Dry-typesprinklers are typically used where: pendent sprinklers are re quiredon dry pipe systems that areexposed to freezing temperaturesfor example, sprinkler drops fromunheated portions of buildings sprinklers and/or a portion of theconnecting piping are exposed tofreezing temperatures; for example,sprinkler drops from wet sys temsinto freezers, sprinkler sprigs fromwet systems into unheated attics, orhorizontal piping extensions througha wall to protect an unheated areassuch as loading docks, overhangs,and building exteriorsauthorities having jurisdiction. Failureto do so may impair the performanceof these de vices.The owner is responsible for maintain ing their fire protection system andde vices in proper operating condi tion. NPT AND ISO 7-R 1 DRY-TYPE SPRINKLERASSEMBLYOperationWhen the TYCO Series DS-1 Dry-TypeSprinklers, 5.6K Pendent, Upright, andHorizontal Sidewall, Quick Response(3 mm bulb) and Standard Coverageare in service, water is prevented fromentering the assembly by the Plug withSealing Assembly in the Inlet of theSprinkler. See Figures 1 and 2.The glass bulb contains a fluid thatexpands when exposed to heat. Whenthe rated temperature is reached, thefluid expands sufficiently to shatterthe glass Bulb, and the Bulb Seat isreleased.The compressed Spring is then ableto expand and push the Water Tube aswell as the Guide Tube outward. Thisaction simultaneously pulls inward onthe Yoke, withdrawing the Plug withSealing Assembly from the Inlet andallowing the sprin kler to activate andflow water.DesignCriteriaThe TYCO Series DS-1 Dry-Type Sprinklers, 5.6K Pendent, Upright, and Horizontal Sidewall, Quick Response(3 mm bulb) and Standard Coverage are intended for use in fire sprinkler systems designed in accordancewith the standard installation rulesrecognized by the applicable Listingor Approval agency; for example,UL Listing is based on NFPA 13requirements.Sprinkler FittingsInstall the 3/4 or 1 in. NPT SeriesDS-1 Dry-Type Sprinklers in the 3/4or 1 in. NPT outlet or run of the following fittings: malleable or ductile iron threadedtee fittings that meet the dimensional requirements of ANSI B16.3(Class 150) cast iron threaded tee fittings thatmeet the dimensional requirementsof ANSI B16.4 (Class 125)Do not install the DS-1 Sprinklersinto an elbow fittings. The Inlet of thesprinkler can contact the interior of theelbow, potentially damaging the Inletseal.The unused outlet of the threaded tee isplugged as shown in Figure 13.You can also install the Series DS-1Dry-Type Sprinklers in the 3/4 or 1 in.NPT outlet of a GRINNELL Figure 730Mechanical Tee. However, the use ofthe Figure 730 Tee for this arrangementis limited to wet pipe systems.
