All other students are required to consult with anadvisor for a substantial conference during a designatedterm each year. Students whose ID numbers end in aneven digit are required to meet with an advisor duringfall semester. Students whose ID numbers end in an odddigit are required to meet with an advisor during springsemester. However, Engineering students are encouragedto consult regularly with their major advisor during eachsemester of the academic year, especially if they plan toparticipate in internship or co-op positions that mightafect class scheduling.The Engineering Advising Ofce delivers academicadvising on an appointment basis. To make anappointment, use the e-mail link sent to you toschedule using Navigate.Academic ProbationA student will be placed on Academic Probation when(1) his/her cumulative GPA falls below the minimumacceptable level of 2.0 for one semester or (2) thesemester GPA falls below the minimum acceptable levelof 2.0 two consecutive terms of enrollment. During thesemester that a student is placed on Academic Probation,and any other semesters in Academic Probation, a studentmust participate in a special directive advising programto help the student address concerns that are impactinghis/her academic performance and to outline a planfor achieving academic success. While on AcademicProbation, students must have met with an advisor priorto registering for all following terms, which includessummer term. This model of early intervention is designedto help students regroup and position themselves foracademic success. Students on Academic Probationstatus during a term will automatically be dismissed at theend of that term if both: The cumulative GPA is below a 2.0, and The term GPA is below a 2.0For frst-time, frst-year, and transfer students, the summerterm prior to their frst fall term will not be included in thedismissal decision.A student will no longer be on Academic Probationwhen his or her cumulative grade point average is 2.0 orhigher and the term grade point average is 2.0 or higher.This policy is in place in recognition of the University ofTennessee, Knoxville’s minimum grade point average of2.0 for graduation.Advising appointments are normally oferedon 30-45-minute individual intervals. How is College Life Diferent from High School?Engineering AdvisingPersonal Freedom in High SchoolYou may be able to join many clubs and activities whiletaking classes.You must be selective in your participation choices to avoidoverextending yourself.Your time is usually structured by others.You manage your own time.Guiding principle: You will usually be told what yourresponsibilities are and corrected if your behavior isout of line.Guiding Principle: You are old enough to take responsibilityfor what you do and don’t do, as well as for theconsequences of your decisions.High School ClassesProfessional Advisor — Assist students in thedevelopment of educational plans that are consistentwith their aspirations, interests, and strengths;encourage students’ holistic engagement (academically,socially, culturally, and professionally) with thecollege experience. Educate students about curricularrequirements, academic standards/policies related toa chosen major. Guide students through career andprofessional development opportunities available. Assiststudents with course planning, academic forms, andtechnologies such as DARS, MyUTK, Grades First, andHandshake.Faculty — Reinforce academic strategies to besuccessful in the major. Discuss faculty research in themajor, preparation for graduate school interests, careeropportunities in major feld, collaborate with professionaladvisors on specifc student issues. Discuss major specifccourse content, technical electives in the major, andconcentrations and/or minors for the major.4Tickle College of EngineeringCareer Counselor — Guide students through selfexploration process that includes strengths, interests,abilities, and challenges relating those to the world ofwork and goals in higher education. Assisting studentsin developing educational plans that are consistent withacademic and career goals. Refer to campus resourcesthat support career exploration, experience learning,and leadership opportunities. Guide students throughdeveloping resume and interview skills.Transition Advisor — Advising and creating newacademic plans for students no longer meeting majorrequirements and are required to change majors/colleges.Advising new prospective and transfer students whoare not admitted to the college of their choice. Advisingstudents and creating new academic plans with studentswho want to change colleges/majors but are unclear asto their new academic/career goals.College ClassesYou spend 6 hours each day—30 hours a week—in class.You spend 12 to 16 hours each week in class.The school year is 3
