20th Sunday in Ordinary TimeAugust 14, 20223The Call to be a ProphetThe Reading for this 20th Sunday, could be jarringto our ears. If we feel so, then we must pay closeattention to our call to be prophets. We who havebeen confirmed have been given a share in Christ’sprophetic anointing. If our goal is to be everybody’s‘likeable fellow’, we are going to have a hard timebeing faithful. The word that God commands us toshare is sometimes comforting, sometimesdisturbing. We must get over our fear of offendingpeople and love them enough to tell them the truth.Of course, there is always the question of the rightplace and time. But if no place is the right place andthe right time never comes, we can be sure that weare allowing fear of other’s opinion to get in the wayof love. Love is not about being sentimental orpopular. It shakes things up and sets the world onfire.Today’s readings remind us that God at times usessome direct and terse language to bring attention totruth. The reason for this is that God is love, and loveis more concerned about the welfare of others thanwith one’s own image just like parents who want thebest for their children at the risk of not ‘agreeing withthem’. So, if some fun-loving travelers are on aseemingly pleasant canoe ride down a lazy river, love cares enough to warn them that a huge fall isup ahead. “Everyone is free to choose!” But opinionsdon’t change the fact that going over the falls in acanoe will kill you.In the first reading of today, Jeremiah is persecutedby the mighty and powerful because he is not beingpolitically correct. Around the year 587 before Christ, the city of Jerusalem was besieged byNebuchadnezzar. People were suffering. But thearmy generals kept the war going aggravating thesituation of the people. Jeremiah was the lonelyvoice that was putting pressure on King Zedekiah tosurrender to reduce the suffering of the people. Butthis was not politically correct; it threatened thepride of the army. So, Jeremiah is thrown into a drywell to silence him. It takes the courage of ansolution to the loss of sense of sin is not a guiltyconscience, but a rightful acceptance of theresistance within us that refuses to allow the grace ofGod to flow within us. The second reading of todayfrom the Letter to the Hebrews invites us to “fightagainst sin” as we “keep running steadily in the racethat we have started” (Heb 12:1). This fight against sin isnot just the obedience to the commandments, butsomething deeper than that. The Letter to theHebrews tells us, “Let us not lose sight of Jesus, wholeads us in our faith and brings it to perfection” (Heb12:2).Obedience to the law could make uscomplacent, but the journey towards perfectiondisturbs us. It is a challenge to “keep running steadily.”St. Theresa of Kolkata would often say: ‘God calls us tobe faithful, not just successful.’The reality of opposition to the Gospel in ourcontemporary society is intensifying on a daily basiswith nascent frontiers. In families, towns, and politicalgatherings and even at the international stage; peopleare renewing their strength and vigor at resisting thetruth of the Gospel with new theories and attitudes;and even subjecting the ministers of the Gospel tovaried forms of suffering and blackmail. This indeed ispartly the cause of the divisions our Lord talks aboutin the Gospel Reading (Luke 12:49-53). The divisionthat arises from the encounter between the force ofthe eternal truth of the Word of God and the force ofopposition to this truth. These divisions exist amongus; not because the purpose of the Word is primarilyto bring division in our midst, but because we haverefused to allow the Word of God to yield the fruits itshould by listening to it. The following prayer is for allof us who shy away from being authentic prophets intrying times:Disturb us, Lord, whenWith the abundance of things we possessWe have lost our thirstFor the waters of life;Having fallen in love with life,We have ceased to dream of eternityAnd in our efforts to build a new earth,We have allowed our visionOf the new Heaven to dim.Sir Francis DrakeerFr Tom Kunnel, C.O.Ethiopian, Ebed-melech who too prefers to bepolitically incorrect to let the king know thatsilencing the prophet was not right. Jeremiah isrescued.Pope Pius XII in 1946, warned us about “thesin of the century”: the loss of sense of sin. TheSt Philip Neri's maxim for August 14 :They who have been exercised in the service of God for a long time, may in their prayers imagine all sorts of insults offered tothem, such as blows, wounds, and the like, and so in order to imitate Christ by their charity, may accustom their heartsbeforehand to forgive real injuries when they come.

Not as the world gives do I give it to you.” The peacethat Jesus gives is far different than the kind that comes fromthe absence of war, conflict, or affliction. The peace that Godoffers is found alongside suffering and hardship, notnecessarily in their absence. St. Teresa of Avila offers us a bit ofwisdom regarding peace: “May today there be peace within.May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant tobe. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born offaith. May you use those gifts that you have received and passon the love that has been given to you. May you be contentknowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle intoyour bones and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise, and love. It is there for each and every one of us.”In order for us to experience the divine peace that Jesus offers,we have to allow God’s presence to settle into our bones! It isonly when this happens that we can be truly taught by the HolySpirit to discern the true path to peace and find ourselves withuntroubled hearts. The world and our lives are sounpredictable and changeable. If we look for a source oflasting and real peace only there, our search will never besatisfied. Something will always unsettle and disturb us. TheJewish disciples could really relate to what Jesus was sayingabout peace (shalom). They already knew that it was more amatter of achieving wholeness and wellbeing than anythingelse.Wholeness and wellbeing are precisely what isuncovered when we begin to really see and know theLink on our websiteheight, depth, and breadth of God’s presence andpromise. ¿Has defendido losvalores del Evangelio?
