About the Universityof the CumberlandsA Brief HistoryIn 1888, a group of Baptist ministers founded a smallcollege in Kentucky known as the WilliamsburgInstitute for the purpose of preparing young adultsfor lives as servant leaders. In 1913, following theacquisition of Highland College, Cumberland Collegewas born. The school became the University of theCumberlands in 2005.Undaunted by wars, economic depressions, socialunrest and natural disasters, University of theCumberlands has continuously served studentsprimarily, but not exclusively, from the beautifulAppalachian mountain regions of Kentucky,Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia, Georgia, NorthCarolina, South Carolina, Ohio and Alabama. Now,thanks to the welcome addition of online learning,the University’s doors are open to students from allover the world.The school’s vision for providing higher education inan underserved area caught the eye of men like JohnD. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie, both of whomsupported the institution. Cumberlands has producedtwo governors, five military generals, an admiral, fivecollege and university presidents, a Congressman,ministers, missionaries, legislators, judges and more.Ten presidents have served Cumberlands, includingWilliam James Johnson, E. E. Wood, John NewtonPrestridge, Gorman Jones, A. R. Evans, CharlesWilliam Elsey, James Lloyd Creech, J. M. Boswell,James H. Taylor and Larry L. Cockrum, currentPresident.residence section are situated on the surroundinghills. It is a place of natural beauty and healthfulsurroundings.Williamsburg is one of the older cities of the state. Ithas long been known for its large number of beautifulresidences, for its churches and schools, and for thehospitality of its people.Cumberlands’ main campus is situated on three hills,which divide it into three distinct parts and afford amagnificent view of the surrounding area. TheCollege’s thirty-four buildings are situated on thesehills, and a viaduct, spanning the south and middlehills, provides an easy and pleasant passageway toeach part of the campus.Mission StatementThe mission of University of the Cumberlands is toprovide a quality, affordable education to studentsfrom all backgrounds through broad-basedacademics. Innovate to improve student learningoutcomes and career preparedness.The CampusWilliamsburg, Kentucky, the location of University ofthe Cumberlands, is in the southern part of themountains of Eastern Kentucky. It is about twohundred miles south of Cincinnati-about an equaldistance from Louisville and about eighty miles northof Knoxville. It is on Highway 25W and Interstate 75.The business section of the city lies in a small valleyof the Cumberland River; the college and chief8University of the Cumberlands 2021.2022

This license is subjectto annual maintenance and authorizes University ofthe Cumberlands to offer specific degree programs.Program AccreditationsThe Hutton School of BusinessThe Hutton School of Business was awarded IACBE(International Assembly for Collegiate BusinessEducation) accreditation in April 2017.School of Social and Behavioral SciencesThe CACREP Council accredits the Clinical MentalHealth Counseling program, Addiction Counselingprogram and the doctoral program in CounselorEducation and Supervision for Accreditation ofCounseling and Related Educational Programs(CACREP). CACREP is a specialized accrediting bodyrecognized by the Council for Higher EducationAccreditation (CHEA) that accredits counselorpreparation master’s degree programs. (ARC-PA) has grantedAccreditation-Continued status to the University ofthe Cumberlands Physician Assistant Programsponsored by the University of the Cumberlands.Accreditation-Continued is an accreditation statusgranted when a currently accredited program is incompliance with the ARC-PA Standards.Accreditation remains in effect until the programcloses or withdraws from the accreditation processor until accreditation is withdrawn for failure tocomply with the Standards. The approximate date forthe next validation review of the program by theARC-PA will be 2029 March. The review date iscontingent upon continued compliance with theAccreditation Standards and ARC-PA policy. Theprogram’s accreditation history can be viewed onthe ARC-PA website.NKY CampusThe ARC-PA has granted Accreditation-Provisionalstatus to the University of the Cumberlands NorthernKentucky Campus Physician Assistant Programsponsored by University of the Cumberlands.Accreditation-Provisional is an accreditation statusgranted when the plans and resource allocation, iffully implemented as planned, of a proposedprogram that has not yet enrolled students appear todemonstrate the program’s ability to meet the ARCPA Standards or when a program holding10University of the Cumberlands 2021.2022

Accreditation- Provisional status appears todemonstrate continued progress in complying withthe Standards as it prepares for the graduation of thefirst class (cohort) of students. AccreditationProvisional does not ensure any subsequentaccreditation status. It is limited to no more than fiveyears from matriculation of the first class. Theprogram’s accreditation history can be viewed onthe ARC-PA website.State Authorization ReciprocityAgreement (SARA)The State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement(SARA) is an agreement among member states,districts and territories that establishes comparablenational standards for offering postsecondarydistance education courses and programs in othermember states. SARA is overseen by the NationalCouncil for State Authorization ReciprocityAgreements (NC-SARA); Kentucky's participation isthrough the Southern Regional Education Board(SREB).University of the Cumberlands has been approved toparticipate in SARA and thus is authorized and meetsthe requirements and minimum educationalstandards established for degree-granting institutionswithin the 49 members states under that SARAagreement. (This excludes only California.)Washington StateUniversity of the Cumberlands is authorized by theWashington Student Achievement Council and meetsthe requirements and minimum educationalstandards established for degree-granting institutionsunder the Degree-Granting Institutions Act. Thisauthorization is subject to periodic review andauthorizes University of the Cumberlands to offerspecific degree programs. The Council may becontacted for a list of currently authorized programs.Authorization by the Council does not carry with it anendorsement by the Council of the institution or itsprograms. Any person desiring information about therequirements of the act or the applicability of thoserequirements to the institution may contact theCouncil at P.O. Box 43430, Olympia, WA 98504-3430or by email at degreeauthorization@wsac.wa.gov.The transferability of credits earned at University ofthe Cumberlands is at the discretion of the receivingcollege, university, or other educational institution.Students considering transferring to any institutionshould not assume that credits earned in anyprogram of study at University of the Cumberlandswill be accepted by the receiving institution. Similarly,the ability of a degree, certificate, diploma, or otheracademic credential earned at University of theCumberlands to satisfy an admission requirement ofanother institution is at the discretion of thereceiving institution. Accreditation does notguarantee credentials or credits earned at Universityof the Cumberlands will be accepted by ortransferred to another institution. To minimize therisk of having to repeat coursework, students shouldcontact the receiving institution in advance forevaluation and determination of transferability ofcredits and/or acceptability of degrees, diplomas, orcertificates earned.The Washington Student Achievement Council(WSAC) has authority to investigate studentcomplaints against specific schools. WSAC may not beable to investigate every student complaint.
