UDDEHOLM ELMAX SUPERCLEANGeneralPropertiesUddeholm Elmax SuperClean is a high chromium-vanadium-molybdenum-alloyed steelwith the following characteristics: High wear resistance High compressive strength Corrosion resistant Very good dimensional stabilityPhysical dataHigh wear resistance is normally connected tolow corrosion resistance and vice versa. InUddeholm Elmax SuperClean it has howeverbeen able to achieve this unique combinationof properties by a powder-metallurgy-basedproduction.Uddeholm Elmax SuperClean offers apossibility to make long-life, low maintenancemoulds for the best overall moulding economy.Typicalanalysis %C1,7Si0,8Mn0,3Cr18,0Mo1,0DeliveryconditionSoft annealed approx. 280 BrinellColour codeBlue/blackV3,0ApplicationsNew types of engineering plastics, with highfiller contents, place greater demands on thetooling material, in terms of wear resistanceand corrosion resistance. Uddeholm ElmaxSuperClean has been specially developed forhigh-tech applications. These include productswithin the electronic industry such as connectors, plugs, switches, resistors, integratedcircuits, etc. Uddeholm Elmax SuperClean canalso be used in the food processing industryand for industrial and custom knives, where acombination of corrosion resistance and wearresistance is required.Hardened and tempered to 58 Rockwell C.TemperatureDensitykg/m3lbs/in.20 C(68 F)200 C(392 F)400 C(752 F)7 6000,2757 5600,2737 5000,271Modulus of elasticityN/mm2psi230 00033,4 x 106210 000200 00030,5 x 106 29,0 x 106Coefficient ofthermal expansionper C from 20 Cper F from 68 F––10,6 x 10-6 11,4 x 10-66,0 x 10-6 6,4 x 10-6Thermal conductivity*W/m CBtu in/ft2 h F––15104211464600,110––––Specific heatJ/kg CBtu/lb F* Thermal conductivity is difficult to measure. UDDEHOLM ELMAX SUPERCLEANHeat treatmentTemperingChoose the tempering temperature accordingto the hardness required by reference to thetempering graph. Temper twice with intermediate cooling to room temperature, thepreferred tempering temperature is 250 C(480 F) or higher. In exceptional cases, aminimum tempering temperature of 180 C(350 F) can be used for small simple insertsand parts where toughness is of less importance. Holding time at tempering temperatureminimum 2 hours.Soft annealingProtect the steel and heat through to 980 C(1800 F), holding time 2h. Then cool in furnace20 C (40 F)/h to 850 C (1560 F). Holdingtime 10h. Cool slowly to 750 C (1380 F).Then freely in air.Stress-relievingAfter rough machining the tool should beheated through to 650 C (1200 F), holdingtime 2 hours. Forced air/gas Fluidized bed or salt bath 200–550 C(390–1020 F), then cool in airNote: Avoid intricate shapes as there is a risk ofcracking.Note: In order to obtain optimum properties, the cooling rate should be as fast as is concomitant with acceptable distortion. Temperimmediately the tool reaches 50–70 C (120–160 F).Dimensional changesduring heat treatmentMachiningrecommendationsThe machining recommendations below are tobe considered as guiding values which must beadapted to existing local conditions.TurningILLUSTRATION OF THE EFFECT FROM AUSTENITIZING TEMPERATURE AND SUBZERO COOLINGCutting dataparametersThe test has been performed on sample size:40 x 40 x 40 mm (1,6 x 1,6 x 1,6 in.).%0,1500,125AfterhardeningFeed 50 C (1920 F)30 min1050 C (1920 F)30 ering: 230 C (440 F) 2h 2hRough turningCuttingspeed (vc)m/min.f.p.m.After hardeningand tempering0,100Turning 600,2–0,40,008–0,016Depthof cut (ap)mminch-60 C (-75 F)230 C (440 F) 2h 2h70–120230–395Turning withhigh speedsteelFine turning Fine ,008 –30,02–0,12K20, P10–P20C2, C7–C6Coated*carbideK15, P10C2, C7Coated*carbide–* Use a wear resistant Al2O3 coated carbide gradeSub-zero treatmentDrillingSub-zero treatment falls into the broad categories of cold treatment and cryogenic treatment.Parts requiring high dimensional stabilityshould be sub-zero treated, otherwise volumechanges may arise.Uddeholm Elmax SuperClean is commonlysub-zero treated between -150 C (-240 F) and-196 C (320 F) (cryo treatment), althoughoccasionally -40 C (-40 F) to -80 C (-112 F)(cold treatment) are used due to constraints ofthe sub-zero medium and equipment available. The first sub-zero treatment should becarried out directly after hardening and beforeany tempering without delay. When maximumdimensional stability is required further subzero treatments may be necessary betweenthe tempering operations. In this case it isimportant to always end with a tempering, asthe last operation.HIGH SPEED STEEL TWIST DRILLSDrill diametermminchCutting speed (vc)m/min.f.p.m.–5–3/165–10 3/16–3/810–15 3/8–5/815–20 3–39*33–39*33–39*mm/rFeed 0,014* For coated HSS drills vC 18–20 m/min.
