FOREWORDEach verse of the Holy Qur’an has a simple and obvious meaning whichcan be understood even on a first reading. In addition to this, each verseforms part of a unique integrated system of multiple channels containingnumerous meanings hidden below the surface. Via these channels, thesubject matter of any verse forms a continuous link with the precedingand following verses and chapter, like a multi-channel communicationsystem.In the light of the above two things become obvious:a. However meticulous and faithful a translation may be, it can only gopart of the way in helping to convey the meaning of a book somultifaceted and rich in meaning as the Holy Qur’an. Indeed it isimpossible to claim that any one translation of the Holy Qur’an issufficient to convey to the reader, the entire message contained in theoriginal text.b. It is even more difficult to choose some specimen verses of the HolyQur’an relating to a given subject and to consider them to be sufficientlyrepresentative. For instance, if a few verses of the sacred text are selectedto represent the economic system, as envisaged in the Holy Qur’an, thetask would become prohibitive because of the rich multifaceted nature ofthe Holy Qur’an, but also because the philosophy of the Islamiceconomic system can be induced from many verses of the Holy Qur’anwhich is not even directly related to the subject of economics.However, when we consider the fact that a large majority of the world'spopulation, who speak different languages and belonging to differentculture and ethnic groups are as yet deprived of having any access to thestudy of this most wonderful book; the urgency of this grave situationbecomes apparent.In view of the above, the world wide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community,(vii)

under the auspices of Khilafat-e- Ahmadiyya has launched the mostambitious and noble task of making complete rendering of the HolyQur’an into different languages of the world. With the grace of Allah thecomplete translations of the Holy Qur’an have already been renderedinto more than seventy languages by the Ahmadiyya MuslimCommunity.Any queries regarding the availability of the Holy Qur’an in variouslanguages should be directed to the publishers or to any AhmadiyyaMuslim Mission in any country of the world or visit www.alislam.org formore information.In addition to this, an attempt is being made to present the Holy Qur’an,at least in part, to the speakers of many other languages while thepreparation of a complete translation continues. It may be noted that the headings under which the text of the Holy Qur’anis being presented do not make a part of the text itself. As such they areshown as distinctly separate.The selection of the specimen verses presented in this volume was madeby Hadhrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad, Khilafatul Masih IV, who was theSupreme Head of the Worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community from1982 - 2003.The English translation of these verses has been taken from thetranslation done by Hadhrat Maulvi Sher Ali. However HadhratKhalifa-tul Masih IV later revised the translation of some of theseverses and so where such verses have been published in this edition, wehave used the revised translation with the permission of HadhratKhalifatul Masih V.We hope and pray that while this attempt will succeed in quenching someof the thirst for knowledge it will also generate a craving for learningmore. 1: ALLAH- GOD“Allah” is the name of the Supreme Being. In the Arabiclanguage, the word “Allah” is never used for any other thingor being. The names for God found in other languages are allattributive or descriptive and are often used in the plural, butthe word “Allah” is never used in the plural. In the absenceof a parallel word in the English language, the original name“Allah” has been retained throughout the translation.In the name of Allah, theGracious, the Merciful.All praise belongs to Allah,Lord of all the worlds,The Gracious, the Merciful,Master of the Day of Judgment.Thee alone do we worship andThee alone do we implore forhelp.Guide us in the right path.The path of those on whomThou hast bestowed Thyblessings, those who have notincurred Thy displeasure, andthose who have not goneastray.(Chapter 1:1-7)(1)

Whatever is in the heavens andthe earth glorifies Allah; and Heis the Mighty, the Wise.His is the kingdom of theheavens and the earth; He giveslife and He causes death; and Hehas power over all things.He is the First and the Last , andthe Manifest and the Hidden,and He knows all things fullwell.He it is Who created the heavensand the earth in six periods, thenHe settled Himself on theThrone. He knows what entersthe earth and what comes out ofit, and what comes down fromheaven and what goes up into it.And He is with you wheresoeveryou may be. And Allah sees allthat you do.His is the kingdom of theheavens and the earth; and toAllah are all affairs referred.He causes the night to pass intothe day and causes the day topass into the night; and Heknows full well all that is in thebreasts.(2)

