It was amemorable afternoon for the residents. DJ Babs suppliedthe music while the residents played games like bingo,ring toss, bean bag toss and duck pond. Prizes wereawarded to all who participated. We all enjoyed thedelicious corn dogs, pretzels, popcorn and lemonadeprovided by Food Services. The best part of the day wasseeing everyone leave with a smile on their face.Thank you to the amazing staff and volunteers whoworked so very hard to make it a such great day for theresidents.Pictured: Sandra Boletchek & Florence GantThe VHCA/VCAL Assisted Living Administrator ofthe Year Award was presented to our own JoanThomas, Administrator of the District Home, attheir annual convention in September. VirginiaHealth Care Association President Keith Hareremarked that “Ms. Thomas is the driving force forquality at the facility and has been actively involvedin the development andimplementation of acampus-wide diversity program for staff andresidents. In addition to her responsibilities as anAdministrator, Ms. Thomas also directs BirminghamGreen’s community relations program. Some of the topics included Suicide Prevention, ChairYoga, the Music, Imagery and Movement Study and Humor and Self-Care. We would like tothank everyone who helped to make this event a big success.Thank you to the children who attended the NokesvilleChurch of the Brethren VacationBible School this summer. Thisgroup of wonderful children gave adonation of iPods, headphones andiTunes gift cards to the residents ofthe District Home. Charlotte was along-time employee of the Food Service team, always thinkingof others before herself. Her husband was a resident at BG formany years and Charlotte remained active in Family Council.Charlotte will be missed by all of us.The Virginia Health Care Association Foundation awardednurse scholarships to six BG employees. This award is grantedto a Certified Nursing Assistant pursuing a LPN degree or to aLPN pursing a RN degree. Kyle came up withthe idea to construct an area whereresidents and family memberscould sit and enjoy each other’scompany outside on a park bench.Kyle presented a design to ourCEO and COO and was excited togain their approval to moveforward with his idea.Kyleimmediately began solicitingmonetary donations and negotiatedreduced pricing from area retailersall while recruiting 20 volunteersto help construct the project.Pictured: Kyle PicotKyle was so successful in his fundraisingefforts that he will be presentingBirmingham Green with a check for theamount of the excess funds he collected.Next time you are on the campus, pleasetake a moment to enjoy the sitting area infront of the Nursing Home entrance. Weare very proud of Kyle and all of his hardwork and we are certain he has a brightfuture ahead.Giving back to thecommunity runs in thePicot family. In June2012 Kyle’s brotherRoyce Picotremodeled ourcourtyard and it hasbeen enjoyed byresidents and familiesever since.Birmingham Green’s artist in residence, George Mosely, is a nativeof Arlington, Virginia where he spent his early years in the Cherrydaleneighborhood. Mr. Mosely excelled in art during his early schoolyears and continued to pursue his love of art at the Corcoran School ofArt in the 1960s. Painting is Mosely’s favorite medium, and the artisthas worked in oils, acrylics, and occasionally watercolors. Over thecourse of his career, Mr. Mosely has explored many themes in hisartwork including Biblical topics, nature, landscapes and animals.While the Birmingham Green campus is the home of this artist’s workfor the past few years, he has shared his talents at many of the placeshe has lived in the past. When asked about the motivation for hiswork, Mosely shared that his art comes out of his heart to bring loveand joy to everybody.“Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all other seasons” Jim BishopBirmingham Green has cared for low-income older adults and disabled residents of Northern Virginia formore than 80 years. The featured speaker was Brenda Carrier,DPT who leads the team of Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapists at Birmingham Green.Ms. Carrier presented an overview of the rehabilitation services offered to the residents on campusand she discussed the goals of Occupational Therapy which include helping residents with activitiesof daily living and restoring as much independence to them as possible. After answering questions,Ms. Carrier turned the floor over to Mr. Chapnkem, Administrator at Willow Oaks, who discussedthe importance of the application process when residents decide to move from the Nursing Home orDistrict Home into Willow Oaks. Tracy Maynard, Program Manager at the District Home,described the new identification cards residents will receive in order to vote in the upcomingelections. Ms. Pam Clark, Administrator of the Nursing Home, discussed some of the decoratingchanges taking place on campus starting with the lobby.

Theyshowed up 30 strong for one day of service.They were tasked with the job of revitalizingour courtyards at Willow Oaks. They pulledweeds, trimmed bushes, planted flowers andput in a truck load of mulch. AOL did anamazing job for our facility and our residentsand staff truly appreciates all of their effortsto beautify the campus.Thank you and great job, AOL!Volunteers& InternsNo act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. — AesopLynn Rae Wentworth: Welcome back! Lynn Rae is a MSW student at Geor ge Mason and is r etur ningto Birmingham Green for her clinical year field placement. Willow Oaks is delighted to have her supportingand advocating for the residents.Alejandra Martinez is a senior in Geor ge Mason’s BSW Social Wor k Pr ogr am. She has spent timevolunteering with youth programs and is excited to work with the nursing home residents where she feels shecan grow and practice handling difficult situations.Christine Hall has enter ed her second year at VCU in the MSW pr ogr am. Raising two sons andteaching for 10 years in the Fairfax County school system, she has embarked on a new path and we are happyto have her working with the residents at the District Home. She hopes to work in a setting where she canassist individuals and families dealing with chronic or terminal illness.Emily Stickford r eceived her Bachelor ’s in Social Wor k fr om VCU and is cur r ently a MSW student atGeorge Mason where she will graduate in May. She has several years experience working in specialeducation and providing services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She has enjoyedgetting to know the residents at the District Home and is very happy to be here at Birmingham Green.Kimberly Giller is a pr oud Ar my wife pur suing a Social Wor k degr ee at Geor ge Mason Univer sity.Kimberly believes in a positive attitude and it shows in her work with the residents. In her free time, sheenjoys reading and running marathons. She is excited to graduate in May and begin helping others.Shannon Masiak has a Bachelor ’s Degr ee in Social Wor k and is wor king towar d her MSW at Geor geMason. She keeps busy with 3 grown daughters and 3 grandsons. We are very happy to have her workingwith the residents at Birmingham Green.
