College EssaysThe purpose of a college admission essay is to showcase yourpersonality– to let the reader see what’s inside you. You’vealready listed your achievements in your college application, souse your essay to show admissions who you are and why youbelong at that particular college or university.s The Personal Statement is our best means of getting to know you andyour best means of creating a context for your academicperformance. Some of the best essays are written as personal stories& we welcome your imaginative interpretation. The Short Response or “Cultural” Essay is designed to showcase yourunique “Cultural” experiences in a broad sense. Be creative! Use Additional Comments section to talk about any discrepancies ingrades, etc.

Personal Statement (500-650 words) The Personal Statement is our best means of getting toknow you and your best means of creating a context foryour academic performance. Tell us about those aspects of your life that are notapparent from your academic record. Tell us about theexperiences that don’t show up on your transcript: A character-defining momentThe cultural awareness you’ve developedA challenge facedA personal hardship or barrier overcomeJust talk about yourself!!!

Short Response “Cultural” Essay (250500 words) The University of Washington seeks to create acommunity of students richly diverse in culturalbackgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints. Howwould you contribute to this community? Describe an experience of cultural difference orinsensitivity you have had or observed. What did youlearn from it? Culture includes (but isn’t limited to) race/ethnicity,customs, values and ideas, all of which contribute toexperiences that students can share with others incollege.

Journal of Activities/Achievements(100-200 words for each activity) Identify and describe up to five of your most significantactivities and achievements during grades 9-12 Write about why this activity or achievement had meaningfor you.
