Welcome to UMUC EuropeThis academic year, UMUC Europe celebrates 70 years of providing education services to the militarycommunity at 50 locations in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. UMUC is also ending one era andbeginning a new, exciting chapter. On 1 July 2019, the university legally changed its name from the Universityof Maryland University College (UMUC) to the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC). The new nameaffirms our position as a state university with a global footprint consisting of 165 locations around the world.While the UMGC name became legally effective in July, the launch of the new name will occur in phasesthroughout the coming year, when you will then see changes to our website, social media sites, and printmaterials. For this year's UMUC Europe academic catalogs, we opted to use our former name, as our websiteand other print materials will continue to use this name and acronym for some time. Nonprogram coursesBecause UMUC graduate students often entergraduate study with academic backgrounds in verydifferent fields and return to study after a gap of manyyears, UMUC offers a number of courses outside theusual required program courses that are designed tohelp you succeed in your graduate studies. Completecourse descriptions are provided on pp. 65-77.Required Introductory CourseUCSP 615 Orientation to Graduate Studies at UMUC isdesigned to help you develop the skills and techniquesyou need to understand and manage the challengesinvolved in successfully completing a graduate programat UMUC and to familiarize you with research strategiesand online library resources—material that is criticalfor 21st-century professionals.This noncredit course is required for all new master’sMore is expected at the graduate level than what isnormally required at the undergraduate level. In addition,you usually must complete special requirements at theend of your graduate program. UMUC’s master’s degreeprograms require you to complete an integrativeend-of-program capstone course in which you mustdemonstrate mastery of content covered throughoutthe program. At the doctoral level, UMUC requires you tocomplete a dissertation.As long as you are continuously enrolled, you should referto the catalog of the year in which you began graduatestudy for the specific requirements related to your programof study. Continuous enrollment is defined on p. 21.degree students, except those in programs thatrequire CBR 600, DCL 600, or PRO 600. At thesuccessful conclusion of the course, a grade ofS (Satisfactory) or U (Unsatisfactory) is posted; themark of I (Incomplete) is not an option. UCSP 615 mustbe completed within the first 6 credits of graduatestudy. It is recommended that you take this as yourfirst course before beginning program coursework.Optional Noncredit CoursesNoncredit courses (currently designated UCSP or ASC)are available in computer programming, financialaccounting, information technology, writing, andresearch methods and generally last five to eightIn all programs, you must maintain a term and cumulativeweeks. Although these courses carry no UMUCgrade point average (GPA) of 3.0 to remain in good academiccredit, they appear on your official academicstanding; in some, you must also earn a grade of B or bettertranscript. At the conclusion of the course, a gradein each class to progress to the next class. Academic progressof S (Satisfactory) or U (Unsatisfactory) is posted;is assessed at the end of each term. Other requirements—the mark of I (Incomplete) is not an option.
