TR ADITIONSRedmond Lights began modestly in 1999 with a stroll down the Sammamish River Trail and hasdeveloped into a cherished tradition for many Redmond families.Redmond Lights is a festival about diversity. Many cultures and faiths celebrate during the winterseason – often helping to bring light to dark winter nights. Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Yuleand Diwali all use fire, candles and light to brighten the spirits around the darkest days of the year.Ayyam-i-Ha (Baha’i): The Baha’i calendar consists of 19 months of 19 dayseach, giving 361 days. Baha’i children around the world look forward to Ayyami-Ha, the intercalary days that fill out the rest of the year. It is a time devoted tocharity, hospitality and gift giving.Bodhi Day (Buddhist): Festival recalls the day when the Buddha achievedenlightenment. Also known as Rehatsu, it is generally regarded as the birth dayof Buddhism.Bonfire Night (England): Anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot is celebrated withhuge bonfires and fireworks. It remembers Guy Fawkes who plotted to blow upthe English Parliament in 1605.Christmas (Christian): Holiday celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. It is also atime for Santa to visit and for friends and family to gather and celebrate peace, good cheer and charity.Diwali (Hindu, India): Festival of lights, splendor and joy honoring the Hindugoddess Laksmi, the goddess of fortune, good luck, riches and generosity. Homesare outlined with dipas (special oil lamps) or lights to welcome and guide Laksmi.Hanukkah (Jewish): Festival of lights celebrates the victory of the Maccabeesover the Syrians in the Jews’ fight for religious freedom. Candles are lit for eightdays symbolizing the miracle of a small amount of sacred oil burning until morecould be found.Kwanzaa (African-American): Non-religious holiday inspired by the civil rightsstruggle. It celebrates African-American heritage, pride, community, family andculture through the tradition of lighting one candle representing one of theseven principles of Kwanzaa each night for seven nights.Las Posadas (Christian, Mexico): Festival commemorates the pilgrimage ofJoseph and Mary as they sought lodging in Bethlehem. Candlelit processionsgo door to door to symbolize their search.Loi Krathong (Thailand): Festival to bring good luck is also known as the Festivalof the Floating Leaf Cups. Leaf shaped boats with burning candles and flowersare launched into rivers to take away the sins of last year and bring good luckfor the coming year.Ramadan (Islam): During this holy month, worshippers fast during daylighthours. The month ends with Eid-ul-Fitr, the festival of happiness, celebrated withspecial prayers, feasts, sweets and gift-giving.Saint Lucia Day (Sweden): Festival honors Saint Lucia. The eldest daughterwears a lighted advent wreath of five candles on her head to serve her family,as Lucia served the poor.Yule (Wiccan): Festival celebrating the winter solstice. From this day forward, light begins to return and the rebirth of the Sun God is celebrated with thelighting of the Yule log and candles and wreath making.