Believe in Allah and HisMessenger, and spend in theway of Allah out of that towhich He has made you heirs.And those of you who believeand spend will have a greatreward.(Chapter 57:2-8)Whatever is in the heavens andwhatever is in the earthglorifies Allah; His is thekingdom and His the praise,and He has power over allthings.It is He Who has created you,then some of you becomedisbelievers and some of youbecome believers. And Allahsees what you do.He created the heavens and theearth with truth, and Hefashioned you and made yourshapes excellent, and to Him isthe ultimate return.He knows whatever is in theheavens and the earth, and Heknows what you conceal andwhat you disclose; and Allahknows full well all that is in thebreasts.(Chapter 64:2-5)(3)

Verily, it is Allah Who causes thegrain and the date-stones tosprout. He brings forth the livingfrom the dead, and He is theBringer forth of the dead fromthe living. That is Allah;wherefore, then, are you turnedback?He causes the break of day; andHe made the night for rest andthe sun and the moon forreckoning time. That is thedecree of the Mighty, the Wise.And He it is Who has made thestars for you that you may followthe right direction with their helpamid the deep darkness of theland and the sea. We haveexplained the Signs in detail fora people who possessknowledge.And He it is Who has producedyou from a single person andthere is for you a home and alodging. We have explained theSigns in detail for a people whounderstand.And it is He Who sends downwater from the cloud; and Webring forth therewith every kindof growth; then We bring forthwith that green foliage(4)

w h e r e f r o m We p r o d u c eclustered grain. And from thedate-palm, out of its sheaths,come forth bunches hanginglow. And We produce therewithgardens of grapes, and the oliveand the pomegranate–similarand dissimilar. Look at the fruitthereof when it bears fruit, andthe ripening thereof. Surely, inthis are Signs for a people whobelieve.And they hold the Jinn to bepartners with Allah, although Hecreated them; and they falselyascribe to Him sons anddaughters without anyknowledge. Holy is He andexalted far above what theyattribute to Him!(Chapter 6:96-101)Allah–there is no God but He,the Living, the Self-Subsistingand All-Sustaining. Slumberseizes Him not, nor sleep. To himbelongs whatsoever is in theheavens and whatsoever is in theearth. Who is he that willintercede with Him except byHis permission? He knows(5)

what is before them and what isbehind them; and theyencompass nothing of Hisknowledge except what Hepleases. His Throne extendsover the heavens and the earth;and the care of them burdensHim not; and He is the High, theGreat.(Chapter 2:256)He is Allah, and there is noneworthy of worship except Him,the Knower of the unseen andthe seen. He is the Gracious, theMerciful.He is Allah, and there is noneworthy of worship except Him,the Sovereign, the Holy One, theSource of Peace, the Bestower ofSecurity, the Protector, theMighty, the Subduer, the Exalted.Holy is Allah far above thatwhich they associate with Him.He is Allah the Creator, theMaker , the Fashioner. His arethe most beautiful names. Allthat is in the heavens and theearth glorifies Him, and He is theMighty, the Wise.(Chapter:59:23-25)(6)

ANGELSThe word has the literal meaning of a “message-bearer” or“agent”. This explains the object of the creation of angels. Theybring messages of God and execute His will in the universe.Thus angels are a part of the physical and the spiritual worlds.In the spiritual world the influence of the angels is direct andworks without any intervening agency. Disbelief in angelswould therefore mean shutting off the avenue through whichthe light of God comes to man.All praise belongs to Allah, theMaker of the heavens and theearth, Who employs the angelsas messengers, having wings,two, three, and four. He adds toHis creation whatever Hepleases; for Allah has powerover all things.(Chapter 35:2)Say: 'Whoever is an enemy toGabriel–for he it is who hascaused it to descend on thyheart by the command of Allah,which fulfils that whichprecedes it, and is a guidanceand glad tidings to thebelievers–'Whoever is an enemy to Allah,and His angels, and His(7)

