This year’s timely selection is AllAmerican Boys, written by Jason Reynoldsand Brendan Kiely.“One Maryland One Book is a wonderfulexample of what the powerfulcombination of literacy and communitycan achieve. With this 2016 selection,we are looking forward to another seasonof connecting diverse audiences andcommunities with real-world issues,”says David Payne, C. Burr Artz PublicLibrary assistant branch manager andFCPL’s program coordinator of OMOB.“Over the past nine years, Marylandershave embraced this annual opportunityto come together through the reading ofone book. The power of literature providesa lens through which we can exploreour lives and our communities together.This year’s selection offers the chance todiscuss systemic issues that impact us all,”commented Andrea Lewis of MarylandCenter for the Book, Maryland Humanities.This 2016 Coretta Scott King AuthorHonor book, tells the story of two teens,one white and one African-American,forced to deal with the repercussionsFCPL.ORGBOOKMARKS FALL 2016of a single violent act that leaves thecommunity bitterly divided by racialtension. When 16-year-old Rashad goesto the corner store to buy chips, he ismistaken for a shoplifter by a policeofficer, who believes the teen’s refusalto leave the store signifies his resistingarrest. The officer throws punches, evenas the boy struggles to stay still. Betweenwitnesses who watch this unfold andthe video camera recording every move,this altercation leads to a division firstwithin the local high school and then,by extension, the entire community. Anengaging and relevant read, this titlenonetheless focuses on a difficult topicand requires thoughtful discussion.All American Boys has received positivereviews from both high schoolers andadults. FCPL offers creative libraryprogramming through timely discussiongroups and book clubs. The book isavailable for checkout in print, audio, ande-formats.Additionally, there are several programsbeing held at FCPL branches, includingart lessons, writing workshops, booktalks, and a panel discussion with Dr.Scott from Hood College. Librarians are on-call to help withdigital content questions using libraryservices such as Hoopla, Overdrive,Rosetta Stone, Fold3, and more. If you arestruggling with keeping up with the latestgadgets or simply want to learn moreabout the newest trends in technology,FCPL is the place for you.This fall, the Brunswick, Urbana, andWalkersville Branch Libraries will offerdrop-in programs, while Thurmont offersa special Minecraft edition.
