COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF ALLEGHENY COUNTYPROGRAM OVERVIEW & ACCREDITATIONThe Nursing program at the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) is offered at fivesites: CCAC Allegheny Campus, CCAC Boyce Campus, CCAC North Campus, CCAC SouthCampus and the CCAC off-campus site at California University of Pennsylvania. It is a two-yearprogram leading to an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and includes courses in nursing, liberalarts and sciences. Students who earn this associate degree are prepared for entry-level positions andare educated to provide care in current and emerging health care delivery systems. Those whosuccessfully complete the program also earn the opportunity to sit for the National CouncilLicensure Examination (NCLEX-RN), which qualifies individuals to practice professional nursing.The CCAC Nursing program is fully approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing and isaccredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc., located at 3343Peachtree Road NE, Suite 850, Atlanta, GA 30326; phone: 404.975.5000; fax: 404.975.5020;acenursing.org.Opportunities for employment are available in a variety of settings. Students applying to or alreadyenrolled in the Nursing program must comply with the requirements of Pennsylvania’s TheProfessional Nursing Law.In order to practice nursing in the state of Pennsylvania, a license is required.Therefore, upon graduation from the Nursing program, graduates must sit for alicensure exam. Students must follow and sign the behavioral standards guidelineagreement (which accompanies the Nursing application).In addition, students must be in good standing and not on academic or disciplinary probation orsuspension. Students at the CCAC off-campus site at California University must be in good standingwith California University of Pennsylvania.MATRICULATION AND COURSE SEQUENCINGThere are specific prerequisite courses and co-requisite courses for all Nursing (NUR) courses.Students should refer to the college catalog for more information. It is the students’ responsibility toensure that they are enrolled in appropriate courses and in the appropriate sequencing of courses.Students who are unsuccessful or withdraw from a nursing course or co-requisite course during thesemester are required to notify the campus nursing office immediately. This may result in withdrawalfrom the nursing course or inability to proceed to the next level of nursing courses. Students whoare accepted into the Nursing program must take all co-requisites prior to or during the semester inwhich the course is designated. Failure to take or pass any of these courses with a “C” grade orbetter will result in the student’s inability to move on to the next nursing course.Page 1Revised February 2019

COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF ALLEGHENY COUNTYPROGRAM OF STUDIES OPTIONS FOR APPLICANTSSeveral options provide students the opportunity to enroll in the Nursing program on a full- or*part-time basis:1) The Day Option Students must be available five days per week. Classes begin as early as 6:30 a.m. and may continue until 5:00 p.m. Students may be required to attend class or fulfill laboratory/practicum time duringevening or weekend hours in order to meet program requirements or competencies.2) The Evening/Weekend Option Students must be available weekdays from 4:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and Saturdays andSundays from 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students may be required to attend class or fulfill laboratory/practicum time during dayhours in order to meet program requirements or competencies. It is recommended that all non-nursing courses be completed prior to the start of thefirst nursing (NUR) course. If the non-nursing courses are not completed, the studentmust have a well-researched plan to accomplish the needed courses.3) Fast Track—Available at Boyce Campus only This 18-month program includes a summer semester. Offered once per year during the fall semester. Students must be available weekdays from 2:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and Saturdays from7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Students may be required to attend class or fulfill laboratory/practicum time during dayhours in order to meet program requirements or competencies. It is recommended that all non-nursing courses be completed prior to the start of thefirst nursing (NUR) course. If the non-nursing courses are not completed, the studentmust have a well-researched plan to accomplish the needed courses. The prerequisite and other courses in this option are the same courses as contained inthe other options.*The full-time vs. part-time designation refers to the number of credits a student is enrolled induring each semester. Students who are enrolled in less than 12 credits per semester are consideredpart-time. Any student who prefers to complete the Nursing program on a part-time basis shouldplan to complete all co-requisites (non-NUR courses) prior to admission to the program. COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF ALLEGHENY COUNTYCCAC NURSING PROGRAM APPLICATION PROCESSSTEP 1—COMPLETE A CCAC COLLEGE APPLICATION TO THE CAMPUS OF YOUR CHOICE CAL U applicants must apply to and be accepted to CAL U before being eligible for entryinto the CCAC at CAL U program.STEP 2—HAVE TRANSCRIPTS SENT Students must request official transcripts from all previously attended schools, includinghigh schools, colleges, universities, graduate/professional schools, LPN schools and businessschools.a. Official transcripts must be sent to a CCAC Admissions office.b. Failure to submit previous transcripts is falsification of records and will be handledunder the guidelines of the Student Code of Conduct.c. Students should ensure that official copies of all transcripts have been received priorto submitting a nursing application.d. All