Messengers, and Gabriel, andMichael, then surely, Allah is anenemy to such disbelievers.’(Chapter 2:98-99)It is not righteousness that youturn your faces to the East or theWest, but truly righteous is hewho believes in Allah and theLast Day and the Angels and theBook and the Prophets, andspends his money for love ofHim, on the kindered and theorphans and the needy and thewayfarer and those who ask forcharity, and for ransoming thecaptives; and who observesPrayer and pays the Zakat; andthose who fulfil their promisewhen they have made one , andthe patient in poverty andafflictions and the steadfast intime of war; it is these who haveproved truthful and it is thesewho are the God-fearing.(Chapter 2:178)This Messenger of Ours believesin that which has been revealedto him from his Lord, and so dothe believers: all of them believein Allah, and in His angels, andin His Books, and in HisMessengers.(Chapter 2:286)(8)

Allah chooses His Messengersfrom among angels, and fromamong men. Surely, Allah isAll-Hearing,All-Seeing.(Chapter 22:76)0 ye who believe! believe inAllah and His Messenger, and inthe Book which He has revealedto His Messenger, and the Bookwhich He revealed before it. Andwhoso disbelieves in Allah andHis angels, and His Books, andHis Messengers, and the LastDay, has surely strayed far away.(Chapter 4:137)(9)

THE HOLY OUR’ANThe Qur’an is the name given by God Himself to the bookrevealed to the Holy Prophet of Islam, containing the final lawfor mankind. The word “Qur’an” means a book which is meantto be read. The Qur’an is indeed the most widely read book inthe world. The word also means a book or message which ismeant to be conveyed and delivered to all peoples. The Qur’anis the only revealed book whose delivery or message isabsolutely unrestricted; for whereas all other books are meantfor specific times and specific peoples, the Qur’an is meant forall times and all peoples (34:29).Alif Lam Mim . (I am Allah, theAll-Knowing.)This is a perfect Book; there is nodoubt in it; it is a guidance for therighteous.(Chapter 2:2-3)That this is indeed a nobleQuran,In a well-preserved Book,(Chapter 56:78-79)Therein arecommandments.lasting( Chapter 98:4)(10)

Allah has sent down the bestMessage in the form of a Book,whose verses are mutuallysupporting and repeated indiverse forms at which do creepthe skins of those who fear theirLord; then their skins and theirhearts soften to theremembrance of Allah. Such isthe guidance of Allah; He guidestherewith whom He pleases.And he whom Allah adjudgesastray - he shall have no guide.(Chapter 39:24)Ha Mim. (The Praiseworthy, theLord of Honour.)By this perspicuous Book,We have made it a Qur’an inclear, eloquent language that youmay understand.And surely, it is safe with Us inthe Mother of the Book , exaltedand full of wisdom.(chapter 43:2-5)Verily, We offered the Trust tothe heavens and the earth andthe mountains, but theyrefused to bear it and were(11)

afraid of it. But the man bore it.Indeed, he was too cruel tohimself , unmindful of theconsequences.The result is that Allah willpunish hypocritical men andhypocritical women, andadolatrous men and adolatrouswomen; and Allah turns inmercy to believing men andbelieving women; and Allah isMost Forgiving, Merciful.(Chapter 33:73-74)Say, 'If mankind and the Jinngathered together to produce thelike of this Quran, they could notproduce the like thereof, eventhough they should help oneanother.And surely, We have set forth formankind in various ways allkinds of similitudes in thisQuran, but most men wouldreject everything but disbelief.(Chapter 17:89-90)Can he, then, who possesses aclear proof from his Lord, andto testify to whose truth awitness from Him shall followhim, and who was preceded by(12)

the Book of Moses, a guide anda mercy, be an imposter? Thosewho consider these mattersbelieve therein, and whoever ofthe opposing parties disbelievesin it, Fire shall be his promisedplace. So be not thou in doubtabout it. Surely, it is the truthfrom thy Lord; but most men donot believe.(Chapter 11:18)And this is a Book which Wehave revealed, full of blessings,to fulfil that which preceded it,and to enable thee to warn theMother of towns and thosearound her.(Chapter 6:93)This day have I perfected yourreligion for you and completedMy favour upon you and havechosen for you Islam as religion.(Chapter 5:4)And this is a Book which Wehave sent down; it is full ofblessings. So follow it, andguard against sin that you maybe shown mercy.(Chapter 6:156)(13)

And We are gradually revealingof the Qur’an that which is ahealing and a mercy to thebelievers; but it only adds to theloss of the wrongdoers.( Chapter 17:83)(14)

