6History of NMSU-AlamogordoNew Mexico State University at Alamogordo (NMSU-A) issituated in the foothills, at the base of the SacramentoMountains. This vantage point overlooks the city ofAlamogordo and the Tularosa Basin. The service area of theschool includes Holloman Air Force Base (HAFB), WhiteSands Missile Range, and stretches beyond the view toinclude the Mescalero Apache Reservation andapproximately twenty villages and towns. Much of the southcentral New Mexico region benefits from the convenientlocation of the campus.NMSU-A was established in 1958 with an initial enrollmentof 278 students. The classes were held at night on theAlamogordo High School campus. The objective of thispost-secondary educational venture was to serve the militaryand civilian personnel from HAFB, as well as students fromthe local non-military population.Over the years enrollment has expanded to a presentpopulation of over 1800 students. At the same time, thenumber and the character of students' objectives have alsogrown. The basic two-year traditional university-creditededucation has been expanded and enriched. NMSU-A hasevolved from offering only two-year traditional educationcourses to providing occupational/technical programs andcourses for personal enrichment as well as selected bachelorcompletion programs through NMSU-Las Cruces DistanceEducation.NMSU-A is a two-year community college campusdedicated to the concept of high-quality, cost-effectiveeducation that meets the needs of a diverse community.While some students continue to value the long establishedcore courses, others are seeking alternatives to thetraditional liberal arts education. Every possible effort isbeing made at NMSU-A to keep programs and curriculaflexible in order to accommodate varied and expandingcommunity educational needs.Mission of the CollegeThe mission of New Mexico State University atAlamogordo is to provide quality learning opportunities forindividuals in the diverse communities we serve.AccreditationNMSU-A is accredited by the North Central Association ofColleges and Schools. The latest accreditation visit to thecampus by the Higher Learning Commission of the NorthCentral Association was in April 2003. The Nursing Program isapproved by the New Mexico State Board of Nursing andholds accreditation from the National League of Nursing.The National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission(NLNAC) is a resource of information for the NMSU-ANursing Program and can be contacted at NLNAC, 61Broadway, New York, NY 10006;(212) 363-5555, ext. 153, Fax: (212) 812-0390, or via theInternet at www.nlnac.org.NMSU CampusesThe purposes of NMSU’s community college campuses areto make two years of college education available to studentsin their home environment; to provide a high qualityprogram of education for all students, both full-time andpart-time; and to provide occupational education courses.The community colleges are operated by NMSU.The community colleges provide lower division courses ofthe same quality and kind as are offered on the Las Crucescampus. Courses offered for transfer credit are coordinatedwith the appropriate department and college at the LasCruces campus and can be transferred to other two-year andfour-year colleges and universities and are consistent withVeterans Administration and Social Security Administrationregulations. Students attending a community college ofNMSU are enrolled as New Mexico State Universitystudents and may change campuses if they meet Las Crucescampus admissions requirements.Associate’s DegreeGraduation RequirementsDesignated associate’s degree programs are offered at thecommunity college campuses for those desiring specializedtraining for employment. A General Studies AssociateDegree is available upon completion of 66 credits andENGL 111G with a C or better. The following degrees areadministered by the Alamogordo campus: Associate of Arts,Associate in Criminal Justice, Associate in Early Childhood,Associate in Education, Associate in Fine Arts, Associate inArts in Heritage Interpretation, Associate in MedicalLaboratory Technician, Associate in Nursing, Associate inScience, and Associate in Social Services. The Associate inPrebusiness Degree is administered by the College ofBusiness Administration. The following Associate inApplied Science Degrees are administered at theAlamogordo campus: 3D Computer Animation, BiomedicalElectronics Technology, Business Office TechnologyComputing, Electronics Apprenticeship, ElectronicsTechnology, Fire Science, Graphic Design, InformationTechnology, Medical Office Technology, OccupationalBusiness, Paralegal Studies, and TechnicalCommunications.Note: These degree plans are effective Summer, 2007and are in effect until the spring semester 2012.Candidates for these degrees must have a regular admissionstatus and have attained at least a 2.0 grade point average.Students must complete a minimum of 66 credit hours

GENERAL INFORMATION(excludes non-credit courses with the letter N suffix) ormore as specified in each degree. In addition, the final 15credit hours of an associate’s degree must be taken throughNMSU-A or any NMSU campus (cannot include CLEP,challenge exams, or transfer credit).