students are required to submit a copy of their final, official high schooltranscript. If transferring credits, students must request an Application for Credit Transfer, which isavailable at any CCAC Registration and Advisement office or at ccac.edu, searchkeywords “application for credit transfer.” This application should be submitted to theAdmissions office at the campus on which the transcript was received. Acceptance to the college does not guarantee admission to the Nursing program. International students/students who have completed coursework outside of theUnited States must complete the following steps:a. High school transcripts must either be evaluated through a foreign transcriptevaluation service such as Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) or WorldEducation Services (WES), or the student may obtain a GED/Secondary EducationDiploma. This may be accomplished via GED testing or by meeting therequirements and applying for the 30 College Credit option sponsored by thePennsylvania Department of Education.b. Students attempting to use a high school chemistry course from a foreign highschool must have the high school transcript evaluated through a foreign transcriptevaluation service. In this case, the GED/Secondary Education Diploma would notbe sufficient.c. Students attempting to transfer college-level credits to CCAC must have theirtranscripts evaluated through a foreign transcript evaluation service. Applications forcredit transfer must also be submitted by the student.d. All official transcript evaluation reports, applications for credit transfer, officialGED/Secondary education diplomas, etc., must be submitted to a CCACadmissions office no later than the application deadline for the semester in which thestudent is applying.STEP 3—TAKE THE COLLEGE PLACEMENT TESTS FOR ENGLISH, READING OR MATH (IFAPPLICABLE) Upon acceptance to the college, if a student has not completed college-level English,reading or math courses at another institution or does not have the minimum requiredPage 4Revised February 2019

Studentsreceive placement test information upon admission to CCAC.STEP 4—MEET WITH AN ADVISOR An advisor will review the student’s educational and vocational records, discuss interests,assess the results of college placement tests and provide guidance. Specific informationregarding when to apply to the program should be discussed.STEP 5—COMPLETE DEVELOPMENTAL COURSES (IF APPLICABLE) All developmental courses, if the need was indicated by placement testing, must becompleted. Students who have enrolled in the same developmental course more thanthree times will not be considered for acceptance to the Nursing program. “W” and “I”grades count as an enrollment. Students will need to complete all required developmental courses as indicated byplacement examination with a “C” grade or better prior to application to the Nursingprogram. These courses may include: MAT 080 Fundamentals of Arithmetic; MAT 090Fundamentals of Algebra; ENG 089 Basic Writing Techniques; ENG 100 Principles ofComposition; DVS 060 College Academic Strategies; DVS 070 College Reading 1; DVS 101College Reading 2; or DVS 103 Advanced College Reading and Study Skills. Students who have enrolled in the same science course more than three times will not beconsidered for acceptance to the Nursing program. “W” and “I” grades count as anenrollment.Exceptions to this policy may only be made by the Dean of Nursing. Students must apply tothe program and follow the normal application review process. Decisions of this type will bemade on an individual basis and will only be considered if the student meets all of thefollowing conditions:1.) The course in question was taken 10 or more years prior to application.2.) The student has demonstrated mastery of developmental English and reading with acollege-level English course and/or developmental math with a college-level math course.3.) The student’s transcripts in general reflect an upward trajectory.4.) The student meets all other admission criteria as stated in the admission policy.STEP 6—COMPLETE PREREQUISITES Students will need to complete college English, mathematics and reading placement tests asneeded. Students will need to complete all required developmental courses as indicated by placementexamination with a minimum of a “C” grade. Students will need to complete chemistry with a minimum of a “C” grade. High schoolchemistry can be used in the absence of a college-level chemistry course. Students will need to be eligible to begin BIO 161 Anatomy and Physiology 1.a. If BIO 161 Anatomy and Physiology 1, BIO 162 Anatomy and Physiology 2 or BIO 175Microbiology were completed prior to admission to the Nursing program, studentsmust have completed them with a “C” grade or better within the past 10 years.Page 5Revised February 2019

The successful candidate must complete any sciencesundertaken by the third attempt.Note: LPN to RN Transition Applicants are required to complete additional prerequisites (see p.8)STEP 7—TAKE THE TEAS EXAM All applicants must pass the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) with a minimumAdjusted Individual Total Score of 58.7%. Exam scores must be submitted by theapplication deadline for the semester in which the student is applying. Students may register for the exam through atitesting.com. Students who have taken the TEAS exam previously through another institution mustorder a transcript to be sent to CCAC. Transcripts must be received no later than theapplication deadline for the semester in which the student is applying.a. Scores earned more than two years prior to the date of application will not beconsidered. More information regarding the TEAS exam can be found on the CCAC NursingAdmissions page at ccac.edu/Admissions Nursing.aspx.STEP 8—COMPLETE THE NURSING PROGRAM ADMISSION/APPLICATION PROCESS Applications are available online at ccac.edu/Admissions Nursing/ during thedesignated application period. All