1Children’sPlay AreaABOUT THE GARDENSThis 5.4 acre park has a layered soil system thatbalances seismic shifting, collects and filters stormwater, and irrigates the gardens. Additionally, the soilbuild-up and dense planting help offset the urbanheat island effect by lowering the air temperature. The gardens showcase the wide variety of plantsthat grow in California's Mediterranean climate aswell as the diversity of plants from several of theworld's other Mediterranean climate zones. Each ofthose areas, from Mediterranean Europe to westernAustralia, is featured in its own location in the park. The park's different gardens allow visitors to alsoappreciate the climatic conditions and environmentsfrom drought to fog, desert to forest that exist inCalifornia. The park and all plantings were designed by PWPLandscape Architecture (Peter Walker & Partners).AustralianGardenThe botanist aboard the Endeavor, Sir JosephBanks, is credited with introducing many plantsfrom Australia to the western world, and manyplants today bear his name.Native to eastern Australia, Grass Trees may growonly 3 feet in 100 years, and mature plants can becenturies old.TREESKURRAJONGBrachychiton PopulneusNARROW-LEAVED BOTTLE TREEBrachychiton RupestrisFLAME BOTTLETREEBrachychiton AcerifoliusLACEBARK TREEBrachychiton DiscolorWHITE CHAMPACAMichelia Champaca AlbaPLANTSHAIRY WATTLEAcacia VestitaCORAL DRIFT FLAME BUSHAdenanthos Cuneatus 'Coral Drift'WOOLLYBUSHAdenanthos ‘Silver Haze’BLUE HIBISCUSAlyogyne HuegeliiRED KANGAROO PAWAnigozanthos 'Big Red’Pictured: Echium Candicans
