This project is to be turned into your Language Arts teacher on thefirst day of school (either August 21st or August 22nd).Choice 1: Book QuiltAll works of literature are made up of a series of literary elements andtechniques. For this project, you will have to go into depth on nine (9) specifictechniques from the novel Flipped in order to create a “Book Quilt.”1. Take each of the tasks below and write one on a separate sheet of paper(cut into a square-all MUST be the same size).2. Decide how to decorate or illustrate each square.3. Join all nine squares together on tile, poster board, cloth or constructionpaper and “sew” them together to form one large square quilt.Quilt Squares:1. AUTHOR/TITLE: For your center square, list the title of the novel, a bylinefor the author and a brief summary on what the book is about. A picture ofthe book cover must be added here too.2. PROTAGONIST: The main character; usually the hero or “good” person.How old is he/she/it? What are some important character traits: physicaldescription, age, personality traits, etc?

3. ANTAGONIST: Whoever (or whatever) is against the protagonist (could beman, animal, nature, society, supernatural or self). List three specificdetails.4. EXPOSITION: This includes the setting (time period and place of the story)along with a brief summary of the basic situation.5. VOCABULARY: Make a list of five (5) new words you learned along withtheir definition and sentence (provide chapter, page number andparagraph number) of how it was used in the novel.6. THEME: What was the main idea of the novel? The author was trying tomake you look at something in a different way or make a point. What wasit?7. FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE: So much to choose from: simile, metaphor,personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, idiom provideexamples for at least five.8. GENRE/POINT OF VIEW: Is this novel Fiction, Nonfiction, Fantasy,Autobiography . How do you know? Give an example from the story toprove your point. Also, is the story told in first person point of view or third?How do you know? Give an example.9. OPINION: Did you think the author did a good job keeping your interest?Give three (3) specific reasons someone should (or should not) read thisbook.

Choice Two: ABC BookAll works of literature contain certain literary elements/techniques. For thisproject, you will create an “Alphabet Book” that demonstrates your knowledge ofcharacters, events and key literary devices used in the novel Flipped. Someletters will be difficult (such as “X”) so you may occasionally lump two to three(2-3) letters together and give an example from only one letter. Make sure ALLpages have a combination of art AND words in order to receive full credit. Also,this MUST look like a book. Bind the pages together with an actual bindingmachine (available to be done at Office Depot for example) or creatively bindbook however you choose. Point is, project must look like a book.Suggestions/Examples:FRONT COVER: List the title of the novel and a byline for the author.
