He said that itmust be ensured that Afghan soil is not used for terror activities.He attended the first in-person Quad summit on Sep 24 in Washington DC. He held talks with USPresident Joe Biden, US Vice President Kamala Harris and his counterpartsfrom Australia, Scott Morrison and from Japan, Yoshihide Suga. He also met topAmerican CEOs of five companies and invited them to step up their investmentsin the country.INDIA HOSTS 13th BRICS SUMMITAs part of India’s ongoing chairship ofBRICS in 2021, Prime Minister NarendraModi chaired the 13th BRICS Summit onSep 09 in virtual mode. The theme thatIndia has chosen for its leadership is –‘BRICS at 15 – Intra-BRICS Cooperation forcontinuity, consolidation and consensus’.Sanjay Bhattacharya, Secretary in theMinistry of External Affairs, was India’sSherpa for the Summit.BRICS is the grouping of five of the largest developing countries of the world -Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, formed in June 2006. Together theyrepresent 41 percent of the global population, 24 percent of the global GDP and16 percent of the global trade.3

INDIA FIRST TO LAUNCH A ‘PLASTIC PACT’The rankings for all colleges and universities across thecountry were based on teaching, learning, and resources;research and professional practice, graduation outcome;outreach and inclusivity; and peer perception.IMF ALLOCATES 12.57 BILLION SDR TO INDIAIndia became the first Asian country to launch on Sep 03a “Plastics Pact”. The India Plastics Pact, a joint initiativebetween the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) andWorld-Wide Fund for Nature-India (WWF India), aimsto bring together leading businesses at a national levelto make commitments for building a circular system forplastics. The Pact visualises a world where plastic isvalued and does not pollute the environment. The Pacttargets the businesses to move towards a circulareconomy for plastics by 2030.At the core of all Plastics Pacts lie four ambitious, timebound targets for reducing, and re-imagining plasticpackaging. The India Plastics Pact’s targets to beachieved by 2030 are:1. Define a list of unnecessary or problematic plasticpackaging and items and take measures to addressthem through redesign and innovation2. 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable orrecyclable3. 50% of plastic packaging to be effectively recycled4. 25% of all plastic packaging to be from recycledproduct5. India generates 9.46 MT of plastic waste annually, ofwhich 40% is not collected. About half of all plasticsproduced in the country are used in packaging, mostof it is single-use in nature.IIT MADRAS TOPS THE NIRF RANKINGSIIT Madras topped the NIRF rankings for the third timein a row, in the overall category. (approx USD 17.86 billion). With this, the totalSDR holding of India has gone upto SDR 13.66 billion(equivalent to around USD 19.41 billion). SDR in theRBI’s forex reserves was 1.54 billion as on August 20,2021. With the latest SDR allocation, India’s forexreserves are expected to cross 630 billion.The SDR is an international reserve asset, created by theIMF in 1969 to supplement its member countries’ officialreserves. To date, a total of SDR 660.7 billion (equivalentto about US 943 billion) have been allocated. The value ofthe SDR is based on a basket of five currencies—the U.S.dollar, the euro, the Chinese renminbi, the Japanese yen,and the British pound sterling.COIN IN HONOUR OF ISKCON FOUNDERA special commemorative coin of Rs 125 was releasedby the Prime Minister Modi on September 01 to markthe 125th birth anniversary of Srila BhaktivedantaSwami Prabhupada, founder ISKCON - InternationalSociety for Krishna Consciousness. He founded ISKCONin New York in July 1966, popularly known as the ‘HareKrishna Movement’. Its headquarters are in VillageMayapur in District Nadia, West Bengal, with 850temples all over the world9 JUDGES JOIN SUPREME COURTFor the first time in the history of Indian judiciary, ninenew judges, including three women judges, took oath inone go as Supreme Court judges on August 31. The oathof office and secrecy was administered by Chief Justiceof India, N V Ramana. The nine new judges are: JusticeAbhay Shreeniwas Oka, Justice Vikram Nath, JusticeJitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Justice Hima Kohli, JusticeB V Nagarathna, Justice C T Ravikumar, Justice M MSundresh, Justice Bela M Trivedi, Justice P S Narasimha.With the swearingin of the nine newjudges, the currentstrength of theSupreme Court hasincreased to 33,including the CJI,against the sanctioned strength of 34. A Collegium headed by the CJI andcomprising four other senior SC judges recommends thenames of senior judges or advocates to the President ofIndia for appointment of Supreme Court judges and heaccords the final approval. A Supreme Court Judge canserve till he/she attains age of 65 years.4

