One studentin attendance commented, "Hewas outstanding. MillerEducation Complex ofOzarka College in Melbourne the week of March7-11 from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30p.m.“The Artmobileis a wonderfulway tointroduceaudiences tofine art in theirowncommunities,"Ned Metcalf,State Services Managerat the Arts Center.The Artmobile, one of thenation's only mobile galleries of its size, showcases anall-new exhibition – Frameworks – Art from the ArtsCenter’s Permanent Collection.The Artmobileattempts to be a travel –size version of the ArkansasArts Center, bringing art topeople who cannot regularly visit an art museum.While it is impossible torepresent the full breadthof the Arts Center collection, the current exhibitionaboard the Artmobile is anoverview of the kinds ofobjects you can expect tosee in the Museum.The exhibition includesworks in all mediums thatare always thought provoking as well as aestheticallypleasing.The exhibitionattempts to answer questions about the Arts Center's collection, such as:Why museums collect art?How museums collect art?What makes the ArkansasArts Center collection special? V O L U M EX ,I S S U EPAGE43SCCRC Becomes First Cornerstone Patron for AmphitheatreProposed AmphitheatreThe Stone County CommunityResource Council has becomethe first Cornerstone Patrondesignee for Ozarka CollegeMountain View's amphitheatrebuilding project. After theirFebruary 14 meeting, a 10,000check was presented toOzarka College President, Dr.Richard Dawe. The Council hasnow made two substantial donations toward the MountainView building project.After sponsoring the StudentSuccess Center in July of 2010and this recent gift, they arenow one of the largest donorsfor the Ozarka College Foundation, according to Ozarka'sDirector of Advancement,Suellen Davidson. "The StoneCounty Community ResourceCouncil continues to set anexample of true compassionand generosity. This donationwill further the plans to buildthe amphitheatre which will notonly enrich the lives of Ozarkastudents, but the surroundingpopulation as well."The amphitheatre will be available for student and educationalpurposes, as well as communityevents. The President's Scholarship is worth 5,000 per year.To be eligible the recipient must be a graduate of Ozarka College by May 2011 with an Associate degree and a cumulativegrade point average of 3.00. PAGE4New Employees and Positions Filled Recently at Ozarka CollegeOzarka welcomes some new faces, some are familiar, but in new places, such as Zeda Wilkerson and DrexeneWiney who recently changed positions; along with Kay Adkins and Shelly Medlock who are new to Mountain Viewand the Ozarka Kitchen.Zeda Wilkerson has been with Ozarka for five years, having come to the College as Director ofAdmissions from Lyon College where she was a Recruiter. She was promoted last month toRegistrar. Zeda completed her Master’s Degree in Community College Personnel in May of 2010from Arkansas Tech, and received her Bachelor’s from Lyon College in 2001. Her family includeshusband, Travis, and two sons, Zane and Wyatt. She enjoys reading, music and traveling with herfamily. She says she looks forward to continuing to serve student in her new capacity as well asworking more closely with the academic advising component of Ozarka.Drexene Winey has been with Ozarka as an administrative assistant for the Information SystemsDepartment over two years. She was hired this month into a new position in Student Services asFinancial Aid Specialist and looks forward to working with students to help them in a veryimportant part of their college experience. Drexene and her husband, Dale live in Ash Flat andhave three grown children and six grandchildren who are Drexene’s pride and joy! She is amember of the Arkansas Association of Two-Year Colleges Board of Directors and is known forher organizational skills.Kay Adkins was hired in February to fill the Advising Specialist position in Mountain View. She isalso an adjunct instructor and teaches College Success Orientation and Practical Writing on theMountain View site. She and her husband Carl moved to the Mountain View area from Texas abouteight years ago. They have two children and two grandchildren. Kay also enjoys knitting, horses,and reading in her spare time. She says she is very excited to be a part of the Ozarka team in theStudent Success area.A friendly face that has been in the Ozarka Kitchen this semester is Shelly Medlock. Shelly is alifelong resident of Mount Pleasant where she and her husband, Ken live with their daughter, Sadie.She began working at Ozarka in January and says her favorite dishes to prepare are usuallydesserts. Along with cooking, Shelly enjoys crafting and gardening. She has been a stay at homemom for several years and is enjoying working with everyone at Ozarka.Upcoming Allied Health WorkshopThe Student Success Center in conjunction with the Allied Health Division is hosting workshops for the alliedhealth related programs offered at Ozarka College. V O L U M EX ,I S S U EPAGE4Ozarka Graduate Continues to ExcelOzarka College continues toexpand its health care offeringsbecause of the need for professionals in the allied health field.The Arkansas Rural NursingEducation Consortium ARNECprogram at Ozarka has recently expanded to accept 40students per year, and the LPNprograms continue to flourish.Ozarka also continues to offercredit and non-credit CertifiedNurse Aide (CNA) courses tothe public as well as participating high schools and local nursing and rehab facilities asneeded.Many success stories existfrom students and graduateswithin these programs. A particular local graduate, RoyGuiltner is one such success.Roy actually began his nursingcareer over 10 years ago whenhe was accepted into Ozarka'sLPN program; he then droppedout the first semester. Hesays, "At that time I lacked theconfidence that I needed to getthrough the program. I became discouraged and whenthe opportunity to go back towork fulltime came up, I quitnursing school and went backto my comfort zone of workingin a factory."Afterseveraldifferent factoryjobs and workingoff and on atBoeing, where hewas in 2006when the plantofficially closeditsMelbourneoperation, Roytookanotheropportunity togo to college. He credits several faculty and staff at Ozarkafor helping him graduate theLPN program in May of 2008,then complete the RN programin December of 2009. "I had towork very hard to make mygrades and with the help ofmany caring faculty, staff andadministration who continuedto be my encouragers and believe in me, I began to believe inmyself and completed my goalsof becoming a nurse."Roy is a lifelong resident of IzardCounty. He and his wife live inMelbourne with their three teenage sons. Roy's other passion ismusic. He has been the pianist atMidwest Baptist Church for 30years and he enjoys shape notesinging, which is a type of congregational note reading usedmainly in gospel music. He admits that the piano is one placehe exhibits high confidence andhe is known in the local area forhis musical talent."I had to workvery hard to makemy grades andwith the help ofmany caringOzarka is currently acceptingapplications for the next LPNclasses beginning in the fall semester. His advice to otherswho might think they cannot goback to school and begin a newcareer as a non-traditional student is to not give up. "If I cando it, anyone can! One student is selected to receive a 500scholarship during the Spring 2012 semester and represent Ozarka as the All-Star at the AATYC annualconference on October 18, 2011 in Hot Springs.The Academic All-Stars program is designed to reward excellence in academics and leadership at eachtwo-year college in Arkansas as well as service to the college and the community.To be eligible, students must be an Arkansas resident, expect to be enrolled at Ozarka College throughSpring 2012, have completed at least 24 credit hours in pursuit of an Associate degree by the end of thecurrent Spring semester and intend to graduate at the end of Summer 2012. The student must also currently post a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 out of a possible 4.00 in all credit coursework taken at that college.The deadline to apply is May 2, 2011.
