UMKC Department of Chemistry Profile 2018-2019The Department of Chemistry offers an American Chemical Society (ACS) approved andaccredited Bachelor of Science in Chemistry degree program, which our majors receive uponthe completion of the requirements. UMKC and Rockhurst University have the only ACSapproved programs in the greater Kansas City area. The program bullet points are listed ernance/committees/training/acsapproved.htmlACS Approval ProgramACS Promotes excellence in chemistry education for undergraduate students through approvalof baccalaureate chemistry programs. ACS approved programs offer a broad based and rigorouschemistry education that gives students intellectual, experimental, and communication skills tobecome effective scientific professionals.Benefits of an approved program Institutions with an ACS approved chemistry program attract top high school talent.Approved departments are staffed by accomplished faculty, containing a modern andwell-maintained infrastructure, and provides a coherent chemistry curriculumEmployers find graduate of approved programs to be better prepared for technicalemployment.Approval process provides a mechanism for department program evaluation, in order toidentify areas of strengths and opportunities for change, and leverage support fromtheir institutions and external agencies.GUIDELINES FOR PROGRAM APPROVAL AND STUDENT CERTIFICATION1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.Goals of Program Approval and Student CertificationInstitutional EnvironmentFaculty and StaffInfrastructureCurriculumUndergraduate ResearchDevelopment of Student SkillsProgram Self-EvaluationCertification of GraduatesACS Guidelines for Bachelor’s Degree Programs (pdf)5

UMKC Department of Chemistry Profile 2018-2019Health and SafetyIt is critical that the Chemistry Department upholds the guidelines of health and safety listedChemical Management Plan, set forth by the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Department,in cooperation with the Region 7 EPA. The plan contains the approved treatment protocols forlaboratory neutralization of accepted hazardous materials. Developed by EHS, to ensure thesafe and proper use of hazardous and nonhazardous chemicals and to comply with applicablegovernmental regulations addressing the disposal of these chemicals. In addition, it wasdesigned to foster waste minimization, and to provide the faculty and the staff with amanagement program to reduce the potential for accidents involving hazardous chemicalsand/or /ChemicalManagementPlanWord06202016.pdfElements of the CMP include: A procedure for identifying potential or actual hazardous chemicals or wastesA procedure for periodic reexamination of those hazardous chemicals or wastesidentified by the procedure in (a.) above as well as a systematic method foridentification and evaluation of any new potential or actual hazardous chemicals orwastesProcedures for labeling, and inventorying hazardous chemicals or wastesA procedure for identification and training of personnel directly responsible for ensuringthat (a.), (b.), and (c.) are implementedA procedure for monitoring, recording, and reporting compliance with the CMPA procedure by which information generated by the CMP is provided to the personsperforming waste analyses each element is addressed as part of the complete CMP inthe following paragraphs.ResearchOur research spans from synthetic methodology development to total synthesis of biologicallyactive molecules, from fundamental studies of organic, inorganic, and polymeric materials totheir applications as sustainable energy materials and biomedical materials, from theoreticaland computational studies to spectroscopic explorationsResearch faculty continue to gain national and international attention by performing cuttingedge, scientific research that leads to real-world applications. Our department is small enoughto facilitate mentorship while still producing renowned research across various disciplines.Part of UMKC’s mission as a research institution is to engage students in research projects. Weare proud of the fact that our undergraduate chemistry students are able to enhance theircollege experience by participating in research projects.6

UMKC Department of Chemistry Profile 2018-2019Strategic Planning GoalsGOAL A- Excellence in Graduate EducationStrategies1. Enhance Research2. Expand resources3. Professional Development for Students4. Career development of graduate students5. UMKC Department of Chemistry Profile 2018-2019Goal B: Growing Excellence in Undergraduate ProgramsStrategies1. Enhance Bachelors Curriculum2. Expand/review online curriculum possibilitiesActions Explore Specialties/Emphasis/Interest areas with BA/BS Ensure Faculty Review/oversight/accountability Consult with Professional Schools and local businesscommunities Conduct student satisfaction surveys Explore Combined Chemistry BS/MS degreeo MDHE Approval needed. Explore one-year certificate program (15-18 credits) in LabSafety/Lab Management for students who are done withCHEM BA but still trying to get into medical or dentalprogramso MDHE Approval needed. Reinvigorate Chemistry Club Reinstate Honors General Chemistry as 1 semester course (5credits, CHEM 211 and 212R with 2 credits, CHEM 211L and212LR) or 2 semesters. Explore ways to reinstate recitation with general chemistry. Consider making Lab Safety (CHEM 311) a required coursefor all or at least required component of all lab courses. Review of potential opportunitieso CHEM 206-on-goingo CHEM 115/115L: Home lab kits?o CHEM 390o Other?Work with UMKC Online programCollect student input to know needs 3. Enhance undergraduate research opportunities Explore opportunities within the Dept.Engage community regarding researchopportunities/internships4. Support diversity recruitment and retention Work with admissions and recruitmentEngage in minority high school/transfer recruitmentWork with area organizations like the Hispanic Chamber ofCommerce, Latinos of Tomorrow, Inroads, the UMKCDiversity and Inclusion OfficeMentoringAcquire electrochemical instrumentation for undergraduateuse and integrate in CHEM 341WI, 345R, and/or 437WI.Utilize the Assessment Plan we are currently undertaking toexplore the rigor across same courses (semester to semesterand semester to summer).5. Compliance with ACS for ACS-approved BSdegree 8

UMKC Department of Chemistry Profile 2018-2019 Develop criteria for students who conduct undergraduateresearch for credit (CHEM 399 or 499) to include:Standardize number of hours in lab per week per credit hourenrolled in (i.e., 3 hours per week in lab for each creditenrolled in).Require the submission of a final research paper that utilizesthe ACS Committee on Professional Training “Preparing aResearch Report” as the standard for paper design.Develop a standard rubric that is used to assess the student’sfinal research report.Utilize UMKC Writing Studio.Require final paper and rubric to be submitted toDepartment for ACS Report.Ensure compliance with the ACS’s MSN Requirement by oneof the following:o Remove “Upper Level Elective from CHEM-BS andrequire CHEM 471 (Introduction to PolymerChemistry) instead-May cost us double majors inBiology and Physics.Redesign CHEM 367 to include 2 of the required topics. Mayalso redesign CHEM 341WI, 382, 442R to include lecture andlab materials in these areas. GOAL C- Faculty and Staff Development/Department MarketingStrategies1. Professional Development for New FacultyActions Improve the communication regarding the expectations ofnew faculty Develop a “new faculty” manual which provides bothdepartment and university resourceso Teaching and mentoring graduate studentso University “Quicklinks” and FAQso Information about grant writing, FACET, UMRB,SEARCH, SYRUPo Evaluation completion information and guidelineso University and department academic timelines anddue dateso Syllabi content including syllabi exampleso MyVITA instructionso Annual HR mandatory trainingso New faculty “to-do list”o EHS Chemical Safety Trainingo Annual department training Provide Pathway and Blackboard training9