PROPHETSThe Holy Qur’an affirms that Allah has sent guidance to everypeople, it thus affirms the truth and righteousness of everyprophet. Prophets have been sent for particular peoples atparticular times in history to guide them to Allah. The HolyProphet of Islam was the last law-bearing prophet and themessage of Islam thus encompasses and supercedes all previousscriptures. Prophethood continues but only within Islamprophets now appear so as to reflect the light of the Holy Prophet,and do not bring a new law.The Holy Qur’an has described not only the positive aspect ofprophethood it also portrays the character of the oppositionraised against all prophets. Pharaoh is the Qur’anic symbol ofthe forces opposed to every prophet.Allah chooses His Messengersfrom among angels, and fromamong men. Surely, Allah isAll-Hearing,All-Seeing.(Chapter 22:76)And We did raise among everypeople a Messenger preaching:'Worship Allah and shun the EvilOne.' Then among them weresome whom Allah guided andamong them were some whobecame deserving of ruin. Sotravel through the earth, andsee what was the end of thosewho treated the Prophets asliars!(Chapter 16:37)(15)

And when thy Lord said to theangels, ‘1 am about to place avicegerent in the earth,’theysaid: 'Wilt Thou place thereinsuch as will cause disorder in it,and shed blood?–and we glorifyThee with Thy praise and extolThy holiness.’ He answered: ‘Iknow what you know not.’(Chapter 2:31)Surely, We have sent revelationto thee, as We sent revelation toNoah and the Prophets afterhim; and We sent revelation toAbraham and Ishmael andIsaac and Jacob and hischildren and to Jesus and Joband Jonah and Aaron andSolomon, and to David Wegave ‘Zabur’.And We sent some Messengerswhom We have alreadymentioned to thee and someMessengers whom We have notmentioned to thee – and Allahspoke to Moses particularly.(Chapter 4:164-165)And remember when his Lordtried Abraham with certaincommands, which he fulfilled.He said, 'I will make thee a(16)

Leader of men.' Abraham asked,'And from among myoffspring?' He said, 'Mycovenant does not embrace thetransgressors.'(Chapter 2:125)And verily, We gave Moses theBook and caused after himMessengers to follow in hisfootsteps; and to Jesus, son ofMary, We gave manifest Signs,and strengthened him with theSpirit of holiness. Will youthen, every time a Messengercomes to you with what youyourselves desire not, behavearrogantly and treat some asliars and slay others?(Chapter 2:88)And We brought the children ofIsrael across the sea, andPharaoh and his hosts pursuedthem with evil intent andenmity, till, when the calamityof drowning overtook him, hesaid, ' I beleive that there is noGod but He in Whom thechildren of Israel believe, and Iam of those who submit toHim.(17)

What! Now! while you havebeen disobedient before andwere of those who domischief.So this day We will save thee inthy body alone that thoumayest be a Sign to those whocome after thee. And surely,many of mankind are heedlessof Our Signs.(Chapter 10:91-93)And relate the story of Mary asmentioned in the Book. Whenshe withdrew from her peopleto a place to the east,And screened herself off fromthem, then We sent Our angel toher, and he appeared to her inthe form of a perfect man.She said, ‘I seek refuge with theGracious God from thee ifindeed thou dost fear Him.’He replied, ‘I am only aMessenger of thy Lord, that Imay bestow on thee a righteousson.’(18)

She said, ‘How can I have a sonwhen no man has touched me,neither have I been unchaste?’He replied, ‘Thus it is.’ But saysthy Lord, ‘It is easy for Me; andWe shall do so that We maymake him a Sign unto men, anda mercy from Us, and it is athing decreed.’So she conceived him, andwithdrew with him to a remoteplace.And the pains of childbirthdrove her to the trunk of a datepalm. She said, ‘0! Would that Ihad died before this and hadbecome a thing quiteforgotten!’Then he called her from beneathher, saying, “Grieve not. ThyLord has placed a rivulet belowthee;"And shake towards thyself thetrunk of the date palm; it willcause fresh ripe dates to fallupon thee.“So eat and drink, and cool thyeye. And if thou seest any man,say, ‘I have vowed a fast to the(19)

