SPOTLIGHT ON: A GREAT CAREER STARTCPE’s VeterinaryAssistant ProgramAdam Christman, dvm, mbaVeterinarian and CPE TeacherWhat is a typical day like for aVet Assistant?The Veterinary Assistant starts by havingthe hospital prepared for the veterinarytechnicians and doctors. This involvesstocking supplies such as bandaging material,lab tubes, and syringes, admitting the surgicalpatients for the day by taking a brief history,and checking in with the receptionists tomake sure they have all they need for their daysuch as office supplies, faxes, photocopies,or files pulled. The VA helps work directlywith the veterinary technician team byassisting in exam room etiquette providingexceptional client service, restraining thepatients, and assisting with blood draws andurine collection. The VA is responsible for earcleaning, nail trims, exotic animal restraint,anal sac expression, and drawing up vaccinesand injections. They also assess hospitalizedpatients, taking vitals such as temperature,pulse, and respiratory rates, assess when apatient is in pain, scared, or aggressive, andassist the surgical patients relieve themselvesoutside the hospital. Essentially anythingthat you can think of on the human side forbasic nursing care, a VA is equally responsibleon the veterinary side. The VA helps in takingradiographs, preparing surgical packs for thehospital, and assists in maintaining a cleanhospital environment.How does the VeterinarianAssistant Program at CPEprepare students for a careeras Vet Assistant?As a successful graduate, you receivean Ocean County College Certificate ofCompletion and are eligible to sit for theNational Approved Veterinary Assistant NAVTAExam.