INDIA IMPROVES INNOVATION RANKINGIndia improved its ranking by two spots to 46th in theGlobal Innovation Index 2021 released by the WorldIntellectual Property Organization - WIPO. India hasbeen improving consistently its ranking in GII from 81stin 2015 to 46 in 2021. According to WIPO, theconsistent improvement in the GII ranking is owing tothe immense knowledge capital, the vibrant startupecosystem and the amazing work done by the public andthe private research organisations.Switzerland was ranked as the most innovative country,followed by Sweden and USA at second and third spot,respectively, among the 131 countries covered by theIndex.GII is the indicator for governments all over the world toassess the social and economic changes in their respectivecountries. The 80 indicators of GII explore a broad visionof innovation, including education, political environment,business sophistication, and infrastructure.Cushman & Wakefield is a Chicago based multinationalcommercial real estate services firm. The Indexassesses the most advantageous locations for globalmanufacturing among 47 countries in Europe, theAmericas and Asia Pacific. The countries are assessedbased on four key areas: Bounce Back: Projected ability to restartmanufacturing operations as vaccines are rolled outand business begins to return to normal Conditions: Business environment, including theavailability of talent / labor and access to markets Costs: Operating costs including labor, electricityand real estate Risks: Political, economic and environmental4 WETLANDS GET LISTED IN RAMSAR CONVENTIONFour Indian wetland sites have been recognised aswetlands of international importance under the RamsarConvention. Two of them are in Gujarat and two inHaryana. With this, the number of such sites in thecountry has risen to 46. The four selected sanctuariesare as under:AUGUSTINDIA MOST PREFERRED FOR MANUFACTURINGIndia has emerged as the second most sought aftermanufacturing destination across the world. Accordingto Cushman and Wakefield’s 2021 Global ManufacturingRisk Index, India has surpassed the US as the world’ssecond most desired manufacturing hub. The risingfocus on India can be attributed to India’s operatingconditions and cost competitiveness. Further, reforms toboth land and labor laws are critical to India’s success asa global manufacturing location. China continues to beat the top of the Index.GYANM GENERAL AWARENESS – NOVEMBER 2021Bhindawas Wildlife Sanctuary: Located near Jhajjar,Haryana, it is a human-made freshwater wetland. It isalso the largest in Haryana. Over 250 bird species usethe sanctuary throughout the year as a resting androosting site.Sultanpur National Park: It is also located in Haryananear Gurgram, it supports more than 220 species ofresident, winter migratory and local migratorywaterbirds at critical stages of their life cycles.Thol Lake Wildlife Sanctuary: Located nearAhmedabad in Gujarat, it lies on the Central AsianFlyway and more than 320 bird species can be foundhere. It is home to more than 30 threatened waterbirdspecies.Wadhvana Wetland: Also located in Gujarat, nearVadodara, it is internationally important for its birdlifeas it provides wintering ground to migratorywaterbirds, including over 80 species that migrate onthe Central Asian Flyway.The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty forthe conservation and prudent use of wetlands. It is namedafter the Iranian city of Ramsar, on the Caspian Sea,where the treaty was signed on February 2, 1971.5

INDIA’s 1st GREEN HYDROGEN ELECTROLYZERThe altitude of this road is higher than the base camps ofMount Everest as the South Base Camp in Nepal issituated at an altitude of 17,598 ft, while the North BaseCamp in Tibet is at 16,900 feet. Infrastructuredevelopment in such harsh and tough terrain is extremelychallenging. During the winter, the temperature dips to 40 degrees and the oxygen level at this altitude is almost50 per cent less than at normal places.INDIA CROSSED 100 GW RE TARGETIndia’s first green hydrogen electrolyzer manufacturingunit was started at Bengaluru, Karnataka on August 24.The factory set up by the US-based renewable energystartup Ohmium International will manufacture ProtonExchange Membrane (PEM) hydrogen electrolyzers.Green hydrogen is made from non-fossil sources asagainst blue hydrogen that is made from fossil sources. Itcan be used in industry as fuel and can be stored inexisting gas pipelines to power household appliances.To produce green hydrogen through any process, electrolysis isrequired. Electrolysis is the process used to split water intooxygen and hydrogen. An electrolyser is the system in whichelectrolysis is done, making it the most vital part in terms ofmaking hydrogen economically viable. Making green hydrogenin India will give a cost advantage for manufacturers ratherthan going for imports.India’s renewable energy (RE) capacity crossed themilestone of 100 gigawatts (GW), the government saidin a statement on August 12, informed the union powerand new and renewable energy minister Raj KumarSingh. Now India stands at 4th position in the world