2012 Annual Report

“ Our net is being cast wider interms of the ones we seek tohelp and the ones who mightseek to help us in this effort.”Dear Friends of Catholic Charities of West Tennessee:On The Move. It is both the theme of this year’s Catholic Charities of West Tennesseeannual report and quite literally, a reflection of how our diocese’s social services armis responding to the changing needs of our community.Whether it is the two parishes where Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA)services are offered to Spanish speaking taxpayers, the four parish locationswhere the CCWTN Mobile Food Pantry now makes a monthly visit, the five parisheswhere an Immigration Services Case Manager regularly works with parish staff andimmigration clients or the nine parishes in the Jackson Deanery where small grantswere made to non-profits on behalf of the local parish, Catholic Charities of WestTennessee is On The Move.Catholic Charities of West Tennessee is our social services arm – yours and mine andit needs our ongoing support in prayer, volunteer time and donations – please begenerous in all.In the Divine Word,Most Reverend J. Terry Steib, S.V.D.Bishop of Memphis in Tennessee

“ Today, CCWTN is smaller, more financially stable, farless dependent on governmentdollars and less oriented towardsbricks and mortar facilities.”Dear Friends:In a diocese that covers an area of over 10,000 square miles weare beginning to make an impact in more parts of it. We nowhave programs underway in fifteen parishes! Equally impressive is the level of engagement we enjoy from an increasing number of parishes and schools that support our workby making us the beneficiary of their various ministries andprograms. For each effort, large or small, we and the clients weserve are most grateful. And we are On The Move. Our Food Pantry distributed over50 tons of food this past year and was named Food Pantry ofthe Year by the Mid-South Food Bank! Genesis House addedfive new beds solely dedicated to homeless Veterans (a rapidlyincreasing need in our community). Anticipating a shift innational priorities, we deemphasized our work with refugeeswhile doubling down on programs to assist immigrants ontheir path toward citizenship. Camp Love & Learn returns thissummer and this year it will be based at Church of the Resurrection in Hickory Hill. Finally, with fewer employees (a result of our need to significantly reduce overhead), we were able to increase the salariesof our lowest paid staff and we now rely more than ever ona rapidly growing volunteer base of over 500 individuals –young and old, who provide the manpower that makes ourwork successful! Please, take a few minutes to read our stories and then join uson our journey!Board of DirectorsVirginia Scherer , ChairCommunity Volunteer,John Smarrelli Jr., Ph.D, Vice ChairChristian Brothers UniversityAnne Marie Kadien, SecretaryCommunity VolunteerJim AbernathyCatholic Diocese of MemphisIvette BaldizonShelby County Mayors OfficeAllie BondInternational PaperTom BowenUniversity of MemphisAlayna BrownWalker & AssociatesChris ConroyWMC-TV5Bill Duncan, Past ChairHilton CorporationReverend Michael Joyce, CMCatholic Diocese of MemphisMsgr. Fig Tree / Mobile Food PantryFood and clothing - necessities in everyone’s lifeLast fall Lupe at St. John’s in Brownsville ran out to meet our mobile food van. With eyes brimming withtears, she kissed the volunteers on both cheeks, smiling while she pointed to the Spanish words on ourmobile food van. That month the van not only brought food but the certainty that families like Lupe’scould buy school supplies with the dollars that they saved on food.Your donations feed the working poor, like Lupe’s family, for less than 0.40 per day per person.Sarah was excited that school had ended for the year. She was even moreexcited that she would be going to Camp Love & Learn over the summer. She loved the swimming trips and the field trips to local museums. Sheloved the petting zoo that visited the camp. She loved the math games hercamp counselor showed her on the computer. However, the thing Sarah lovedmost about Camp Love & Learn was meeting the other campers and making new friends. She made new friends from different cultures that spokedifferent languages. Friends that continued to be a part of her life well pastthe last day of camp. Camp Love & Learn gave Sarah a safe and fun place tolearn and play, as well as an experience she would never forget.

Immigration ServicesGuiding immigrants on their path towards citizenshipFifteen months old, an American citizen by birth, fighting an aggressiveform of acute leukemia at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and hisMom is over 1,000 miles away unable to be with him.Immigration work is complex. But then you meet Ulises and it becomes so much simpler.Working with the United States Customs and Border Protection Agency, CCWTN found a legal andappropriate way to reunite Ulises and his mom – Dolores during this past Christmas season.Today, Ulises and his mom reside at Target House. Ulises remains in treatment at St. Jude’s, and since wefirst met him we have seen him take his first steps both as a toddler and on his road to recovery.Brenda lived the American dream, raised in an upper middle class family, served our country for 7 years with the U.S. Navy, toured the world, married and had one child. She had a nice home and worked for a periodof time in a District Attorney’s office. Who would have ever imagined thather life would change so drastically after the loss of her mother and a shorttime later, her home?Brenda was faced with and endured helplessness, hunger and homelessness off and on for the last 7years. As a Veteran, she was familiar with the Memphis Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC)and resorted to sleeping in one of the waiting rooms at night before the security guard asked her toleave. Eventually, she was referred by the VAMC Health Care and Homeless Veterans Program to GenesisHouse, a residential licensed treatment facility for the homeless where she was able to regain controlof her life. She was awarded a housing voucher through the VAMC. After 5 years and 5 appeals, Brenda nowreceives Social Security Disability Income benefits. After moving out of Genesis House, Brenda istoday financially, mentally, as well as spiritually stable in her apartment that was decorated with allnew furniture by one of her brothers. According to Brenda, “Genesis House was my savior. You gaveme the confidence I needed, fed, clothed and kept me clean - body and soul”.
