Mukherjee et al.Deep Tissue MassageDeep tissue massage targets the deeper layers of muscleand connective tissue. The massage therapist uses slowerstrokes or friction techniques across the grain of themuscle. Deep tissue massage is used for chronically tightor painful muscles, repetitive strain, postural problems,or recovery from injury. People often feel sore for one totwo days after deep tissue massage. This type of massageis especially helpful for people with chronically tense ortight muscles in the neck, shoulders, or lower back.Hot Stone MassageHeated-smooth stones are placed on certain points on thebody to warm and loosen tight muscles and balanceenergy centres in the body. The hardness of the stoneallows the therapist to address specific area problemswith deeper pressure. The massage therapist may alsohold stones and apply gentle pressure with them. Thewarmth from the hot water is comforting and relaxing.World Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical ResearchShiatsu (also known as Acupressure)Shiatsu is a form of Japanese bodywork that useslocalized finger pressure in a rhythmic sequence.Therapists apply pressure with the thumbs, fingers andpalms to specific areas of the clients body that isdetermines before the session. Each point is held for twoto eight seconds to improve the flow of energy and helpthe body regain balance. People are normally pleasantlysurprised when they try shiatsu for the first time. It isrelaxing yet the pressure is firm, and there is usually nosoreness afterwards. It is common to have a mixture oftapping, squeezing, and rubbing preformed during thistype of massage. This combination is done to try tounblock energy blockages and continue a smooth flow ofpositive energy throughout the body.Thai MassageLike Shiatsu, Thai massage aligns the energies of thebody using gentle pressure on specific points. Thaimassage also includes compressions and stretches. Thismassage is more energizing and rigorous that traditionalmassages. During the massage, the therapist moves andstretches you into a sequence of postures, almost likeyoga. This is done to get the blood flowing into difficultareas. This technique also reduces stress, improvesflexibility and range of motion.Reflexology (also known as Foot Massage)Reflexology involves applying pressure to certain pointson the foot that correspond to organs and systems in thebody. This technique is a mixture of massaging, squeezing, pushing and pulling. Reflexology is perfectfor people who stand on their feet all day. Mukherjee et al.Muscle Energy TechniqueMuscle Energy Technique is a massage that is based onthe principle of a theory that explains that muscles are onone side of a joint will always relax to accommodate thecontraction of muscles on the other side of that jointwhen indirect pressure is applied. This principle is calledreciprocal inhibition. This would be a good massage forathletes for preventative measures to guard against anyfuture injuries. The procedure for this massage is tocontract muscles for a short 5 seconds against an antiforce provided by a therapist. This massage helpsimprove range of motion.Rolfing MassageRolfing is a form of bodywork that is influenced byphysical therapy, yoga and osteopathy. The goal ofRolfing is to improve one’s health by bringing parts ofthe body into the proper alignment. Poor posture, muscletension and pain, mostly in the neck, upper and lowerback are treated when practitioners use their elbowsfingers and knuckles to stretch and open fascia (thefibrous layers covering the muscles) to correct thepatterns of habitual misalignment of the shoulder, head, pelvis and legs. Rolfing helps open up breathing, improve digestion and balance the nervous system.Treatments are suggested to include about 10 weeks of 1hour sessions, with each session focusing on a differentpart of the body.www.wjpmr.comWorld Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical ResearchWatsu MassageWatsu is a very different type of massage therapy thatwas developed in 1980 to apply Zen Shiatsu studentsstretches while floating in a warm pool. During Watsu, themassage therapist cradles your body, while you wearfloats around your ankles to help you with yourbuoyancy. The therapist twirls you in circles one way,and then the other, putting your body through a series ofpassive stretches and twists. You should do your researchand make sure your therapist is certified in this type ofmassage. Usually, the receiver is set up to lie down in asemi-reclining position (you should never use tables thathave a hole cut out for the belly).
