Hesurprising to relate, a retiringretiring and timidtimidperson, unwilling to talk about himself,concerned only with the task ofcommunicating the message which hebelieved had been entrusted to him. Whathe has leftleft us is his works - his theologicaltreatises, his biblical commentaries andInstitutionmonumental Institutionsermons, and his monumentalof the ChristianReligion.TheThepresentpresentChristian Religion.collection seeks to make the writings ofthe Reformer available in the most directform possible, by presenting, in almostevery case,case, thethe originaloriginal editionseditions ofof hishisprintedworks.ThisisCalvinasheprinted works. This is Calvin as heimpacted onon thethe readingreading publicpublic ofof thetheimpactedsixteenthcentury.sixteenth century.His lifeMany biographiesbiographies ofof CalvinCalvin havehave beenManywritten, and this is not the place toprovide yet another. A few words ofintroduction, however, will help to placethe present collection in context. He wasBible and the Church Fathers (and(andthereby laying the foundations of hisself-taught theology), and writing hisfirst works. His first publishedChristianaetheological study,study, the ChristianaeReligionis Institutio, was probablycompleted by August 1535,1535, thoughpublication (in Basle) was delayed untilearly 1536.1536.dragooned him into joining in the workcity. UnlikeUnlikeof the Reformation in the city.Luther, Zwingli or Bucer, Calvin wasnever ordained in the Roman CatholicChurch; he saw his ordination as aprophetic call fromfrom God (communicatedby Farel) within the exceptionalexceptional contextof the early Reformation.Reformation.Exilefirst sojournsojourn in Geneva lasted onlyHis first20 months, ending in apparent disasterwhen he was exiled from the city,city, alongwithwith Farel, forfor opposingopposing the citygovernmentgovernment in a conflictconflict between theauthorityauthority of State and Church, and formakingmaking himselfhimself thoroughlythoroughly unpopularwith the citizens by attemptingattempting toimpose on each individual a confessionof ReformedReformed faith.faith. He then went toStrasbourg, where his three years asrefugeepastor of the French refugeecongregationcongregation and as lecturer in theAcademyAcademy enabled him to mature histhinkingthinking (this was to be the only periodof his lifelife duringduring which he was able toenjoyenjoy the company of his intellectualand theological equals). He composeda liturgy for his congregation, andintroduced the singing of metricalpsalms in congregational worship.
