A Place to Call HomeCatholic Church ofSaint HenryOctober 24, 202130th Sunday in Ordinary TimeWelcome John Rumpza our newteaching Parish seminarian. Pleaseread his vocation story below. My Path to the SeminaryBy John RumpzaLife is full of surprises. Growing up,my little brother loved going to church– as a toddler, he would raise hissippy cup and mumble baby wordsduring the consecration. Naturally, my family imagined himas the future priest of our family. Meanwhile I was on theother side of the pew, bored out of my mind! I was muchmore concerned about sports and about getting to know theyoung ladies in my class. I chuckle to remember this. Mybrother is now happily married with kids, and here I am onthe path to priesthood.Readings for the weekSunday: Jer 31:7-9/Ps 126:1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 6 [3]/Heb 5:1-6/Mk 10:46-52Monday: Rom 8:12-17/Ps68:2 and 4, 6-7ab, 20-21[21a]/Lk 13:10-17Tuesday: Rom 8:18-25/Ps126:1b-2ab, 2cd-3, 4-5, 6[3a]/Lk 13:18-21Wednesday: Rom 8:26-30/Ps 13:4-5, 6 [6a]/Lk 13:22-30Thursday: Eph 2:19-22/Ps19:2-3, 4-5 [5a]/Lk 6:12-16Friday: Rom 9:1-5/Ps147:12-13, 14-15, 19-20/Lk14:1-6Saturday: Rom 11:1-2a, 1112, 25-29/Ps 94:12-13a, 1415, 17-18 [14a]/Lk 14:1, 7-11Next Sunday: Dt 6:2-6/Ps18:2-3, 3-4, 47, 51 [2]/Heb7:23-28/Mk 12:28b-34Upcoming Events:l All Saints/All Souls’Mass Timesl Box of Joyl CCW HolidayBoutiquel KC Turkey BingoInside this Bulletin:l Franciscan Retreatl Garden Groupl Last Week for Synodsmall groupsl Time, Talent andTreasureThe way God called truly did surprise me. However, theseed of this priestly calling was planted long ago in 4thgrade, when my humble father took me aside one day, explaining it was time to begin discerning my vocation. Heencouraged me simply to ask God what He wanted me todo with my life and to listen. He told me that God’sresponse might not be audible or immediate, but wouldcome as a growing desire and peace in my heart over theyears as I continued to ask. Dad instilled in me a simpletrust that I would be happiest seeking God’s plan, even if itwas surprising. I didn’t sense a call or a desire for thepriesthood, but simply kept this question open as I grew. The surprise of the calling is encapsulated in 3 particularinstances. The first surprise was after college, when Ibecame profoundly unfulfilled in the workforce, even inpositions where I should have excelled. I had the kind ofbusiness career I had always wanted, but it seemed like themore I tried to succeed and press forward, the more mygoals slipped out of reach. I also was dating during thistime, looking towards a future with wife and family. But I raninto a similar block here. Things would begin wonderfully, but the closer we got, the more my heart would begin tofeel restless and uneasy. I was asking myself why wasnothing working out?The second big surprise happened in 2015. I had moved toSan Diego for work, and soon after experienced acorporate restructuring which eliminated my position. I wasnow frustrated and discouraged, but couldn’t forget mydad’s words from 4th grade. I began praying and searchingall the more. Little did I know, the searching itself waschanging me and preparing me, and after some months,Continue Reading on Page 3

Continued from Front Coverthere was a moment of piercing clarity, where, to myamazement, I understood that God was calling me to be apriest! (there’s another full story behind this part.)I was very surprised, and a bit nervous – it would meangiving up my dreams of a career and marriage. I was alsoworried that the life would prove too difficult. But, thanksagain to that 4th grade conversation with dad, I decided togive God everything. I took a deep breath, said “Jesus, Itrust in you,” and applied to the seminary. And this was when the third big surprise came: From dayone of seminary, I experienced an entirely new kind ofpeace. A new creativity and joy began flowing out of myheart. Painful difficulties became treasured opportunities forGod to bring increased healing and joy. My deepest fearsand heartaches were no longer something to hide, butsomething to pour out to Jesus, where I began receivingHis strength and courage to overcome them. Life waschanging and deepening, and through all the trials and joys,it was becoming a rich adventure!Even though I had always trusted my dad’s words, it stillsurprised me to find that in giving up what I thought Iwanted most to follow what God wanted for me, I am morebursting with life and joy, more myself than I could haveever imagined. So my encouragement is this: Give God permission to be apart of every aspect of your life. This adventure will cost youeverything, but you will receive incomparably more inreturn!God Bless, John RumpzaKnights of ColumbusKnight of Columbus OutreachBox of Joy is an annual Christmas gift ministry organized bylocal Catholic schools, parishes and groups across theUnited States and facilitated by Cross Catholic Outreach. This month the Knights of Columbus will be participating inthe Box of Joy ministry.