interms of installed RE capacity, 5th in solar, and 4th inwind in terms of installed capacity. India has alsoenhanced its ambition to install 450 GW of renewableenergy capacity by 2030.S C ALLOWS WOMEN TO APPEAR IN NDA EXAMFIRST COVID VACCINE FOR 12 APPROVEDThe Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation(CDSCO) has approved the DNA COVID-19 vaccineZyCoV-D developed by Ahmedabad-based Zydus Cadilafor children in the age group of 12 to 18 years. It isIndia’s first indigenously developed and world’s firstplasmid-DNA three-dose COVID-19 vaccine.The vaccine has efficacy of 66.6 percent and it is to bestored at 2 degree Celsius to 8 degree Celsius. The vaccineis needle free to be administered intradermally (throughskin) in three doses at day 0, 28 and 56.WORLD’s HIGHEST MOTORABLE ROADThe Border Roads Organisation (BRO) crossed anothersignificant milestone in the first week of August bycompleting the construction of the world’s highestmotorable tarmac road at the height of 19,300 feet atUmling La Pass in eastern Ladakh. The 52 km long roadnow connects the important towns in the Chumar sectorof Eastern Ladakh. It smashed the earlier record held bya road in Bolivia that ran at an altitude of 18,953 feet.The Supreme Court in a far-reaching judgement onAugust 18 allowed women candidates to appear forNational Defence Academy (NDA) entrance examscheduled on September 5, saying debarring themamounted to gender discrimination. It also directed theUnion Public Service Commission to issue anappropriate notification taking into account its orderand give it due publicity.The court wondered why the government was not moving aheadin this direction even after its 2020 verdicts extendingpermanent commission in the Army and Navy to women. It maybe noted that there are several modes of entry into the Army likeNDA, Indian Military Academy (IMA) and Officers TrainingAcademy (OTA) and currently, women can enter into the forceonly through OTA and IMA.OPERATION DEVI SHAKTI LAUNCHEDIndia’s complex mission to evacuate its citizens andAfghan partners from Kabul after its swift takeover bythe Taliban on August 15 has been named as “OperationDevi Shakti”. India began the complex evacuationmission by airlifting 40 Indians from Kabul to Delhi onAugust 16. GOVERNORS CAN PARDON DEATH SENTENCEThe Supreme Court of India in a landmark judgement onAugust 3, held that the Governor of state can pardonprisoners, (though on the aid and advice of the StateGovernment), including in the death sentence cases,under provisions of Article 161 of the Constitution.Governors can pardon the prisoners even before theyhave completed a minimum of 14 years of prisonsentence.The Court also observed that the Governor’s power topardon overrides a provision given under Section 433-A ofthe Code of Criminal Procedure, which mandates that thesentence of the prisoner can be remitted only after 14years of jail. The court said that Section 433-A of the Codecannot and does not affect the constitutional power of thePresident or Governor to grant pardon.HALDIBARI – CHILAHATI RAIL LINKThe first goods train carrying stone chips to Bangladeshthrough the revived Haldibari – Chilahati rail link leftfrom Damdim station of Alipurduar Division inNortheast Frontier Railway in West Bengal for Chilahatiin Bangladesh, on July 31. Haldibari — Chilahati routewill provide a shorter route for transit of goods intoBangladesh from Assam, West Bengal, Nepal andBhutan.Besides Haldibari-Chilahati route, four more rail routesconnect India and Bangladesh, namely dSinghabad-Rohanpur.INDIA GETS UNSC PRESIDENCY FOR AUGUSTOn August 01, India took over from France thepresidency of the United Nations Security Council(UNSC) for the month of August. This is the firstpresidency for India during its 2021-22 tenure as a nonpermanent member of the UNSC and eighth in total.India’s Permanent Representative/ Ambassador to UNO, TS Tirumurti informed that during presidency, India will beorganising three high-level signature meetings focussingon our priority areas—maritime security, peacekeeping,and counter-terrorism. India will also be organising asolemn event in memory of UN peacekeepers.GYANM GENERAL AWARENESS – NOVEMBER 2021INDIA FARES WELL IN ELDERLY CARERajasthan, Maharashtra, Bihar, Tamil Nadu and MadhyaPradesh are the top five older states in the “Quality ofLife for Elderly Index”, released by the EconomicAdvisory council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) onAugust 11. Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Chandigarhlead the rankings in the categories of relatively olderstates, northeastern states, and Union Territory,respectively.The index created by the Institute for Competitiveness, atthe request of EAC-PM, ranks states on the basis of state’sfinancial well-being, social well-being, health care system,and income security for the elderly in the state. As per theindex, older states refer to states with an elderlypopulation of more than 5 million, and relatively olderstates refer to states with an elderly population of lessthan 5 million.INDIA STANDS LOW IN YOUTH DEVELOPMENTThe Commonwealth Secretariat in London released theGlobal Youth Development Index 2020 for measuringthe condition of young people across 181 countries.India ranks 122nd in the world in terms of youthdevelopment. However, India is among the 5 fastestgrowing countries in the field of youth developmentbetween 2010 and 2018. The Index was topped bySingapore, followed by Slovenia, Norway. The Indexreveals that the conditions of young people haveimproved around the world by 3.1 per cent between2010 and 2018.The index ranks countriesbetween 1.00 (highest) to 0.00(lowest) and according to thedevelopmentsinyoutheducation, employment, health,equality and inclusion, peaceand security, and political andcivic participation. It looks at27 indicators including literacyand voting to showcase thestate of the world’s 1.8 billionpeople in the age group of 15 to29 years.NEWS FROM STATESSEPTEMBERNEW DELHI TOPS IN CCTV COVERAGEIn a report by Forbes India, New Delhi and Chennai haveranked first and third respectively from India on theworld’s most surveilled cities. New Delhi has 1,826cameras per square mile while Chennai has 609cameras per square mile. London ranked second mostsurveilled city in the world with 1,138 cameras persquare mile. Shenzhen, China ranked fourth with 520cameras per square mile.7

Statesand UTs are ranked on five parameters of food safety:Human resources and institutional data,Level of regulatory compliance,Food testing facility,Training and capacity buildingConsumer empowermentGOA FIRST STATE TO OFFER ‘FREE WATER’Haryana secured first position in installation of off-gridsolar pumps under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Surakshaevam Utthaan Mahabhiyaan (PM-KUSUM), as per thedata released by the Union Ministry of New andRenewable Energy. Haryana installed 14,418 pumpsagainst 15,000 sanctioned pumps for the year 2020-21.The centrally-sponsored PM-KUSUM scheme waslaunched in 2019 with a target to install 20 lakhstandalone solar pumps. Scheme is aimed at ensuringenergy security for farmers in India, along withhonouring India’s commitment to increase the share ofinstalled capacity of electric power from non-fossil-fuelsources to 40% by 2030.From September 1, 2021, Goa became the first state inIndia to supply water free of cost to its citizens forconsumption up to 16,000 litres per month under the‘Save Water to Get Free Water’ scheme. It is expectedthat 60 percent of households in Goa will get zero billsfrom September 1 onwards. Even the small businessesand restaurants will be transferred from the industrialto commercial segment for water billing, due to which,they also will be able to avail the benefit of this scheme.LADAKH GETS WORLD’s HIGHEST THEATREHP FIRST TO ACHIEVE COVID TARGETHimachal Pradesh has become the first state to achievea unique distinction of achieving cent percent target ofproviding first dose of Covid-19 vaccination to alleligible persons of 18 years and above.Among districts with a population of more than 10 lakh,Indore district in Madhya Pradesh became first toinoculate 100% eligible population with the first dose ofCovid19 vaccine.STATE FOOD SAFETY INDEX, 2020-21The food safety regulatory national body, Food Safetyand Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), released onSep 20, the third State Food Safety Index (SFSI) forevaluating food safety across all States/UTs in 2020-21.The states and UTs were classified into three categoriesto rank under the index: large states, small states andunion territories. The top three performers in therespective category were - Gujarat, Goa and J&K.The world’s highest movie theatre was inaugurated inthe Paldan area of Leh, at an altitude of 11,562 feet. It'sa mobile digital movie theatre with an inflatablestructure and can operate in -28 degree Celsius. Theinitiative was taken to bring the movie experience to theremotest areas of India. Bollywood superstar AkshayKumar's recently released 'Bell Bottom' was the firstmainstream film screened here.WORLD’s HIGHEST RADIO STATIONTwo high power transmitters were inaugurated at theworld's highest radio station at Humbatingla in Kargil,at an altitude of 13,300 feet from mean sea level.Transmitters of All India Radio FM radio station andDoordarshan will improve the transmission and thereach in the region especially in Kargil and Bataliksectors. Now the people in the mountainous regionwould get better quality services of AIR and DD.NAGA CUCUMBERS GET GI TAGThe juicy, soft and sweet cucumbers from Nagalandwere granted coveted GI Tag. They are growncompletely organically, throughout the state. 