MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT: Greetings!The Board and I are looking forward to the running of the 137th MaberlyFair. As most of you will know we had a particularly troubled 2018. Our bankaccount was emptied without our knowledge. With a lot of work and helpfrom our community we managed to successfully put on the 136th fair. Socome and visit us on August 24th 2019 as we have something for everyone,horses, cows, sheep, poultry, and the World Famous zucchini race for the kidsand Musical entertainment for everyone. Lots of exhibits. Enter your plants,veggies or Grandma’s famous preserves. RULES AND REGULATIONSALL ENTRIES MUST BE GIVEN TO THE SECRETARYBEFORE FRIDAY, AUGUST 23rd1. An annual subscription of 5 or upwards shallconstitute the subscriber a member of the Society.2. None but members who have paid their subscriptionwill be allowed to compete for prizes.3. All entries should be made on printed forms, whichcan be obtained from the back of the fair book. Theseforms to be filled in and signed by exhibitor and sent tothe Secretary who will have entry tickets ready forexhibitor on arrival. (No entry tickets will be mailed.)4. Entries should be made in the order mentioned in thePrize List.5. Entries must be sent to the Secretary before Friday,August 23rd or e-mail toregistration@maberlyfair.ca.6. Any exhibitor moving his goods from the hall orgrounds before 4:30 p.m. on the day of the Fair willforfeit his prize money.7. Stock and all articles must be entered in the name ofthe bona fide owner; and unless this rule is observed,no premium will be awarded.8. Any article or animal can compete for a singlepremium unless a special premium is offered, and nopremium will be paid on animals or articles ofinferior merit although there be no competition. Thisrule not to apply to “Herds” in cattle and “Pens” insheep.9. Any person who shall knowingly violate the rules ofthe Society or who shall seek to obtain a premium byfalse pretenses or by improper interferences withJudges, shall forfeit any prize that may have beenawarded him.10. In classes of purebred stock, the name and number ofeach animal must accompany the entry, and in thecase of dispute, the certificate of registration must befurnished. No animal will be allowed to compete aspurebred unless they possess regular pedigree.11. All bulls to be exhibited must be properly securedand otherwise under the care of an attendant.12. All exhibits not having entry tickets will be ignoredby judges.13. Fruit, Grain and Vegetables must have been raisedby exhibitor during the present year.14. No person shall be allowed to enter for exhibitionmore than one specimen in any section of a class.(This rule does not apply to animals.)15. Animals shown as grades in Cattle classes must bethe progeny of purebred sire.16. As the object of the society in giving prizes forlivestock is to promote improvement in the breedingstock, the Judges, in making their awards, will beinstructed not to take into consideration the presentvalue to the butcher of the animal, but to decideaccording to their relative merits for the purposeof breeding.17. While the Directors will take precautions under thecircumstances to ensure the safety of the articles sent18.19.20.21.22.23.24.25.26.27.28.to the exhibition, owners themselves must take therisk of exhibiting them and should any articles beaccidentally injured, lost or stolen, the Directors willgive all assistance in their power towards therecovery of the same, but will not make any paymenton the value thereof.Should the funds of the Society be insufficient to paythe full amount of the prize awards, a certain percentwill be deducted.Judges will have the power of withholding thepremium when they consider the animal or articleundeserving of one.No horses or vehicle will be allowed to remain withinthe ring or on the track, except those being exhibited.Exhibitors should apply for space for exhibition toDirector in charge.No prize money will be paid on exhibits not havingproper entry ticket.Prizes not called for by the 15th of December, willbe placed to the credit of the Society.The Directors will avail themselves of the powersvested in them by section 116 of the AgriculturalAct respecting Gambling, etc.The MAS reserves the option to replace ANY prizemoney stated with a prize of roughly equivalentvalue.The Maberly Agricultural Society does not assumeany responsibility whatsoever for accidents whichmight occur during the Fair.IMPORTANT: ALL EXHIBITS MUST BE IN PLACE BY9:00 P.M. He was also the owner of the PerthDairy Queen for many years and as a single father raised a family ofthree sons and one daughter. Madeleine was the secretary for Maberly Agriculturalthe 28th of May 2019.His help was needed on a much higher plane.Society for 8 years. She also volunteered her baking for which ever cause was needed as wellas helping in the food booth. She was quite musical and often accompanied Herrick on thepiano while he played violin. She was an Honourary Director as well as a life time member ofthe Maberly Agricultural Society. May she rest easy in her saviour’s arms.7

Looking BackIN HONOUR OFHERRICK & MADELEINE McDONNELLHerrick McDonnell was one of six children born and raised on the farm on the WillisArmstrong Road, Zealand, Ontario. He was a very quiet man and from a musical family. Hehimself played and made violins. He was a farmer and operated a schoolbus for the Frontenac County School board for 37 years from 1949 to1986.Madeleine Kirkham grew up on the family farm on the Kingston Line,Maberly, ON. As an only child she was never lonely as her grandparentsand cousin also lived at the farm. She attended the Buchan School, a oneroom school house a few miles from her home. Madeleine played guitarand sang at her school concerts and was known to tickle the ivories ofthe piano. She had a best friend, Georgina Ferguson, and the two were known as Toots andBoots.Madeleine and Herrick married on June 14th, 1944 and moved to Herrick’sgrandfather’s farm which was situated half way between their childhood homes.They had no children of their own but did a lot of entertaining in their home andmany a night the fiddle and piano music could be heard on the breeze. On June14th 1994 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.They received the Agricultural Service Diploma for merited service to agricultureon May 9th 1984. Madeleine also drove a school bus for 37 years and was thesecretary at the Sharbot Lake Health Centre. The McDonnell’s set a fine exampleof what volunteerism is all about in a smallcommunity. Herrick was a long time director ofthe Maberly Fair Board and Madeleine was thesecretary-treasurer from 1956 to 1964. Bothwere huge Maberly Fair supporters and could becounted on wherever help was needed whether it was in building or baking,working in the food booth or on the dance floor.Herrick on his tractorMadeleine donated antique cross cutsaw on the occasion of her 86th birthdayto the fair President Paul Pospisil8

Herrick and Madeleine also taught Gordon & Bev how to square dance. Sadaway on February 2nd, 1997 at the age of 75 years.In 1993 Herrick assisted in the building ofour new exhibithall haddespitehis failingand advancingage andMadeleineeventuallyto movefromhealthher hometo the SharbotLake SeniMadeleine made sure there was plenty of sweets and coffee.