Gracious God; I will thereforenot speak this day to any humanbeing.”Then she brought him to herpeople, carrying him. Theysaid, '0 Mary, thou hast broughtforth a strange thing.‘0 sister of Aaron, thy father wasnot a wicked man nor was thymother an unchaste woman!’Then she pointed to him. Theysaid, ‘How can we talk to onewho is a child in the cradle?’He said, ‘1 am a servant ofAllah. He has given me theBook, and made me a Prophet;‘And He has made me blessedwheresoever I may be, and hasenjoined upon me prayer andalmsgiving so long as I live;'And He has made me dutifultoward my mother, and He hasnot made me haughty andunblessed.‘And peace was on me the day 1was born, and peace there willbe on me the day I shall die andthe day I shall be raised up tolife again.(20)

Such was Jesus, son of Mary.This is a statement of the truthabout which they doubt.(Chapter 19:17-35)And remember the time whenAllah took a covenant from thepeople through the Prophets,saying: ‘Whatever I give you ofthe Book and Wisdom and thenthere comes to you aMessenger, fulfilling that whichis with you, you shall believe inhim and help him.’ And He said;'Do you agree, and do youaccept the responsibility whichI lay upon you in this matter?’They said, ‘We agree; He said,‘Then bear witness, and I amwith you among the witnesses.’(Chapter 3:82)And remember when We tookfrom the Prophets theircovenant, and from thee, andfrom Noah, and Abraham, andMoses, and Jesus son of Mary,and We indeed took from them asolemn covenant;(Chapter 33:8)(21)

THE HOLY PROPHET OF ISLAMThe Prophet was born in Mecca in August 570 A.D. He wasgiven the name Muhammad, which means, the praised one.When the Prophet was over thirty years of age, love of Godbegan to possess him more and more. Revolting against thepolytheism and the many vices of the people of Mecca, hechose regularly to meditate at a cave two or three miles away.When he was forty years of age he received his first revelationout. In these, the first verses of the Qur’an (96:2-6) he wascommanded to proclaim the name of the One God, Who hasmade man and sowed the seed of His own love and that offellow man in his nature and it was foretold that the worldwould be taught all kind of knowledge through the pen. Theseverses constitute an epitome of the Qur’an.0 Prophet, truly We have sentthee as Witness, and Bearer ofglad tidings, and a Warner,And as a Summoner to Allah byHis command, and as a radiantLamp.And announce to the believersthe glad tidings that they willhave great bounty fromAllah.(Chapter 33:46-48)Say, '0 mankind! truly I am aMessenger to you all from Allahto Whom belongs the Kingdom(22)

of the heavens and the earth.There is no God but He. Hegives life, and He causes death.So believe in Allah and HisMessenger, the Prophet, theImmaculate one, who believesin Allah and His words; andfollow him that you may berightly guided.'(Chapter 7:159)And We have not sent thee butas a bearer of glad tidings and aWarner, for all mankind, butmost men know not.(Chapter 34:29)And for thee, most surely, thereis an unending reward.And thou dost surely possesshigh moral excellences.(Chapter 68:4-5)Muhammad is not the father ofany of your men, but he is theMessenger of Allah and the Sealof the Prophets; and Allah hasfull knowledge of all things.(Chapter 33:41)22. Verily you have in theProphet of Allah an excellentmodel, for him who fears Allah(23)

and the Last Day and whoremembersAllah much.(Chapter 33:22)Allah and His angels sendblessings on the Prophet. 0 yewho believe! you also shouldinvoke blessings on him andsalute him with the salutation ofpeace.(Chapter 33:57)Muhammad is the Messenger ofAllah. And those who are withhim are firm against the nonbelievers, tender amongthemselves. Thou seest thembowing and prostratingthemselves in prayer, seekinggrace from Allah and Hispleasure. Their mark is upontheir faces, being the traces ofprostrations. This is theirdescription in the Torah. Andtheir description in the Gospel islike unto a seed-produce thatsends forth its sprout, thenmakes it strong; it then becomesthick, and stands firm on itsstem, delighting the sowers–thatHe may cause the disbelievers toburn with rage at the sight ofthem. Allah has promised, untothose of them who believe anddo good works, forgiveness anda great reward.(Chapter 48:30)(24)

