Blackwater Baptist ChurchPastor Lynn Hardaway6000 Blackwater Road, Virginia Beach VA 23457October Quarter 2019The Home GodWants for HisPresenceIt was perhaps the greatest opportunity ever; God toldMoses he wanted to come to his people and dwellright in the middle of their camp. He did not want tolive on the outskirts or in the suburbs, but in thecenter of where they were living. What preparations would a people need to make forGod to live in their midst? Would it be like gettingready for weekend guests or someone special comingto dinner? We feel compelled to make sure our homelooks as good as possible; we want to make a goodimpression and we want our guests to feel welcome.God anticipated the question and told Moses whatneeded to be in place for his coming. First, hewanted to be close to them, but there was theproblem of sin that created a breach between them. So, God provided Moses with instructions about thepractice of sacrificing; offering a covering for thepeople’s sins before a Holy God. Sin is serious stuff, not to be taken lightly, and the sacrifice ofunblemished animals was necessary to give thepeople a visual reminder of its consequences.Second, he wanted to stay close to them. Moseswas given the blueprints for the building of theTabernacle. It’s a big word for “tent;” a r: Linda Jordanplace of worship. God wanted to camp out right inthe middle of where they were camping. He wantedto be close to his people. He also wanted them to be close to each other, sohe declared a third thing to get ready for Hispresence; He gave them Ten Commandmentsconcerning relationships. The first fourcommandments focus on how we are to demonstrateour love to God. The last six have to do with how toshow love to other people. God’s desire was forpeople to come to know Him by seeing theserelationships of love. Our shared vision at Blackwater is, “More peoplefollowing Jesus together in His love.”Jesus emphasized loving each other in John 13:34: “Anew commandment I give to you, that you love oneanother. . . By this all men will know that you are mydisciples, if you have love for one another.”God gave the Israelites guidelines so that, when theysought to live by them, other nations would see themas different and know that they were God’s people.God gave us Jesus so that, when we live like him, others will know we are his people and will be drawnto experience the life we share together. This isanother “greatest opportunity ever;” this one is for us!
