes, harnesses etcYou should ensure that hand sanitiser isavailable for customers to use both beforeand after renting any equipment.Rental equipment should be wiped down orsprayed following use with an appropriateand safe liquid. Manufacturers haveprovided advice on this.PPE for cleanersCleaners should be provided withappropriate PPE.Government AdviceMusicMusic played in the centre must not be at avolume that requires customers to shout.Shouting increases the risk of droplettransmission.Drinking fountainsThese should be closed off until futher notice12Ventilation Evidence continues to suggest that, inpoorly ventilated indoor spaces, airborneaerosols are a possible transmission route.Ventilation is an important part ofmitigating against the transmission ofCoronavirus (COVID-19). Ventilation intothe building should be optimised to ensurea fresh air supply is provided to all areas ofthe facility and increased whereverpossible. Particular attention should begiven to spaces where high-intensityexercise activity takes place. Ventilationsystems should provide 100% fresh air andnot recirculate air from one space toanother if possible. Please refer to Section 4 in the CIBSECOVID-19 Ventilation guidance for moredetailed information Climbing walls will ensure appropriateventilation through either natural ormechanical means. They will use CO2monitors where necessary to ensureadequate air flow for both customers andstaff. Doors that can be fixed open should be.For fire doors that need to close you caninstall stops that will keep the door openbut will release, allowing it to close if thefire alarm sounds. Where possible doors and windows shouldbe opened 15 minutes prior to opening tocirculate the air in the facilitySport Scotland advice

ABC GUIDEL INES FOR REOPENING DURING PHYSICAL DIS TANCING13CLIMBING WALL ADAPTATION – RECOMMENDEDStaff rotaHire ShoesIt will be very difficult for staff to maintainsocial distance at all times. It is thereforelikely that if one member of staff is infected, anyone they have worked with will eitherneed testing or will have to be isolated. Youshould consider this when building yourreopening rota.Hire shoes should continue to be sanitised asnormal with disinfectant spray. Whilst thereis no evidence of virus transfer throughsweat, for confidence, staff completing thiswork should wear gloves. Hire shoes shouldbe sprayed outside as well as inside to avoidsmear infection.Route settingYou should consider asking your routesetters to wear masks. This is due to closeand regular contact with used holds and thechalk dust that comes off them.OTHER PRACTICES FOR CONSIDERATIONLiquid ChalkContactless paymentThere is a great deal of talk about the valueof liquid chalk. We do not believe that therewill be agreed proof that liquid chalk is anappropriate way to sanitise hands but wedo believe that it will be a useful back up forcustomers. We therefore recommend thatyou have liquid chalk available for sale asa back up to the hand sanitisation you arerequired to put in place.Whilst cash is not being banned, you couldconsider encouraging contactless payment. It is possible to upgrade your contactlesspayments to 45 maximum if this helps.Various manufacturers have liquid chalkproducts with above 70% alcohol content.Due to the way chalk is applied by aclimber (before not after a climb) it shouldnot replace hand washing/sanitising. If acustomer wishes to use liquid chalk the ABCcan find no evidence that it will increase anyrisk of COVID 19 transmission. Whether it willreduce transmission is still unproven.Gym Climber produced a good article on theefficacy of chalk.Cleaning equipmentYou may want to set a duration afterwhich you will clean equipment. Thereare guidelines available on how to do this, including the link here.Cleaning Options

ABC GUIDEL INES FOR REOPENING DURING PHYSICAL DIS TANCINGCAPACITYMANAGEMENTGOVERNMENT REQUIREMENTSManage capacity to facilitatephysical distancingClimbing walls must allow each personto have 9 square metres of space. This is toinclude the climbing area and all othercommon areas – circulation space, toilets, changing rooms etc.The maximum capacity in indoor sports facilitiesshould be based on the Scottish Governmentrequirement for physical distancing, and withconsideration given to the nature of the activitiesto be undertaken (i.e. if the activity is static ordynamic), the equipment layout and the overallventilation and configuration of the facility.By keeping your density down, you shouldalso be able to articulate that customersare able to be sufficiently distanced fromothers who may be working hard and hencebreathing hard.Managing your capacityIt is essential that you set your capacity andare able to manage it. You may choose todo this through a pre-booking system or bykeeping a count of the number of customersin the wall. Rock Gym Pro have produced awidget to allow you to have customers checkin and out and you can feed this data live toyour website.Distancing GuidanceYou should take account of the way thatcustomers move around the centre, anyparticular pinch points and of course thecustomers’ perception of how busy you are. It isprobably a good idea to start with a limitedcapacity and to allow this to increase ascustomer confidence returns and the virustransmission reduces.Wall capacities are likely to be a hot topic ofdebate and potential disagreement betweenstaff and customers. We advise members to erron the cautious side as regards capacities. Youshould be able to stand behind the statement:“we have calculated our capacities based onadvice from PHS and checked that withreasonable customer self- policing andcompromise, you can climb comfortably andsafely at our wall and remain 2m away fromothers.”Image courtesy of Andy Fleming14

