conversion, replacing hate with love, and fear with trust inthe gifts of God.Deacon Joe VannucciHolyFamily ParishMeredithFraschiJohn is pointing the way to the only person that completelydeserves trust and loyalty, love and devotion- and that isJesus Christ. My Dear Fellow Parishioners,He rules not with oppression and tyranny, arrogance andgreed, but with peace and justice, and love and mercy.FFromrom the the DeskDeskOf . Of . I want to begin today by asking a question. Who was the28th President of the United States? If you’re like me, youdon’t know. We could look it up, but off hand we don’tremember. Think about that for a moment. This was a man who was once the leader of the mostpowerful nation on earth, and we can’t recall his name! (Itwas Woodrow Wilson.)John tells us that every valley will be filled, and everymountain and hill made low. Is he talking about our spirituallives, and how will that come about? The answer is throughthe mercy of God given through Jesus. We can use the works of mercy, spiritual and physical waysof caring for others, such as feeding the hungry, counselingthe doubtful, clothing the naked, and sheltering theWe see this in our Gospel reading today, when we hearhomeless to, as one man put it, “fill in the valleys of empty, about the earthly rulers of apostolic times-Caesar, Pilate, wounded souls” and remove the “obstacles to healing andHerod and Philip, Lysanias, and the high priests Annas and wholeness.”Caiphas-these powerful men respected and honored andfeared in their times, but whose kingdoms no longer exist. So by listening to the words of John the Baptist this Advent, let us prepare the way of the Lord by repenting of our sinsYou might think that if God were going to reveal hisin Reconciliation, by meditating ever more deeply on hispresence in the world just then, he would make it known to real presence in Scripture and the Eucharist, and by beingone of these powerful men.compassionate to our brothers and sisters. But God thinks differently. His Word instead comes to aThen we too, like John, will be called prophets of the Mostcamel-skinned loner named John, living on locusts andHigh by our Baptism, and many more will be led tohoney in the desert.salvation. Come, Lord Jesus!I am reminded of the words of Mary’s Magnificat, “Youhave cast down the mighty from their thrones, and havelifted up the lowly.”Your brother in Christ, Deacon Joe PARISH SURVEYBut as his father Zechariah correctly predicted, John, scraggly though he was, would be called the “Prophet of theMost High,” preparing people for salvation by theforgiveness of their sins. This new leader that John is announcing to the people isnot an earthly king or emperor or dictator-his kingdom willbe a spiritual one. Thanks to those who completed theParish Survey in November. Wereceived great feedback on ourparish. Most responses to thequestions were very good and therewere several who gave helpful critical feedback.Nevertheless, the number of surveys completed wasnot statistically substantial for our parish size. Therefore, we have reopened the survey and willcontinue to encourage survey completion over theholidays until January 15.The people of that time probably thought that a change intheir earthly leadership would make things better, as manydo today. But instead of improvement, they always seemedto get more of the same-greedy and self-serving rulers whoreally didn’t care about them, or at best simply ignored theirproblems. They put their trust in the wrong place. As a reminder, if you completed a survey, please take aholy family medal as a gift for your time and effort. Thelink to the online survey is open again and can befound at: https://holyfamilypgh.org/parish-survey. Wewill have more paper copies of the survey at churchentrances soon.He tells the Jewish people, and us, to prepare the way ofthe Lord. Have we perhaps lost our way, and wandered offin search of something missing in our lives, not exactly surewhat it is?They (and we) may not so much need a change ofgovernment leadership as we need a change of heart, aThank you for your continued support of our parish!2

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENTREADING Iprayer: that your love may increase ever more and more inknowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is ofvalue, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day ofChrist, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comesthrough Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.BAR 5:1-9Jerusalem, take off your robe of mourning and misery; put onthe splendor of glory from God forever: wrapped in the cloak ofjustice from God, bear on your head the mitre that displays theglory of the eternal name. For God will show all the earth yoursplendor: you will be named by God forever the peace of justice, the glory of God’s worship.AlleluiaUp, Jerusalem! stand upon the heights; look to the east andsee your children gathered from the east and the west at the wordof the Holy One, rejoicing that they are remembered by God. Ledaway on foot by their enemies they left you: but God will bringthem back to you borne aloft in glory as on royal thrones. For Godhas commanded that every lofty mountain be made low, and thatthe age-old depths and gorges be filled to level ground, that Israelmay advance secure in the glory of God. The forests and everyfragrant kind of treehave overshadowed Israel at God’s command; for God isleading Israel in joy by the light of his glory, with his mercy andjustice for company.RESPONSORIAL PSALMPS 126:1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 6R. John went throughoutthe whole region of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of thewords of the prophet Isaiah: A voice of one crying out in thedesert: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall bemade low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and therough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation ofGod.”AMOR A LA IGLESIA (quinta parte)5.
