VIRTUAL REALITY DELIVERS IMMERSIVEEXPERIENTIAL LEARNINGPA G E 2For a nursing student whose future career willtouch the lives of countless patients and theirfamilies, it’s one thing to plod through informationin a dry textbook and quite another to snap ona virtual reality (VR) headset and take a 3D tourinside your own body. VR represents the state ofthe art in education by using immersive, simulatedenvironments to mimic real-life scenarios.Concordia University of Portland, Ore., ispioneering VR in nursing education with Enduvo’scontent authoring and distribution software, HPEliteDesk 800 Workstation Edition Desktop withpowerful Intel Core processors, and HTC ViveVirtual Reality System headsets to bring contentto life in ways that foster deep learning andinformation retention.

I N DU ST RY:EducationOBJECTIVE:Train highly qualifiednurses who can thinkcritically to improvehospital and patientoutcomesAPPROACH:Leverage virtualreality to deliver animmersive experientiallearning environmentthat deepens andaccelerates learning bymimicking real worldsituationsNew program accelerates nursing educationFounded in 1905, Concordia University-Portland isa private, nonprofit Lutheran liberal arts universityserving approximately 5,500 students in morethan 20 fields of study. For many years, Concordiahas admitted 40 students annually into itstraditional, campus-based four-year BA degree innursing. Two years ago, in partnership with OrbisEducation, Concordia also launched an AcceleratedBachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) programcombining online coursework, onsite simulationlab instruction, and in-hospital clinical rotations.PA G E 3ABSN students graduate in as few as 16 monthsprepared to sit for their licensure exam.ABSN education isn’t just fast; it’s also designedto empower students through experientiallearning. Virtual reality supports this educationalmission while helping Concordia meet its businessgoals. The university admits 72 students threetimes a year to its ABSN program and needs toscale capacity to accommodate this growth. Atthe same time, Concordia competes with morethan a dozen other Portland nursing schools, distinguishing itself through quality and innovationto attract the best students.“I understand we are the first school of nursingin Oregon to use virtual reality in this way, so it’sa huge differentiator for us,” says Mary Oakes, assistant professor of nursing, and head of thesimulation and skills lab at Concordia University’sSchool of Nursing, College of Health & HumanServices. “It’s a better way to learn than readingchapter after chapter in a dry book.”Long involved with simulation and nursinginformatics, Oakes is a member of the ConcordiaSchool of Nursing simulation and clinical skills lab.In that role, she collaborates with Orbis Education, whose hybrid learning model turns a university’sexisting curriculum into an online format andhelps students gain clinical placements with Orbishealthcare partners. Oakes was speaking withher Orbis contact one day about her ideas forleveraging virtual reality. The contact put her intouch with a colleague at Intel, who in turn reachedout to Enduvo and HP. The teamwork of all theseinnovators created a groundbreaking solution forConcordia.Testing the virtual waters“Concordia had heard about the potential of virtualreality to enhance education, and wanted to try“I SEE THE COMBINATION OF ENDUVOSOFTWARE, HTC VIVE HEADSETS, AND HPELITEDESK HARDWARE AS A WIN FOR ALL.WE CAN AT TR ACT THE BEST STUDENTS ANDENHANCE THEIR EDUCATION, CREATING BET TEROUTCOMES FOR PATIENTS AND HOSPITALS.”Mary Oakes, Assistant Professor of Nursing, Head of Simulation and SkillsLab, Concordia University

IT MATTERS:Provide students with personal, immersive 3D educationalexperienceEnable teachers to easily create and share virtual realitycontentAvoid software developer, graphic designer, studio time costsLeverage technology to competitively differentiate nursingprogramBUSINESS MATTERS:Maintain 100% student nursing licensure exam pass rateIncrease student engagement with courseworkEmpower students to think criticallyEnable teachers to deliver content in highly effectivemodalitiesABOUT ENDUVO:Enduvo is a powerfully simple, immersive, content authoringand delivery solution that removes the complexity, inflexibility, and high cost associated with creatingaugmented and virtual reality content. With Enduvo’smarket-leading software and distribution platform, anyonecan create and share AR/VR content in minutes, withoutany technical training, and at a fraction of the cost. Withimmersive content, learners are more engaged, retainmore information in less time, and are better prepared forthe work they do. Enduvo started with technology fromthe University of Illinois. It has an exclusive license on thetechnology for use across any industry. To find out more about how to use Enduvo at yourorganization visit www.enduvo.com.PA G E 4it out,” recalls Joe Tieu, chief product officer ofEnduvo. “We wanted to show them how easyclass productivity, the HP EliteDesk is part ofa portfolio of products that can not only driveit is for people with no IT expertise to createpowerful VR content that delivers a highly effectiveimmersive educational experience.”Created by doctors to teach future healthcarepractitioners, Enduvo is an asynchronous learningformat that enables educators to bring theirteaching materials and models into a virtualenvironment, and then record themselvesdelivering lectures and problem-solving prompts.Cost-effective and easy to use, the platformeliminates the need for software developers, graphic designers, studio time, and specializedequipment typically associated with creatingimmersive content.Enduvo visited Concordia with a full solutionsetup including the Enduvo Learning Platform,an HTC Vive VR headset, and an HP EliteDesk880 Tower PC equipped with an Intel Core i7-770processer and 16.0 GB RAM. Featuring enterprise-interactive and immersive VR experiences, butalso do so on an HP commercial platform thatoffers industry-leading reliability, security, andmanageability.Deeply committed to educational innovation,Oakes volunteered to be the first Concordiateacher to create VR content—and tackled anupcoming module on the 12 cranial nerves. Thefirst challenge was to find a good digital modelillustrating the nerves—which Enduvo pulledreadily from its library of digital assets and loadedonto the platform.“When they showed me the model, whereI could walk inside a man’s body and actuallylook up at those little olfactory nerves fromthe very bottom of the cerebrum hanging likelittle chandeliers, I thought, ‘Wow,’” Oakes says.“I’ve been a nurse for 35 years. But I’d neverseen anything like that. Howmight a disease progression unfold? Students feelas if they are having a one-on-one, real-world 3Dexperience, including task-based assessments.Oakes is delighted when she sees understandingdawn on their faces. “Students have grabbedme by the shoulders to say, ‘I get it! It makessense! That’s the coolest thing!’ You’ve touchedsomebody’s life. That’s what’s so fun abouteducation.”“Educational theory talks about the importanceof experiential learning—learning by pictures andstories, not just by reading words,” Oakes adds. “Itis my experience most nurses are visual learners. The more we can provide those visuals, the bettereducational outcomes and student satisfaction we’llhave. I want nurses who can think through why theyare doing something, and whether it’s safe.”Better outcomes for hospitals and patientsConcordia pursues concrete metrics of success. The school aims to maintain its 100% pass rate—achieved with the inaugural graduating class—onthe National Council Licensure Examination forRegistered Nurses, the final step toward earningregistered nurse licensure. It values high ratesof student satisfaction, as well as employersatisfaction with the Concordia graduates they hire.PA G E 5Oakes has a vision for the future of VR atConcordia. Right now, the tool is available tostudents in the simulation lab on campus. She’dlike to see it become available through mobileheadsets, so students can access VR content fromhome or in their communities.“Enduvo, running on the HP platform, empowers us to deliver educational content innew ways our students can absorb faster andbetter,” Oakes says. “Our highly trained nursesthen can go out into the world to enhance patientoutcomes and satisfaction, and increase revenuefor the hospitals that hire them. I see it as a win allthe way.”
