First Baptist Church’s“Where CHRIST Is the Center”January 25, 2019February NewsletterFrom the Pastor Since February is the Valentine’s month, we will take the last three Sundays in Februaryto work through the first half of Tim and Kathy Keller’s DVD study on marriage, TheMeaning of Marriage, on February 9, 16, and 23. If you think you have heard the Kellername before, you are right. Tim Keller is the Pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church inNew York City and has written numerous books about the gospel and the Christian life.Tim and Kathy have been married for over 40 years. Sessions will start each Sunday at5pm.The first three sessions are entitled:Service: Marriage Isn’t about YouCovenant: Created to Make PromisesRoles: Loving through Mutual SubmissionHere’s Keller’s introduction to the series, and it shows us that such a study can help anycouple, whether they’ve been married a short time or a long time. I hope you will takeadvantage of this opportunityMost people come into marriage with a set of expectations. Sometimes verbalized butmost often not, these expectations create a grid you and your spouse will use toevaluate the happiness and overall quality of your marriage. Your culture andexperiences help to create, and to reinforce, these expectations. When these hopesare met, the façade of a happy life holds up. But inevitably the day will come whenmarried life will not live up to your expectations. Maybe it will be over somethingsmall or maybe it will be something weightier . In some form, reality will eventuallydisappoint your expectations for marriage. Because the future is unknown and thepossibilities are endless, no quick fix (a date night, a budget, etc.) will be thorough orspecific enough to help you through every circumstance. Marriages will need aconstant reorientation to the meaning of marriage.What if your marriage had a foundation that allowed it to flourish even, and maybeespecially in, the disappointing spaces of life? [Our goal] is to sharpen your vision forsuch a life-giving foundation for your marriage.