2 MORE BEACHES GET ‘BLUE FLAG’The GI status is an indication that identifies goods asproduced from a particular area which has special qualityattributable to its geographical origin.INDIA’s LARGEST OPEN-AIR FERNERYThe Environment Ministry informed on Sep 21 that twomore beaches in India have been awarded “Blue Flag”certification, an international eco-level tag, taking thetotal number of such beaches in the country to 10. Thetwo beaches to receive the certification this year areKovalam in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Eden inPuducherry. The certification is given by the Foundationfor Environment Education (FEE), Denmark. It also recertified the 8 beaches that were certified on October 6,2020.Blue Flag certification is a globally recognised eco-labelaccorded on the basis of 33 stringent criteria in fourmajor heads which are environmental education andinformation, bathing water quality, environmentalmanagement, and conservation and safety and services onthe beaches. The Blue Flag beach is an eco-tourism modelendeavouring to provide the visitors clean and hygienicbathing water, facilities, a safe and healthy environmentand sustainable development of the area.INDIA’s FIRST DUGONG RESERVEThe Tamil Nadu government declared on Sep 3 that 500sq.km of the biodiversity-rich waters in the Palk Bay, onthe southeast coast of Tamil Nadu, will be formed asIndia’s first Dugong conservation reserve.Dugong is a sea cow, which is an endangered marinemammal that is facing extinction due to water pollution,habitat loss and loss of seagrass. Presently, around 200Dugongs are believed to inhabit the marine regions ofTamil NaduStudies have revealed that the proposed conservationreserve supports several other globally important speciessuch as the highly-threatened whale sharks, sea horses,green and hawksbill sea turtles, and dolphins.GI TAG FOR CHILLI & ORANGE FROM MANIPURIndia’s largest open-air fernery was inaugurated onSeptember 12 in Uttarakhand’s Ranikhet. The fernery isspecial area designated for large number of fern species,some of which are endemic to the state. Some holdmedicinal value while some are threatened species thatdemand care and conservation. It is the country’s firstopen-air fernery in natural surroundings which is notunder any poly-house/ shade house. Otherwise,Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanical Garden andResearch Institute (TBGRI), Thiruvananthapuram is thelargest.Ferns are non-flowering pteridophytes. They generallyreproduce by producing spores. However, similar toflowering plants, ferns have roots, stems, and leaves.Ferns are the first plant with a fully developed vascularsystem. Ferns are important for the environment for theirornamental values. They have medicinal and ediblepurposes.THREE STATES GET NEW GOVERNORSPresident Ram Nath Kovind appointed former Lt. Gen.Gurmit Singh as the new Uttarakhand Governor onSeptember 9. Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohitwas appointed as the new Governor of Punjab. RetiredIPS Officer RN Ravi, Governor of Nagaland, has beenmade the new Tamil Nadu Governor. Governor ofAssam, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi will be discharging thefunctions of the Governor of Nagaland in addition to hisown duties until regular arrangements are made.INDIA’s TALLEST AIR PURIFICATION TOWERIndia’s tallest air purification tower was inaugurated inChandigarh on Sep 7. Standing 24 meter high, this is thehighest air purifier of India. It will cover around a 500metre radius around Transport Chowk, sector 26, a verybusy traffic crossing. It will clean 3.88 crore cubic ft ofair from the surrounding environment.The tower hasbeen installed on the initiative of Chandigarh PollutionControl Committee.Earlier, Delhi got its first-ever much-needed smog towerlast month. It is 20-meter-tall and was set up at BabaKharak Singh Marg in Connaught Place to combat risingair pollution in Delhi.The famous Sirarakhong Chilli (also called Hatheli chilli)and Tamenglong Orange from Manipur received theGeographical Index (GI) tag. TRIPARTITE PEACE ACCORD WITH KARBIS The ADB granted a 300 million loan as additionalfinancing to scale up improvement of ruralconnectivity in Maharashtra.AUGUSTCOUNTRY’s 1st SMOG TOWER STARTS IN DELHIIndia’s first ever smog tower was inaugurated on August23 in the national capital in Connaught Place area toimprove air quality. The smog tower will be able toimprove air quality in a radius of around one kilometer.The tower was built at the cost of 20 crore rupees.The Government of India has signed a tripartite peaceaccord on Sep 04 with the State government of Assamand five insurgent groups from the Karbi Anglongregion in Assam, to end decades of violence in theregion. The agreement aims to encourage the insurgentgroups to shun violence, lay down their arms and jointhe mainstream society and the government will help intheir rehabilitation and integration.It promises an investment of 1,000 crore by the Assamgovernment for development of the Karbi Anglong areain the next five years. It will grant greater autonomy tothe Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and provideprotection to the language, culture and identity of theregion and reservation to the Karbi people.