ABC GUIDEL INES FOR REOPENING DURING PHYSICAL DIS TANCINGCLIMBING WALLADAPTATION –RECOMMENDEDManaging CapacityOnce the allowed customer density has beenset, we would encourage customers to selfpolice physical distancing rather than expectstaff to force strict adherence or through, forexample, closing off routes or blocs.ABC Posters can be used to encourage this.OTHER PRACTICES FORCONSIDERATIONUsing customer slotsSome walls are considering requiringcustomers to book time slots and to pay forthem in advance. Depending on your centre, this may be appropriate. You should considerhow you will manage crossovers as thesecould be pinch points for queuing. It will alsoallow your staff not to handle cash.RGPRGP Add onVertical LifeMembers onlyYou may wish to consider only allowingalready registered members to come intothe wall in the first few weeks. This couldallow you to manage capacity and to assessyour customer’s response to reopening. Itwill mean that you do not have to take thetime to register new members.Image courtesy of Andy Fleming15

ABC GUIDEL INES FOR REOPENING DURING PHYSICAL DIS TANCING16PHYSICAL DISTANCINGSCOTTISH GOVERNMENT REQUIREMENTS2m MarkingsYou should put 2m markings on the floor inand if necessary, outside your entrance toremind people of the need to maintainPhysical distancing guidelines. You may alsowant to put floor markings in place at otherpinch points in your building.Gym equipmentEquipment should be spaced to allow allcustomers to maintain 2m physical distanceat all times. If equipment can not be moved, pieces should be taped off to enable the 2mrule to be adhered to.Perspex screens to protect staffProtecting your staff from infection is botha significant duty and a business risk. Youshould complete a Covid 19 Risk Assessmentand if you are unable to guarantee thatreception staff will be kept at a 2m distancefrom customers, you should considera perspex screen or other method ofprotection.Face coverings for staff and customersFace coverings should be worn at all times bycustomers in your centres except when they areclimbing, using exercise equipment or seated inyour cafe with food or drink. This includes whilst on the boulder mats, andmoving around in circulation spaces. The usual medical exemptions apply.Staff should wear a face covering whilst servingcustomers and moving around the climbingarea or instructing/coaching.BelayingSome concern has been expressed aboutcommunicating whilst wearing a face coveringand belaying. We recommend that customersare encouraged to wear a face covering whilstbelaying but should test their capacity tocommunicate whilst doing so and make a finaldecision on the safety of this themselves. Forexample someone with a strong, deeper voicemay find communicating very straightforwardwhereas someone with less projection may findit appropriate to not wear a face covering.Face coverings should be replaced when bothclimbers are on the ground.Temperature checkingThis is not currently recommended byScottish government so is not recommendedby the ABC.Office staffScottish Government advice on physicaldistancing for office staff should be followed.First AidFull PPE should be available with each firstaid kit. This should include: Mask, glove andprotective glasses. If the first aider is going tohave to touch or get closer than 2m from theinjured party, they should don the PPE. If thefirst aider deems the situation too urgentthey should continue with administering firstaid and medical advice should be soughtafterwards.Used PPE should be disposed of in line withgovernment guidelines.Advice on CPR

ABC GUIDEL INES FOR REOPENING DURING PHYSICAL DIS TANCINGStaff moving and work stationsStaff should be set up to work at least 2mapart and this should be side to side or backto back. They should be encouraged to passeach other back to back or side to side. They should work on the same work stationfor the duration of their shift and this shouldbe cleaned down before someone elseuses it.Test and ProtectIn the event of an identified case in yourcentre, you will be asked for customer data –who attended on the same date at the sametime as the infected case. You must ensurethat you are able to produce this data andyou may want to inform your customers thatyou will be doing so.Latest guidance from Scottish Government onTest and Protect data collection.CLIMBING WALL ADAPTATION – RECOMMENDEDOne way system of entrance/exitIf at all possible you should considerseparating customers as they enter andexit the building. This does not have to bethrough a separate doorway but you candirect customers with tape on the floor orphysical boundaries. You should considerwhether any other one way routings arepossible in your centre and if possibleyou should introduce them and requirecustomers to follow them.Rescue at heightStaff performing rescues at height must havefull PPE available to them. This will include:protective glasses, mask and disposablegloves. If the rescue is going to involve closecontact and time permits, the rescuer shoulddon the equipment. If the rescuer deemsthe situation too urgent and is unable to donPPE, they should continue with the rescue.Following this, medical advice should besought.PPE should be disposed of in line withgovernment guidelines.GuidelinesFirst Responder GuidanceDisplay ABC Social Distancing posters TheABC has produced Physical Distancingposters to inform climbers of the need forand issues with social distancing in aclimbing wall.
