Basic grammar tenses willbe reviewed. Students will learn the importance ofacademic skills such as time management, academicintegrity, and communication etiquette.F undamentals of Conversational English providespractice in basic listening and speaking andvocabulary enrichment as students are exposedto the attitudes, lifestyles, values, and themescommon in the United States. Activities include roleplaying, oral presentation, and basic video creation. READING 1 I n Reading 1, students will learn practical skillsfor developing reading comprehension, includingidentification of main ideas, use of prefixes andsuffixes, expansion of critical vocabulary, andbasic analysis of simple academic texts. Studentswill be presented with authentic materials such asmagazines, newspapers, and comics and engage invocabulary note-taking, journaling, and group work.L istening and Speaking 1 emphasizes thedevelopment of speaking skills and listeningcomprehension. This course focuses on toolssuch as basic interviewing practice, speechdevelopment, presentation, and improvisation toimprove students’ ability to clearly communicatebasic information in English. Topic areas includeAmerican broadcast media, authentic news, andentertainment interviews.W riting 1 promotes the development of basiccompetencies in written English. This coursefocuses on tools such as paragraph development,self- and peer-editing, audience awareness, andmind mapping to improve students’ ability tocommunicate basic information clearly in English.Topic areas include American literature andsongwriting. Students will also have theopportunity to create their own poems, songs,and simple short narratives.GRAMMAR 1 G rammar 1 expands student competencies in verbtenses, gerunds, regular and irregular verb use,common phrasal verbs, and prepositions. Special attention is given to introduction andpractice of basic note-taking skills, learning strategies,and the development of personal educational goals.WRITING 2 I n Writing 2, students will learn to write basic academiccompositions. Activities include blogwriting, academic essay development, and journaling, aswell as working with Full Sail’s Library and Writing Center.READING 4 LISTENING AND SPEAKING 3GRAMMAR 2 G rammar 4 further develops students’ capacities inEnglish grammar as they learn techniques for improvinglanguage fluency. This course covers topics such as gerundphrases, conditionals, and noun and adjective clauses whilesupporting student capacities in essential verb tenses andacademic vocabulary. Activities include poetry analysis,journaling, and multimedia presentations.GRAMMAR 3READING 2 I n Reading 3, students will acquire readingcomprehension skills by engaging the writing processand applying metacognitive reading strategies to highintermediate texts. Topics, assignments, and projectsare designed to develop self-aware and self-regulatedlearners. Grammar mini-lessons will also be includedand tailored to the needs of each class as appropriate.L istening and Speaking 3 will improve students’ listeningand speaking skills as they develop competency ineveryday and formal discourses. Students will learneffective strategies for presenting in English and willhave the opportunity to develop their skills throughpublic speaking, role-playing, and podcast exercises. In Reading 4, students will develop strategies in advancedreading comprehension, such as skimming, scanning, andpreviewing. Students’ academic and professional vocabularywill be expanded through practicing the use of synonyms,antonyms, and contextualization. The course also addressesmarketing concepts, advertising and promotional tools, andthe local and international forces that drive innovation invarious spheres of American life. Activities include songlyric analysis, summarizing peer-reviewed articles, andrésumé development.WRITING 3LISTENING AND SPEAKING 4 I n Writing 3, students will learn how to move from thestandard paragraph to well-organized, basic academicessays in various genres. Topics include identifyingpurpose and audience awareness, developinggrammar and academic vocabulary, and understandingorganization patterns.I n Listening and Speaking 4, students will learn and discussthe role of art, communication, and media in society,building upon the English language listening and speakingskills learned in prior courses. This course examines thecore components of creative expression, offering studentsinsight and instruction on listening and speaking throughpresentations, class debate, and critical thinking. Studentswill also exercise advanced listening skills in preparationfor the online Accuplacer exam, taken at the conclusion ofthe program.
