An important message on tobacco health from Dean Janie Heath:As you accept the challenge of advancing the health for others, we hope you will take the time to care foryourself as well. During your program of study, you will learn the importance of an evidence-based practice andhow to integrate it on a daily basis. For well over 20 years, my nursing research has been focused on tobaccocontrol and as you may know, Kentucky has the leading smoking prevalence rates in the country as well as theleading lung cancer prevalence rates. This drives my passion to make a difference and be a strong advocate forhealth promotion and disease prevention. We appreciate national and local efforts such as the University’s tobacco-free campus policy to make adifference in the lives of communities and individuals. UK College of Nursing is leading the way in tobaccocontrol research and practice through our Tobacco Policy Research Program and Kentucky Center for Smokefree Policy. Although we are concerned about all unhealthy behaviors, tobacco use and the dramatic upsurge inindustry marketing and electronic-cigarettes/Juul use is a top priority.More so than ever we have heightened our concerns about the dangerous effects of e-cigarettes and/or Juulingand hope you will remember there are FDA approved strategies to help individuals quit using tobacco. For thesake of your health and the health of others, we encourage you to be informed, be a non-tobacco user and helpothers become non-tobacco users as well.University Health Services: www.ukhealthcare.uky.edu/uhs is an excellent resource for your health andwellness needs, including help in quitting tobacco use. Other resources: www.uky.edu/TobaccoFree/ or follow us on Twitter: @UKTakeActionhttp://www.uky.edu/breathe/ or follow us on facebook and Twitter: @kysmokefree1-800-QUIT-NOW or www.tobaccofreenurses.orgTOBACCO FACTS – Did you know? As the 2012 Surgeon General's Report Preventing Tobacco Use Among Youth and Young Adultsillustrates, many lifestyle choices that lead to future health risk, including tobacco use, peak between 21and 25 years of age. The number of smokers who started after age 18 has recently increased from 600,000 (2002) to 1million (2010). This means ultimately up to 1 million current college students could die prematurelyfrom tobacco use. For adults, cigarette smoking accounts for one out of five preventable deaths annually in the UnitedStates. For all health care professionals tobacco use is a serious issue. In fact, tobacco use is the single mostpreventable cause of death. Moreover, nurses have the highest rate of smoking among all health care professionals. Nursingstudents smoke at rates that are four times higher than medical students. Many studies support the important difference that nurses can make with helping their patients’ quittobacco use. However, nurses who smoke may feel less confident and may be more reluctant to offerthese interventions to their patients.Page 3 of 44
