Space prohibits mentioning every single person, group or occasion, but here are a few of the notable happenings of 2012:1Clinical Assistant Lauren Baker and Dr. Gus Galante, a plastic surgeon, donated a supplyof new and gently used bras for the homeless and at-risk women of Sojourner TruthHouse. The donation is part of Galante’s partnership with an organization known asBreast Oasis. Bras donated to Galante’s Schererville office are inspected, sorted andlaundered for packaging and delivery to charitable organizations in Northwest Indiana.Ten community leaders were recognized as winners of the 2012 Southshore LeadershipAward, and our own Sister Peg was one of them! “I would not be getting this awardwere it not for my wonderful staff, volunteers and board members,” she said. JEOPARDYAnswersDear Friends,There was a key moment last year that crystallizedmy appreciation for all the support we received in2012. It was the day we finished putting up our“Wall of Fame” in the lobby of Sojourner TruthHouse. We were getting the place spruced up for abig celebration, and we wanted to have our donor’snames displayed up on the walls as people came in.We painted the cinderblock and affixed a Lucitedisplay frame around the perimeter of the lobby.Underneath the Lucite were the hundreds of namesof the donors who supported us through 2011.When it was finished, I stood back and admiredthe display. It seemed to me at that moment that the staff, volunteers and clients of Sojourner Truth Housereally were enclosed in a circle of love. Just as thenames of our donors encircled our walls, we hadbeen encircled all year with the gifts, the prayers, and the hours of service provided by you, ourwonderful donors. Then, again in 2012, you protected the programsthat feed hungry and homeless women and children;you came out and walked for us and with us in May;you made sure that Sojourner Truth House was asafe place to come for women with nowhere elseto turn. We felt protected, cared for loved. Each year, the list of names grows longer. The circleof love and protection expands over time. If yousupported Sojourner Truth House in 2012, considerthis: you could have drawn a circle that shut us out,but you drew a big circle that took us in. While thatmay say something good about Sojourner TruthHouse, it really says something great about you.Living in gratitude,Sister Peg Spindler, CSASojourner Truth House Executive Director1.A feeling that what is wanted can behad or that events will turn out forthe best2.24,1443.10% more than 20114.The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ5.Your email address6.A library, a child enrichmentcenter and the PhenomenalWomen Sisterhood7.Lakeshore Radio, FM 89.1 andWJOB AM 12308.Isabella Baumfree9.www.walkforsth.org10. 3In 2003, Susan Cohen initiated our first Womenade event withthe goal of bringing together local women in an atmosphere ofgenerosity and hospitality to assist Sojourner Truth House—women helping women. The most recent Womanade event washeld last summer at People’s Bank in Hobart. These get-togethersare graciously hosted by an individual or a group. Women dineand establish lasting relationships while the men pour the wine. It’s a great opportunity to get to know others in the NWI areaand learn more about the challenges faced by the women STHserves. Want to host a Womenade event? Contact: Lillian Beasleyat lbeasley@sojournertruthhouse.org. Womenade funds are heldby Legacy Foundation, Inc. and distributed to Sojourner TruthHouse as the need arises.Executives from First Midwest Bank visited Sojourner TruthHouse recently to deliver personal items for our clients. Twentyfive bags full of soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste andother items will be greatly appreciated by clients who struggle topurchase these items when food must take a priority. We thankFirst Midwest Bank for their continued support and applaud theircommunity involvement.4(2012 was a great year!, continued from page 1)Peg was nominated by Connie Kann, class member of LeadershipNorthwest Indiana 32. “From the beginning,” Kann wrote, “shehas had the vision for helping homeless and working poor, maintaining the mission as a village of hope.” The ceremony anddinner, held at the Avalon Manor Banquet Center in Merrillville, included hundreds of guests, with LNI Executive Director KeithKirkpatrick serving as master of ceremonies.2012 saw the launch of the Reading Corner at Sojourner TruthHouse, made possible by an anonymous donation in honor ofWilliam L. “Stormy” Sims. More than 1000 new books and 300gently used titles were provided for our clients to check out, andthe list is growing! Our library contains fiction, non-fiction andchildren’s books, and our two librarians, Gail and Wanda, areclients as well.PHOTO CAPTIONS(1) From left to right: Clinical Assistant Lauren Baker, Dr. Gus Galante andLillian Beasley (2) Sister Peg Spindler (left) pictured with Harry J. An Alarming TrendThese numbers tell a sobering story. Gary, Indiana’s official unemployment rate is 15.9 percent, but according to GaryMayor Karen Freeman-Wilson in her State of the City Address, the true rate is more like 30 – 40 percent, when figuringin people who stopped looking for work or never had a job. Unemployment is one of the major causes of poverty andhomelessness. While Sojourner Truth House serves women from all across Lake County, Indiana, the epicenter of theneed is felt most acutely in Gary. As the above numbers indicate, the demand for Sojourner Truth House services isaccelerating rapidly. We can only keep up if you stand with us in the coming months. We are truly grateful for those whosupport us financially!Save the Date and Register Today!Back for its 14th year, the Walk for Sojourner Truth House is set for June 8, 2013 atFroebel Alumni Park in Gary, Indiana. Start a team.join a team.or just donate tosomeone talking the Walk; whichever way you choose, you’ll be helping the thousandsof women and children who come to Sojourner Truth House every month. It’s soeasy.you can register right now by going to www.walkforsth.org. Show your supportand join us June 8! 04 2012 STH Annual Report.indd 44/23/13 3:39 PM