Say, ‘If you love Allah, followme: then will Allah love youand forgive you your faults.And Allah is Most Forgiving,Merciful.’Say, ‘Obey Allah andMessenger;’ but if theyaway, then rememberAllah loves notdisbelievers.theturnthatthe(Chapter 3:32-33)0 Messenger! convey to thepeople what has been revealedto thee from thy Lord; and ifthou do it not, thou hast notconveyed His message at all.And Allah will protect theefrom men. Surely, Allah guidesnot the disbelieving people.(Chapter 5:68)(25)

WORSHIPPrayer is the second of the five pillars of Islam, the first beingbelief in the unity of God. Prayer is the most potent means ofestablishing and strengthening one’s communion with one’sMaker and of drawing near to Him. It is a dynamicphenomenon, God hears and responds to prayer. The Islamicconcept of prayer is a direct and uninhibited pouring forth of thesoul by the supplicant before the Divine Majesty in certainty ofAllah’s grace, mercy and power. In worship there is no need ofan intermediary between man and his Maker.And they were not commandedbut to serve Allah, being sincereto Him in obedience, and beingupright, and to observe Prayer,and pay the Zakat. And that isthe religion of the people of theright path.(Chapter 98:6)And I have not created the Jinnand the men but that they mayworship Me. (Chapter 51:57)Observe Prayer at the decliningand paling of the sun on to thedarkness of the night, and therecitation of the Qur’an inPrayer at dawn, Verily, therecitation of the Qur’an at dawnis specially acceptable to God.(26)

FASTINGIn the Holy Qur’an fasting has been prescribed from dawn tosunset in the lunar month of Ramadhan. It is a discipline whichpromotes righteousness and makes it easier for a seeker to scalespiritual heights. One who is fasting becomes aware of allDivine bounties, and fasting thus helps one to employ thembeneficently.0 ye who believe! fasting isprescribed for you, as it wasprescribed for those before you,so that you may becomerighteous.The prescribed fasting is for afixed number of days, butwhoso among you is sick or ison a journey shall fast the samenumber of other days; and forthose who are able to fast onlywith great difficulty is anexpiation–the feeding of a poorman. And whoso performs agood work with willingobedience, it is better for him.And fasting is good for you, ifyou only knew.(Chapter 2:184-185)(28)

SPENDING IN THE WAY OF ALLAHThe capital levy prescribed in the Holy Qur’an denotes itspurpose by its very name Zakat. The word means that whichpurifies and fosters. By subtracting the share of the communityfrom all wealth, the rest is purified for those entitled to make useof it; and by the application of the proceeds to the service of thecommunity, the welfare of the community is fostered. Zakat is thethird pillar of Islam and it thus reflects the importance in Islam ofone's fellow beings.And observe Prayer and pay theZakat, and bow down withthose who bow.(Chapter 2:44)So give to the kinsman his due,and to the needy, and to thewayfarer. That is best for thosewho seek the favour of Allah,and it is they who will prosper.(Chapter 30:39)And in their wealth is a sharebelonging to the beggar anddestitute.(Chapter 51:20)And those in whose wealththere is recognized right. Forthe beggar and destitute whobegs not.(Chapter 70:25-26)(29)

The alms are only for the poorand the needy, and for thoseemployed in connectiontherewith, and for those whosehearts are to be reconciled, andfor the freeing of slaves, andfor those in debt, and for thecause of Allah, and for thewayfarer – an ordinance fromAllah. And Allah isAll-knowing, Wise.(Chapter 9:60)0 ye who believe! spend out ofwhat We have bestowed on youbefore the day comes whereinthere shall be no buying andselling, nor friendship, norintercession; and it is those whodisbelieve that do wrong tothemselves.(Chapter 2:255)The similitude of those whospend their wealth for the causeof Allah is like the similitude ofa grain of corn which growsseven ears, in each ear ahundred grains. And Allahmultiplies it further forwhomsoever He pleases; andAllah is Bountiful, AllKnowing.(30)

They who spend their wealthfor the cause of Allah, thenfollow not up what they havespent with taunt or injury, forthem is their reward with theirLord, and they shall have nofear, nor shall they grieve.(Chapter 2: 262-263)And the case of those whospend their wealth to seek thepleasure of Allah and tostrengthen their souls is like thecase of a garden on elevatedground. Heavy rain falls on it sothat it brings forth its fruittwofold. And if heavy rain doesnot fall on it, then light rainsuffices.