prerequisites and courses needing to be repeated (see STEP 6) must be successfullycompleted prior to filing an application. For consideration for admission, students must provide the following items to theirRegistration office:a. Copies of official high school transcripts or GED certificate. Please ensure that CCAChas received a copy of the final transcript with actual graduation date and final grades.b. Copies of official college transcripts from each previously attended institutionc. Application for Credit Transfer (if applicable) for each previously attended institutiond. Acceptance letter from CCAC or verification of acceptance. This is only required in theevent that a student is not currently matriculating.e. College placement test results and/or SAT/ACT scoresf. College Board scores for students requesting college credit for high school AP courses(Placement tests taken through CCAC need not be submitted)g. Students must meet one of the following GPA requirements: A cumulative 2.8 GPA minimum for a student who has earned 12 or more collegelevel credits through CCAC at the time of application A 2.8 GPA minimum for a student who has not earned 12 or more college-levelcredits through CCAC but has earned 12 or more credits at other post-secondaryinstitutions (this GPA will be a composite score representing all institutionsattended) A 3.0 GPA minimum from the secondary school (high school) for a student withless than 12 credits at a two- or four-year post-secondary institution(s)h. Submit a nursing program application online at ccac.edu/Admissions Nursing/c. Submit an official copy of all transcripts to each institution. For CCAC, transcriptsand applications for credit transfer must be submitted to Stephanie Sheets:Stephanie SheetsCalifornia University of PennsylvaniaMorgan Hall RM 305250 University Ave, Box 60California, PA 15419Applicants must provide a letter or other verification of acceptance from both CCAC andCAL U along with the nursing application materials.STEP 9—SUBMIT NURSING ADMISSION APPLICATION PACKET Ensure that all of the aforementioned forms (in STEP 8) have been received by thestudent’s Admissions office. Submit the signed application/behavioral standards guideline form no later than the endof business on the deadline date. All files will be sent electronically to the Nursing Application Center. Only students with completed Nursing admission application files and completed admissionrequirements will be considered for review. Any students with incomplete Nursingadmission application files will not be considered. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all applications/necessary documentation arereceived by CCAC. Applications will only be accepted during the designatedapplication periods.STEP 10—DECISION PROCESS Students will be notified initially via email regarding their acceptance or denial from theprogram within 2 1/2 months from the time of application. Official notification letters will also be mailed from the CCAC Nursing Dean's Office onceapplication reviews have been completed. Students who are denied admission have the opportunity to appeal. Students will appealthrough the electronic application system using their CCAC Discover accounts. Appealsshould include the following information:o Reason that the student feels his/her application should be reconsidered.o What the student feels was overlooked.o Supplemental documentation (if applicable). An appeal deadline will be set for each term after the initial application review process hasbeen completed. All accepted students are tentatively admitted pending results of STEP 11 (backgroundcheck). Admitted students will have nine days from the date of their admission letter to confirmtheir seat in the program. COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF ALLEGHENY COUNTY All students admitted to the Nursing program will be required to attend registration eventsand a mandatory orientation. This orientation is usually scheduled during the week beforeclasses begin. Students will be notified by the respective campus regarding registration andorientation dates and times.A Nursing program student manual will be distributed at the orientation. All students mustbecome familiar with the guidelines and information in this manual.STEP 11—BACKGROUND CHECK Tentatively accepted students will receive information about obtaining a criminalbackground check/child abuse clearance/drug test. The Nursing program reserves the rightto deny admissions to any student deemed to have an unsatisfactory background check. Admitted students must comply with the rules and deadlines set forth governing thecompletion of the health, background and drug screenings. Failure to do so will result in theinability to begin the Nursing program. The student would then be required to reapply forthe following term.ADVANCED PLACEMENT FOR LPN to RN CANDIDATESLicensed Practical Nurses will be admitted directly into the first year, second semester, which isNUR 130 Basic Health Concepts for Nursing Practice and NUR 140 Evidenced Based Nursing Drug Therapy,without a transition course.LPNs with a valid, current Pennsylvania license will be given 8 credits for their earned degree (priorlearning) and will not have to take the following first year, first semester nursing courses: NUR 110Foundation/Health Promotion Concepts for Nursing Practice, 6 credits; and NUR 120 Health AssessmentConcepts for Nursing Practice, 2 credits. Students must, however, complete at least 30 credits at CCACin order to graduate. LPN students applying for entry into the Nursing program must meet the followingrequirements:a. Beginning with the Spring 2017 admission period, LPN to RN candidates arerequired to pass the TEAS exam (see STEP 7)b. Students must have a quality point average of 2.8 or greater from college transcripts.c. Students must have a current, valid LPN license in the state of Pennsylvania.d. Students must have completed high school or
