Frederick County Public LibrariesAnnounces New DirectorIn May, the Frederick County Public Libraries (FCPL) Board of Trustees selected James Kelly as the new director for Frederick County’slibrary system. James served as interim director since January, following the retirement of Darrell Batson, FCPL’s director of 20 years.Read on to learn more about James and his plans for FCPL.Q&A WITH FCPL’S NEW DIRECTORQ. Why are you the right personto lead FCPL?A. Before this opportunity, I served asFCPL’s associate director for operations,so I’m incredibly familiar with our librarysystem and its day-to-day operations.I bring with me 27 years of experienceworking in public libraries, and I’m confidentthe lessons I’ve learned along the way willprove valuable to our library customers.Above all though, I am passionate aboutlibraries and the value they bring to theircommunity. Beyond offering an extensivecollection, FCPL provides valuableprograms and services to the public. Weoffer access to incredible online tools andresources and we welcome more than200,000 people to our programs each year.As I settle into my new role as director,I want to focus on what we offer ourcustomers and further strengthen ourrole in our communities.Q. What can the residents of Frederickexpect from their library?A. Our library customers can expect a lotof their library! First, our libraries and ourstaff are committed to three core values:we are kind; we listen and connect; andwe create. Everything we do is rooted inthese values.Additionally, I view the library as aconnection point—a place wherecommunity members can connect to us,to our partners, and to each other; I hopemembers of the community share inthis vision. I want residents to view theirlibrary as a hub of intellectual discoveryand cultural exploration as well as aninclusive, attractive and safe space.Q. Do you have any significantchanges planned for FCPL?A. I’m fortunate to have taken on thedirector role at a great time for FCPL.Thanks in large part to Darrell Batson,FCPL’s previous director, and to thededicated staff across all of our branches,Frederick’s libraries are thriving. My goalisn’t to make significant changes; rather,I’ll focus on areas where we can improveand strengthen our impact.During his nearly 20 years with FCPL,Darrell focused on building a systemequipped to serve the people of Frederick. While I plan to continue building Frederick’slibrary system to match the size andenthusiasm of our community, the staff andI will also focus on three key areas: Positioning the library as a center ofthe community—a destination forthe people of Frederick County.I’m thrilled to lead FCPL during such anexciting time, and I’m looking forward tothis next chapter.Q. This year’s summer challenge atFCPL was themed Radio Frederick.Given the focus on music, can youshare your favorite musician or album?A. It’s too hard to pick a favorite, but onealbum I am playing a lot lately is KamasiWashington’s “The Epic.” The title tells youeverything. It is a massive work, runningclose to three hours. Washington is a tenorsaxophonist and you can hear echoes ofJohn Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders inhis work. His original pieces—particularlythose with vocal and string arrangements—are wonderful and expansive, and hisinterpretation of Debussy’s “Claire de Lune”is just beautiful.
