Toattain this goal, BCC offers a College PreparatoryProgram to help students develop the skillsnecessary for academic success in college levelcourses. The College Prep curriculum includescourses in Mathematics, English, Reading andEnglish as a Second Language (ESL).MathMAT 0012MAT 0020MAT 0024EnglishENC 0010ENC 0021ENC A 0001CREA llege Prep PlacementCollege prep course requirements are determined onthe basis of a student’s placement test scores. Allstudents entering BCC must take the Florida CollegePlacement Test (CPT) or submit a State of Floridacollege-ready diploma or acceptable AdvancedPlacement, SAT or ACT scores that exempt themfrom the college prep program or they must submitcollege transcripts that show the completion ofFreshman English and/or Intermediate Algebra.Students who test into college prep courses mustsuccessfully complete all of the required courseworkto qualify for graduation.Placement Test OptionsFor students admitted after October 1, 1991.1. ACT (American College Testing Program)2. Enhanced ACT (American College TestingProgram)3. SAT (The College Board)4. SAT1 (The College Board; administrationsbetween 3/1/94 and 3/31/95)5. A feewill be charged for each re-test with the CPT.Retesting is prohibited if the student is currentlyenrolled in the discipline for which he/she wishes toretest. Exceptions may be made by the appropriateacademic administrator.College Prep CreditCollege prep courses carry credit, but the creditscannot be used to satisfy degree requirements.However, these credits do count toward veteran'sbenefits and financial aid requirements.Admission to the College Prep ProgramStudents should contact any Counseling andAdvisement Office to arrange for placement testingor to discuss their existing placement test scores.Enrolling in College Prep CoursesStudents who are required to take college prepcourses, as a result of their placement test scores onthe SAT, ACT, or CPT, must register for suchcourses each term until all required courses aresuccessfully completed. In addition, the followingrestrictions for course sequencing will apply andincrease a student's chances for academic success: Students who test into two or more collegeprep disciplines (ENC, MAT, and REA) arelimited to 12 credits in a full term and sevencredits in a summer term. Students are required to register for thecollege prep reading course during their firstterm. Students who test into REA0001C arerequired to register for it during their firstterm. Students who test into REA0006C arerequired to register for it during their firstterm. Students are required to take the highestlevel of prep reading (REA0006C) the termimmediately after successful completion ofthe lowest level of college prep reading(REA0001C). Students testing into three college prepdisciplines (ENC, MAT, or REA) arerequired to satisfactorily complete thecollege prep reading sequence (REA0001Cand/or REA0006C) before registering for acollege prep math course (MAT0012 orMAT0024).Catalog 2007-2008Broward Community College

Students testing into at least two collegeprep disciplines (ENC, MAT, and REA) arerequired to take SLS1501, College SuccessSkills, during their first 9 credits. (This onecredit course serves as an introduction toBCC and teaches students strategies andskills to help them succeed in college.).Students may substitute SLS1001, Strategiesfor Success, for SLS1501.Students testing into three college prepcourses are required to take SLS1001,Strategies for Success, during their first 6credits. (This three credit course providesstudents with opportunities to learn aboutBroward Community College and highereducation, acquire and practice learningstrategies, explore personal learning styles,identify career options, and develop lifelong citizenship.)These requirements apply to college prep studentswho are seeking degrees and have not previouslyattended college. Students must meet with anAcademic Advisor in any Counseling andAdvisement Office regarding proper courseselections, sequencing, and requirements.Private ProvidersStudents have the option of pursuing college prepinstruction through programs offered by privateproviders of instruction. Students interested in thisoption should obtain additional information fromany campus Student Affairs office.Studentsexercising this option must retake and pass theappropriate sections of the CPT prior to enrolling incollege-level courses.Note: Private providers are not affiliated with BCCand the College neither endorses nor warrants theirservices. BCC assumes no responsibility related tothe operations of these providers, and specificallydisclaims any and all liabilities resulting from, orarising out of, or in connection with, students’ use oftheir products and services.Maximum Attempts Per CourseBased on state regulations, students may enroll nomore than three times in any particular college prepcourse. Students may not "audit" college prepcourses. Students will be assessed the full cost ofinstruction for the third attempt. Exemptions maybe granted based on documented financial hardshipsor extenuating circumstances.Details aboutBroward Community Collegepetitioning for an exemption are available in anycampus Student Affairs Office.English as a Second Language (ESL)The purpose of the ESL Program is to prepare nonnative English speaking students to functionsuccessfully in BCC courses.Entering the ESL ProgramStudents who are non-native English speakersshould contact any Counseling and AdvisementOffice for an appointment. An ESL placement testand writing sample will be administered to allstudents, regardless of their TOEFL score. Studentswill be placed in ESL Program courses based on theresults of the ESL placement test and writingsample.Course Load for Visa StudentsVisa students must take a full course load in order tomaintain a student visa. Mission StatementThe Associate in Arts degree provides courses ofstudy equivalent to those offered to freshman andsophomore students in the lower division ofFlorida's state universities. If students receive anA.A. Degree from B.C.C., their degree will, in mostcases, meet the lower division requirements of auniversity and admit them to junior-level status. Thedegree requirements consist of General Educationrequirements that parallel university requirementsand electives in preparation for a major area ofstudy. The A.A. degree includes 36 semester hoursof General Education courses in addition to coursesappropriate for the upper-division major selected bythe student. The General Education requirementsare within the subject areas of communications,mathematics, social sciences, humanities, and naturalsciences.
