Students will identifythe basic principles of disease transmission, pathology, and prevention. They will distinguish thecommon disorders of organ systems, and evaluate methods for their prevention and treatment.Students will discuss therapeutic nutrition options and the specialized care and hand-rearing oforphaned domestic small animals.VRT 105: Fundam entals of Anim al Nursing (Replaces VRT 102)3.0 units – 90 hoursStudents will learn the role of the veterinary technician and assistant in various occupational settings.They will discuss the legal and ethical responsibilities, as well as the communication skills needed foran office setting. Identification, behavior, care, and husbandry of domestic species will be studied usingproper medical terminology. Students will begin to perform safe animal capture, handling, and restrainttechniques as well as essential veterinary nursing skills.VRT330: Beginning Surgical Assisting (Replaces VRT 301 and VRT 306)5.0 units – 90 hoursIn this course students will demonstrate essential Veterinary Technician surgical team skills such asasepsis, sterilization, medical documentation, and surgical patient preparation. Components of ananesthetic machine and their functions, as well as anesthetic and analgesic drug classifications, patientmonitoring and endotracheal intubation will be discussed. Students will also apply surgical nursingskills from the beginning to end of the surgical process, completing all documentation, interacting withclients, using aseptic techniques, and practicing sterilization and sanitation of the operating suite.VRT 340: Advanced Surgical Procedures (Replaces VRT 310 and VRT 320)5.0 units – 90 hoursThis course focuses on advanced licensure procedures for the Veterinary Technician. These includeprinciples of anesthesia induction, advanced surgical nursing techniques, dental prophylaxis andextractions, suture techniques, bandaging, splinting, emergency and critical care. Students will also demonstrate competency of advanced veterinarytechnician skills with anesthetic induction, suture techniques and dental prophylaxis and extractiontechniques. Surgical assistance aptitude, critical care knowledge, and proper emergency responseprotocols will be performed and assessed.VRT 492: Externship (Replaces VRT 490 and VRT 491)5.0 units – 225 hoursThis course provides continued work experience in a clinical setting under direct supervision of aveterinarian or RVT associated with the college. Hours and sites will be arranged by the student andapproved by the veterinary faculty.
